I still remember the Toshiba demo video they had out 6 or 7 years ago. It was to promote the color on their televisions. It featured a hot brunette model in a variety of colored bikinis. I wish someone would post that video here.

"...even higher capacities can be realized, and make it possible to achieve High-Definition TV quality video." A spot-on prediction as this is exactly what would come to fruition in less than a decade after this video was made. Amazing.

We don't need blu ray to be fair in my opinion.

@computerman1323 Yes and no. They knew Blue-violet lasers were destined for use in HD discs, but neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray were created yet.

Ripley's believe it or not: They are not actually watching this on UA-cam twenty-five years later, if they are even still alive. Even then, all you are doing is jerking them off. You are not actually writing anything they would find interesting, you hive-minded insect.

@jjovereats Dual-layer Blu-Ray is 50GB. I've never seen recordable dual-sided dual-layer DVDs; you can get 2-sided single-layer blanks but I've never seen them in stores, I have to mail-order them and keep a supply.

@Enigmatism415 you should check out some of the newer formats in prototype production right now; such as the 5D DVD, or HVD. the Holographic Versatile Disc can store 6 TB of info on one disc (6000 GB), and the 5D DVD can store 10 TB! the HVD is planned to be released in around 10 years or so.

    The baby of the LaserDisc...

I love how DVD's have SO MANY FEATURES that I have virtually never found a disc to actually use. Mulit View? Nope. Commentary yeah, sure, but most any disc you ever find is just pop it in, watch a movie, and maybe get a few "special" features just to pad out the 4 gigs.
Best thing to happen from DVD, in the end, was its use in gaming, be it PC, PS2, Xbox, or other consoles using the format, or a variant thereof.

Still, they never really took advantage of it, did they? Most films you buy have jack diddly on them - they aren't putting ANYTHING special there is my point aside from maybe some other videos, like trailers, or something. Subtitles, second audio tracks, etc, are not going to be anywhere near as data intensive (storage or bandwidth wise) as video, which I never see being implemented as this advertisement suggests, even though that is standard option in the video format. No one ever bothered to use most of them!
Also, as for the 4 gig comment, I am speaking in the context and time frame of this promo, when 4 gig discs were the norm and they were advertising all of these "amazing features" that they rarely implement.
No joke, when DVD was new and we finally got a player in around 2000, I was so excited to finally see all these epic features, like picture in picture behind the scenes and alternate views and all kinds of other cool stuff.. and still to this day, even on blu-ray, have found only a handful of discs that use some features, and still others I have never seen once in actual use in person.
It wasn't used like it was advertised is my entire point. Context is key here.

Only if you have an expensive or 900-series LD player. Most cheap DVD players can beat LD all day long in the picture department.

And it's very stupid. 20-ish years later, and VHS now has it's niche in CD-quality audio mastering.

Eh, not really...they're second banana to Blu-ray now. They are practically given away in combo packs.
