Sony's Demo DVD: A 1999 Introduction to the Format
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- DVD was introduced in 1995, and is still with us today (in 2017) as a fantastic digital video entertainment medium. Although I've posted the introduction portion of this demo DVD before, here is the entire narrated section of the disc that Sony released in 1999, upscaled to 720p. Hope you enjoy it!

The databits channel is pleased to provide you with the best in new tech, vintage and oddity gadgets, media formats, repair projects, electronic experiments and restorations of thrift store finds. There are also many "how to" and instructional titles. The goal is to search through garage sales, antique malls and resale shops for gadgets you didn't know existed, electronic toys you had as a kid, stereo or turntables your parents used or a film projector your school used to teach you valuable lessons. Typically we produce one video a week with several trips to a thrift store per month. Sometimes, through research, an item is searched for on ebay and purchased for review. A list of some of the most popular items watched here on the channel are: record cutting on various materials, DLP television repairs, VCR's, Camcorders, turntables, record players, records, car reviews and dictation equipment.

"..is the format of the future! Built to last!" 10 years later Hey guys check out the blu rays!
adam medbery I guess you can say it at least one of the formats of the future considering DVDs are still being bought today! Either renting them on Redbox or copies still being sold! I remember when the average DVD player was sold for $700! We find bought an RCA when the price was down to $125. The first DVD we bought was The Matrix
adam medbery R.I.P. dvd
Even in Japan, DVDs are still being made.
im in da matrix yo
And people will just move on to watching all of their content in their VR goggles.
Sony wasn't the only company developing dvd. Toshiba and Phillips did too!
Panasonic and Pioneer (who developed the Laserdisc in 1980) are 2 other companies who developed what we know today as the DVD.
Many DVD player made by sony have DCS sound enhancement built in which enhances the spatial quality of surround sound and create virtual surround sound from only stereo speakers
1999: DVD Is The Format Of The Future!
20 Years Later: The Streaming Wars Is The Anxiety Of The Future!
Until your subscription runs out, internet cuts off or you experience buffering issues. You don't have those problems with physical media.
I still use Blu-ray.
A properly done DVD still looks fine even on my 4K TV. A DVD through component on my flat screen CRT is beautiful. Another format that's nice and has great sound too is LaserDisc.
And the sound will blow you away (animation of presenter literally blowing away) !! :D
I remember seeing all the hype about DVD back in the day ... I feel so OLD now.
CoolDudeClem Me too...
I may have been born in 2001, but I still remember when vhs were everywhere! Now I can only really buy them in thrift stores
I swear, back then on a CRT TV, this looked dope.
I love dvd and I still dvd but i also love vhs that will never change but I really love DVD and VHS I love them both and one last thing this video was awesome good job man and keep up the good work
That transition from VHS to DVD was a boon for anime. Suddenly you weren’t spending $40 for a single episode or OVA. Instead it was $20 or $30 for 4 episodes.
Even though we have Blu-Ray, it owes its origins to DVD. And DVD owes its origins to LaserDisc.
Good old times when manufacturers were actually trying to impress you.
I'm listening this on a earphone and I feel the experience.
Whoa! This sounds fantastic. Where can I get some of them...VDVs?
Luke Biddle I think you can get some Vigital Dideo Viscs at Target
I didn't know you could interface the CD and DVD carousels. That's actually pretty neat.
i put my wife in a DVD player. and guess what? it plays!
This is higher quality than my DVD recorder in XP mode. Maybe it's terrible.
You're using the wrong mode. My Magnavox DVD recorder does really well with analog video.
1:49 Just listen to the difference *volume increases*
use dvd every day
Why is this a thing ?
And, DVDs are still quite popular even though most people have HDTVs now. DVD video is generally 540p/i which your 720p+ TV can use with component video or HDMI. That's not too shabby for a 22 year old video format.
Laserdisc was the DVD's parent, using the same laser technology and assembly process.
I dont see the movie or electronics giants trying to kill off DVD for BluRay either. It's still a popular format for budget releases, old TV shows and especially kids movies.
@@wildbilltexas Also today's and classic movies.
In theory Blu Ray should have replaced DVD by 2008 but it didn't, DVD isn't a high definition format but generally looks great upscaled to 1080p. At my local Meijer there's only a small selection of Blu Ray movies including even fewer 4K Blu Ray but about 3 aisles full of DVDs of movies and TV series.
The resolution for dvd in not 540p the official resolution for dvd is 480i but but progressive scan is also supported
DVD still rocks🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
I still pop in DVDs once in a while and am amazed at how much more depth a good 480 DVD image can have compared to streamed 1080p. MBPS > Pixels.
especially having dvds upscaled to 4k looks beautiful on my 55" 4k tv
Physical will always be better than digital.
I watched a VHS for the first time since the 2000's on my 50 inch 1080p Plasma tv and was surprised how good it looked. Nearly as good as DVD.
@@Mike-t5r9q The credit for this beautiful picture goes to your television's processor, because it is the one that must create the missing pixel information that UHD television has in addition to DVD.
I use Blu-ray but DVD still looks pretty good. Especially on fancy players.
I remember hooking a DVD player up to my parents TV in the mid 2000's. And one afternoon I walked in to see it playing one of my dad's CD's.
Of course, what they're not mentioning is the fact that DVD features the ability to not let you skip certain things. As soon as I heard about that (which was around 1999) I knew some company would make it so the DVD played commercials that you could not skip. For me, I didn't see such a thing until 2005 but I think I was actually lucky. (Note: I'm not counting anti-piracy warnings/commercials as commercials, but rather a commercial for an actual product). Also, let's not discuss region encoding. Overall, though, DVD's are great and I have a nice big collection, which is smaller than quite a few collections I've seen. Also, thanks, Databits, for posting this. And for a demo video plugging Sony kit, I thought it was quite good.
Thanks for watching! And I agree, those blasted FBI warnings were required watching on many discs.
@@databits I have a huge DVD collection too!! If you want to see it just let me know!!!
Instructions not clear. I rewound my DVD and now my player makes clown noises.
Hehe what? Thats funny!!!!
This is DVD
This is DVD
VHS screams in the dead of night
This is DVD
Other formats make a scene
Take a seat for the LaserDisc will die of fright
Which disc was this ripped from? I’d love to find it!
How do I rewind my DVD?
You take it out and write rewind on the disc with a sharpie.
reverse
Wasn't the footage/DVD interlaced?
dvd is digital so i dont think so
DVDs were still mostly interlaced.
All of the video is not interlaced but it is 480P for PAL content it's 576P
Wait, DVD it's Digital Versatile Disc nor Digital video Disc :v, isn't?
Digital Vyourmomgay Disc
Correct definition.
Mark R lier!
Flipping heck, it changed so fast I leap-frogged over Blu-ray and went straight from DVD to 4k discs.
As an adult, I decided to record DVDs nowadays.
'Up to 32 different sets of subtitles!'
... you're.. KKKIDDING!! How did they manage to squeeze in all these kilobytes of data?!
Thanks for that video. I just love to watch these. Nowadays the magic of new technology is kinda lost to me for some reason.
I remember when DVD players were the new hotness, and you would maybe only have one or two friends that had one
Nice demonstration video. I love the way Sony made the demo DVD for consumers who bought the DVD player. What they said in the video, the difference in the audio on the DVD is either stereo or Dolby 5.1 surround sound. I have my Sony SQ decoder model SQD-1000 from 1972 which was a quadraphonic decoder where you can get four channels on them. It also requires playing all of your quadraphonic albums in SQ, QS and CD-4. I also tried out the Dolby 5.1 surround sound process and it does fine, but I don't know if my SQ decoder won't decodes Dolby 5.1, THX or DTS audio which isn't compatible.
You deserve more views.
Dvds have held up pretty well!
Really amazing historic video! Amazing how we have 4K technology today and dvd is obsolete. Sony really was behind the creation of CD, DVD, blu ray along with Philips
shaserdeses Not obsolete, just historical. Still in use today. Without this development, there would be no blu Ray.
Sony is pretty cool
People still use DVD today lol.
'Honey, lets wear our matching Target associate casuals today'
I've always wondered what causes a DVD to get scratched after ONE play. Let's say, a brand-new disc w/ a flawless data side. One puts it in the player, watches it through & it comes out w/ scratches &/or dings. I mean, is the laser head striking the surface during playback? That's always been a pet-peeve & why I liked to backup my DVDs.
Could be a faulty player.
Crap cheap player. Spend a bit more on a better player next time. Buy cheap buy twice. It's cheap for a reason.
Hey, my Blu-Ray players don't have those bookmark features (shown at 7:28)! Why not? This was from 1999.
rrrrr . DVD WAY SEPTEMBER 1996 IN JAPANESE & HONG KONG. IN MARCH 1997 IN ALL U.S.A. & PUERTO RICO. THIS 1999 IS DVD COMMERCIAL PRINT
Thank You Sony For Releasing Spiderman On DVD, I was able to Re-watch that rain scene, over and over!
Succeed by a better Disc called Blu Ray Disc.
Robert Kelly Without this one, there wouldn’t be blu ray. Think before commenting!
And streaming will kill both of them so...
Blu-Ray is shit
why does this feels 2009 ish
Used to have to watch this all day at the Sears where I worked. Crazy.
Also it’s been alive so long they still put brand new movies on it. Blu ray was intended to replace. It now just exists for home theatre enthusiasts.
I’ve got to get me some of these crazy DVDs.
I Have demo DVD made by Dell, it's cool looking back at it Now in 2017
Blu-ray is the best video format, but every time I play a DVD, I get impressed at how good it looks. DVD was an amazing innovation.
3:17 that movie is Air Force One 1997
I ever liked this movie blockbuster
I still have good memories with the dvd player when we didn't have a good internet connection just mobile data it brings back memories watching on my plasma tv
"Built to last" how come they get so easily scratched then?
Not to mention the risk that they start decomposing after being exposed to UV light-waves
yeah
the old ones were made better. I have a DVD from the late 90s with a huge scratch on it and it plays like a dream
because you don't take care of them. CDs don't just scratch on their own, and they don't wear out from being played.
Blu-ray scratches are way worse.
OK but I bought 100 laserdiscs and no matter what I try it won't play them. Help please.
This reminds me of the text that would show up after the valve logo on curtain games like portal or half life 0:14
I love DVD!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Same!!!
These were so new and fangled Pete Townshend thought they were called VDDs.
Man I’ve gotta get me one of these!
woman pls gimme back the remote
Columbia/TriStar Home Video DVD
Thank you for sharing this 😃
this is '90s-tastic
classic
DVD, is an early version of UA-cam.
Man, Air Force One sucked.
GET OFF MY PLANE
spoiler alert for Air Force One!
I wonder if current Netflix HD is higher quality than DVD
Yes it is.
The video that introduced dvd is being streamed to my tablet.
Isn't is awesome??
Today: Hey, where's my BluRay disc? I'm trying to rip it to my computer so that way I can put it on my media server.
What DVD release is that from?
A promo release called "This is DVD"
Where is the dvd clips
You haven't experienced Air Force One until it's been dubbed into Russian.
It doesn't help when you accidentally hit the skip to next scene button instead of FF.
Today, there's Blu-ray & Ultra HD Blu-ray.
all is was nice and fine until movie studios discovered p-ops during previews >: (
That’s not a portable DVD player 4:54
Philips actually developed it more
The early thousands are dated. I feel old.
my favorite format
Foi o formato que mais durou no mercado.
Played DVD drinking game. Died in five minutes.
HEHE WHAT!??? THATS HILARIOUS!!!!!
It will never catch on, VHS will be here forever.
😂
I think DVD looks a whole lot better than Blu-ray
How come?
Are you still using an older tv?
I can't wait for our local Montgomery Wards to start carrying tnem.
