In the U.S., people from idyllic places like Iowa and Maine often make death metal. Glad to see this is an international through-line.

***** You will recognize many scandinavian words. I am Norwegian and I'm learning German at school. There are a ton of words that are similar.
And yes, the languages are connected to eachother. Our languages are a part of the Germanic language family ;)

Ade well, i speak german, but the words i ever understand from scandinavian languages are mostly nouns.... and maybe like 1/4 of them... so i wouldn't say many :D

This song introduced me to Skálmöld back in 2017 after the loss of a loved one, and since then their music has been the cornerstone of my closure... If I ever see them live this is probably that one song I'll lose my voice singing to.

Can anyone suggest some songs from this band that has more screams? I saw them live for the first time ever when they were touring with Eluveite. Another band member did the screams, and it was some of the most powerful and best I've ever heard in metal. I'm sorry I haven't found this band before, I'll have to catch up on this.

The song is about Gleipnir the legendary bind that holds the mighty wolf fenrir spawn of loki, the gods attempted to bind him before but he managed to destroy his binds every time, and so the gods commissioned the dwarves of nidavellir to forge a chain so strong that would be able to do the impossible, and therefore the dwarves using magic forged a chain out of 6 impossible to accquire things
the sound of a cat's footsteps
    a woman's beard
    a bear's sinews
    a mountain roots
    a bird's spit
    and a fish's breath
although the bind is thinner than a silk thread it is stronger than any chain in the existance and seceding to bind the mighty wolf he has biten off the hand of the war god tyr who was his caretaker and the only one the wolf trusted in revenge for his freedon being taken away.
Gleipnir is said to hold until Ragnarök, when Fenrir will finally do the impossible and break the impossible chain to devour Odin.
For all the non icelandic speakers i'll try my best to translate.
    Gleipnir
    From Loki Fenrir was born
Full of arrogance it was said
The world was foggy when he was birthed
A heavy burden laid on the world

    Now it was noticed that
    The poor whelp grew fast
Time was scanty, doubt was none
Promptly leashed the beast should be

Firstly Læðing the gods were given
The leash was threaded round Fenrir’s neck
The wolf was forceful, ugly, hairy
With easy wrath the leash he broke.

    When Drómi harnessed Fenrir
A false judgement upon the wolf.
With claws and a thundering crash
That honest leash the wolf tore.

The cat’s footsteps, the woman’s beard,
My magic over this I lay.
The bear’s sinews, the mountain’s roots
Now we wait under the cover of shadow.
The bird’s spit, the fish’s breath,
    Simple creation for a dwarf.
A month I wandered many streets,
My payment was that very leash.

The leash is thinner than all the others,
    Rare and magical dwarfish construct.
To the island of Lyngvi Fenrir was taken,
    Loose he causes much mischief.

Have in my hands the leash Gleipnir
    Look into his evil eyes.
Trusting in Óðinn, Týr and Sleipnir,
They’ll take me there and back again.

The leash is thinner than all leashes,
A Rare and magical dwarfish construct.
Before they Fenrir to Lyngvi took
    Loose he causes much mischief.

I have in my hands the leash Gleipnir.
    Look into his evil eyes.
Trusting in Óðinn, Týr and Sleipnir
Take me there and back again.

Halt!

  • @empressofice

the video depicts the story of Hilmar and his sister Brynhildur who is killed by Váli who is Loki's son, the wolf depicted in the video is not Váli, it's Fenrir seeing that the name of the song is Gleipnir, the bindings the dwarves made to hold the wolf. the lyrics to the song Váli explains what happens to Brynhildur, her soul belongs to Loki and in fact is unable to die and go to her forefathers but remains in a sort of limbo.

In Norse mythology, Gleipnir is the binding that holds the mighty wolf Fenrisulfr. Therefore, even though Gleipnir is as thin as a silken ribbon, it is stronger than any iron chain. Gleipnir is said to hold until Ragnarök, when it will break and Fenrir will devour Odin.
