Nice touch with Bullman-in-a-box Sam and I really liked the way you framed the shot for his brief run by later in the video. The Crabs were always a favourite back in the day when we were spotting them. I must comment though on what you call the "main plate" of the loco. There is nothing "main" about it. In real life it is a rather flimsy add on to the loco which serves as a mud guard and access walkway for minor servicing such as cleaning the front windows. Also you mentioned "turning wheels" on that plate. Directly underneath those below the plate are the sand boxes. Your "turning wheels" are the caps on the sandbox fillers. Good review of a good model, I think your rating was spot on. Keep up the good work my friend. Cheers, David.
Hi David, thanks very much for your comment! Thanks for the corrections too - always glad to learn what I can do better - I'll try to call it something different in the future - although I might've already made the same mistakes again in the videos I've already filmed ready! Thanks for watching mate, Sam :)
Good luggers, preferred by some crews to Black Fives. The lineage from the Crab to the BR Standard classes is quite obvious, with the two inclined cylinders and very high running plate.
A lovely little model, spoilt a bit by the loco/tender gap.I had a ride on a train pulled by one today on the East Lancs Railway. Looked fantastic in its LMS maroon livery.I quite fancy one.
Thanks a lot William - I think I'd agree with you there, the gap is unusually large with this one! Yeah absolutely - I'd love a Maroon one too! :D Cheers, Sam :)
I have just bought Bachmann OO Gauge 32-181 LMS Crab 13000 Crimson Lake DCC Ready. This has a fully painted cab, and is really beautiful. I find it runs just fine on R3 curves on the shorter tow bar setting.
Nice review once again Sam, the draw bar should have 2 holes, so you can choose the gap between loco and tender. The East Lancs Railway have a Crab, currently painted LMS maroon, it is so smooth it usually pulls the railway's dining set up and down the line. I suspect they became rough riders later in their career when maintenance dropped off. I believe Gresley's 3 cylinder locos also needed good maintenance for top performance. Bullman hiding in the box made me laugh... : D Regards, Cliff.
Thanks Cliff - she does have two holes, but the other is really very close indeed, and I expect it's just for display or professional layouts, since it's very tight around the curves! I've also read that they were very smooth pullers too - maybe it's just the footplate where you can feel the scuttling lol! Glad you liked the video anyway - and old bullman! Cheers, Sam :)
The last surviving examples in the mid-sixties were in desperate mechanical condition but sounding like a Cyber-mens retirement home they gamely soldiered on. Lovely locos perhaps with the duck-six my favourite fowler locos .
Ah really? The end of steam was a sad story all round - sounds like these were no exception to that! Glad you liked this one though - I'm really pleased with it! I love the 4f too! :D Cheers, Sam :)
excellent review again sam I also have a horwich crab produced by Bachmann probably made around the same time as yours mine is in LMS Black no 2715 it's an excellent model but I rate a Bachmann model over a Hornby model any day
Thanks very much! That sounds great - I'd have preferred LMS black really, but this one was fine! You are right though - Bachmann beat Hornby hands down, even with this old model! Cheers, Sam :)
Hi Mate, Amzing video like always. You can put it into the second hole to connect the tender and loco, the weathering is awesome on this and gongrats on 200th Video Mate. Honestly that Cow what will it do next. Cheers Mate, Lewis :)
Hi Lewis - thanks so much for the fab comment, and for the congrats - I couldn't have made 200 if people like you didn't watch them week in, week out! Thanks again mate, Sam :)
review, well done on your 200 videos, when I looked at the thumbnail for the video I wasn't paying attention and I thought it was a 7f :) I would like to see you review a 7f though, they are such a beautiful locomotive, and they're my favourite loco. Keep the faith - Callum
Thanks very much mate - I can't believe it's been 200 vids, but its here soon enough! Thanks for all your support with them! haha yeah - it does look a bit like a 7F from the thumb actually, I will see if I can get one some day! Cheers Callum, Sam :)
Also, when you said the patriots motor smokes when it haven't been run in a while, it's because of the dust that collects on the moving parts of the motor so when the motor heats up it burns all the dust off
Hi Sam - that can be the problem a lot of the time - but that's not the case here, since bad running occurs too! I had to fully service her before she'd run properly! Cheers mate, Sam :)
It would be funny if this train would haul some box cars full of crabs and other seafood such as fish, sardines, and squids. Get it? Hughes Crab lol. But I do love the weathering effect on the 2-6-0 Crab locomotive.
Hi mate, yeah I do - feel free to drop me an email to samstrains@outlook.com, and let me know which engines you'd want me to look at! All the best, Sam :)
Thanks very much for the kind words - I'm really glad you like the channel! I'm really grateful for all the subs I have - and 3000 is a lot to me! :D All the best, Sam :)
Hi Ade, thanks very much for the comment! It's not my first weathered loco - I've got lots more, and reviewed a few of them too! Glad you liked her! Cheers, Sam :)
Yeah - they're so realistic nowadays! Thanks for the congrats too - I couldn't make so many if there weren't people like you to watch them! All the best mate, Sam :)
Models like these show me that this is why Bachmann is still in this competition they still know how to produce good models so I may still be exited for Bachmann’s next proje- Bachmann sells steam locomotives for nearly 200 pounds and 100 more pounds for sound Huh never mind false alarm, for god sakes Bachmann
I'd be too scared to handle a crab engine, in case its handrail on the boiler nipped me. You be careful your model doesn't nip you, or you could suffer very sore fingers. I preferred to stare at the Midland Compound and GWR 14xx engines in the sidings on either side. Those two are more my style, although fair credit to the Patriot who runs reasonably well.
I met an old man Who drove the crab Locomotive I'm from the United States The state of Illinois But He told me what it was like And I thought it was cool

Have you seen the one in the NRM? The cylinders are MASSIVE!!
I did do a while ago - they are rather substantial!
brilliant model of the crab, iv recently got to work with a crab and the detail is spot on, performance is good to, great video Sam
Oh wow! That's good news - they got it right then! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Another enjoyable review and 2 cracking locos there. My wish list keeps growing ha ha
Thanks very much Keith - these two are lovely girls! And oops - sorry if I'm driving you to overspending lol!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
That steam locomotive is at the National Railway Museum in York. In dark red though.
Ooh is it really?? It's been a while since I was there - I'd love to see her !:D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Great vid! Those were two fantastic LMS haulers! Very enjoyable. :)
Thanks very much mate, glad you liked them, always fun to run those!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Good luggers, preferred by some crews to Black Fives. The lineage from the Crab to the BR Standard classes is quite obvious, with the two inclined cylinders and very high running plate.
Excellent locomotive Sam, very nice detailing on her...Simon
Thanks Simon - I had been looking for one of these for ages, so very pleased to find a nice one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
They’re beautiful engines! So far only one has operated in preservation! I hope the other two will be restored someday!
Thanks Ryno - yes I saw the preserved one a few weeks ago - let's hope she's joined by the others one day! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Your welcome Sam! It’s nice to have every preserved engine to operate at least once in preservation!
Ryno :)

I think the 'scuttling' will be very large amounts of rocking caused by the massive outside angled cylinders. :)
Yeah that sounds like it might be right!
It would be funny if this train would haul some box cars full of crabs and other seafood such as fish, sardines, and squids. Get it? Hughes Crab lol. But I do love the weathering effect on the 2-6-0 Crab locomotive.
haha that's a very good idea actually - I will have to set up a fish train for it, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
16:49 finally, back in his natural habitat.
haha yep - causing chaos!
Hey Sam do you do repairs or services? I have 2 defective tender engines and I would love it if they could get to run for the first time!
Hi mate, yeah I do - feel free to drop me an email to samstrains@outlook.com, and let me know which engines you'd want me to look at!
All the best,

42942 went 21/1/1967
It looks like a smaller version of big bertha
Does it?! I don't know who big bertha is - is she from Thomas maybe?? :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
Big Bertha was a Midland Railways built loco. She built almost specifically for banking up the Lickey Incline.
Sam'sTrains Big Berta is a Midland Railway 0-10-0, she was built in 1911, and she was a famous licky incline banking locomotive, and she was schrappen in 1954 and she was replaced bij a 9f 2-10-0
Weathered
Yes! :D
[Italian] Bonjourno Sam Sono Jacob
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The patriots were nicknamed 'baby scots' as the shared a boiler design with the royal Scots BTY.
Yeah definitely! You can see how similar they are side by side! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I was lied to! I was told the "Micky mouse/ ivatt" was called the "crab"
Aah okay! The some ivatt designs do look like the crabs actually - but they are separate!
Cheers,
Sam :)
