  • Volatile anesthetics: inhalational medications used to induce / maintain general anesthesia
Bronchodilation: reduction in intracellular Ca and sensitivity → relax airway smooth muscles
Decreased mucus clearance → Impaired removal of secretions from the respiratory tract
Inhibition of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction: inhibit the normal protective response to hypoxia, potentially affecting pulmonary blood flow regulation
    Rapid shallow breathing:
    Increase respiratory rate (RR)
Reduce tidal volume (TV): amount of air moved during each breath →
Decrease minute ventilation (MV): total volume of air exchanged per minute
Depression of central ventilation response: decreased response to hypercapnia and hypoxia
Proinflammatory actions: exacerbate acute lung injury due to their proinflammatory effects

You forgot “causes dementia in elderly patients, with clear mental impairment becoming noticeable within 6-12 months post-exposure, and severe debility within 3-5 years.”
