I go to the Senior Center to a balance class & this one of the exercises our instructor teaches us, but our chairs have no arms on them. The balance class has really helped my legs!

I did this with my mum the other day by coincidence. I used the verandah rail as a support to assist with the start. I also did standing side leg raises. Even in a few days, her balance improved dramatically. This is a really good video.

At 82 years, I can do full squats ....I started getting up from the bed..took a couple of weeks doing them 3 to 4 times a wk..progressed to the couch..finally I do squats with my arms extended out front...20 four times a day...love the feeling of being able to do many things. My legs were slightly sore. My 94 yr. old friends are up to 8 every other day!

Good for you Monica. I'm a full-time yoga teacher and most of my classes are with the wise population. The results I see are nothing short of amazing. My inspiration was my 87-year-old father who last year was unable to walk or get out of a chair without assistance. Now, 2 classes with me a week, and daily exercises on his own, he is out golfing 18 holes every chance he gets, easily getting up and down even from the floor, and nearly pain-free.

This is really the exercise to rule them all. I do this with postpartum mothers, active seniors, and seniors that already have some mobility issues. The response I've gotten has been great, because they really notice the change in their everyday life. Even the fit people can feel this in their legs the day after. For those who need even more of a challenge I tell them to keep one foot completely on the floor, but with the other foot they only have their heel on the floor. Some of my seniors can even do this with only one leg.

I've had two serious falls recently and think I have discovered the main contributing
factor. It was never even hinted at in months of home physical therapy. As I stood
up from my most recent fall in a storeI, looked at the soles of my shoes, The rear outer portion of each heel was worn down. As I was escorted home by a store employee I began tipping neededto react more quickly, but had been only seconds away from you're falling more frequently to the side, check the heels, they may be a part of the problem.

Lift chairs not only result in increased weakness, they also ruin body mechanics for standing because as they push you forward, they force you to push backward to keep from sliding onto the floor. Pushing backward is exactly the opposite force needed to stand. You need to push your body forward, to shift it from your buttocks to your feet to stand. That doesn't happen if you push backward. That's why people who are used to a lift chair will often push against you as you try to help them stand. Also relying on a lift chair to stand puts you at a disadvantage when use any other chair, such as ones at the doctor's office.
