When she was interviewed in French, the interviewers are well wishing and quite admiring. When she was interviewed in America, the interviewers were always quite agressive, focusing on he problems, on her private life

When you think about it, Callas shares great wisdom with her public in this interview: It doesn't matter whether you're a diva or a cleaning lady, it's HOW you fulfill your role that matters. I think that is a very important message, one that could perhaps also help destroy a lot of barrieres in society: It doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, black or white, poor or rich: It is how you comport yourself that is important.

Netrebko doesn't even speak proper English. No German, no Italian, no French. She sings in those languages though, even at La Scala, and she is a citizen of Austria. That's the 21st century.

ok, if one would be prepared to refrain from being judgemental and think a bit instead, I’d suggest to consider that Anna Netrebko was still born and grew up in the USSR and consequently had most likely neither English nor French in school. Her career outside Russia was immediately a huge success and international from the beginning, This means that unlike most of her colleagues like Jessye Norman and practically all opera stars she did not sing for years in one of the German Opera Houses as a member of the ensemble thus being exposed to German on an everyday basis and in this way learning it more or less automatically. As far as I know she sang for the word go all over the world, rehearsing, performing, studying new repertoire in various languages. She did have to focus on English because you can’t do without it when you work internationally as a singer. Meanwhile her English is good enough. And now some super smart people reprimand her for not having incidentally learned French, German, Italian as well.

For anyone who ever doubted that french is THE language of culture. Callas and Visconti, both geniuses and masters of art and culture - neither one of them native French-speakers - naturally speaking perfect French to each other because French is the language of art.
