    So this is a brand new stove by Vermont castings. They call it the Dauntless. I am not a big fan of the name, however this stove sort of fills the gap that the old resolute acclaim was. Which was a big fan favorite as far as size. I would say this stove is going to be very popular based on its size alone. The encore used to be and still currently is the best seller. However I feel the dauntless will take this over. Because most people will need a size like this. Which will heat about 2,000 sq ft. Stay tuned for a new video as well, which will compare all 5 sizes of the current Vermont castings line up. The full line up now is the Aspen C3, the intrepid Flex burn, The Dauntless, The Encore, and the big daddy Defiant.

    I bought the medium size Vermont Castings Consolidated Dutch West stove back in 1983. They offered a small, medium and large stove at that time. Still use it today. The round catalytic converter is located under a thick steel cooking plate in the top of the stove. Front or side loading doors and slide out ash bin. 2 years ago I noticed the smaller stove chained to a pole out in front of a swap shop near me. I bought it for $100. It had a light film of rust, but I was able to clean it back to new condition very easily. The Brass handles, gaskets, glass, catalytic converter and ash ben were like new. Maybe 2 or 3 fires were made in this stove. Will be installing the stove in my workshop. Too bad that they don't make this design any longer, but oh well, I have 2 and they will Definitely outlast me! IMO they are the best stoves that Vermont has made! God Bless!🙋‍♂️

    We've had the Resolute Acclaim since 1991 and will be replacing it when we renovate. It still works, but weather, vog (volcanic emissions) and salt air here in Hawaii have taken its toll, and we did not light up the stove monthly as we were advised to do. It still works, but the finish is chipping and rusting and the inside is heaving. This looks like a good option less the cat converter. Sure like the Resolute Acclaim...Thanks for the video. Hope you don't have a hernia after moving the Intrepid!

    A little history. The Dauntless was a British Ship built in the 1800s, HMS Dauntless. The Resolute was a British ship that got stuck up in Antarctica. It was rescued by an American whaling ship in 1850 and repaired and returned to the English Crown. Years later when the Resolute was dismantled. England built and beautiful desk out of the main beam. That desk now resides in the U.S. White House. It is known as the Resolute Desk that most Presidents set behind. So the names they were using for the stoves were famous British war ships. So that is where Old Vermont got some of the stove names.

      There was also a USS Dauntless and a USS Intrepid , the HMS Defiant was a reproduction of that era used as the basis for a movie in the 60's , The resolute was indeed a british warship outfitted for arctic exploration . In fact all the stoves were named after historic ships and if you google them you will find the names were also used for vessels in Star Trek . You would think a guy selling the stoves and making videos about them would take maybe 30 seconds to learn about his product eh !

      Did you get this figured out? I have done 2 burns to get rid of processing oils and cure paint - smelled like oil every time the temp got high. I know this will stop when those oils are totally burned off, but I also found lowering the temp control produced lots of smoke inside, blackened the glass and the back of the box - which according to the directions should stay white with proper burn temp. I am hoping this was just the oils burning off. Since I did these initial burns on chilly but not really cold days, I did keep the temp control reduced so it would not get too hot in the house - and maybe I ran it at too low a temp. I don't have a stove thermometer but plan to get one. I love the stove - just want to run it right:)

    As previously mentioned, the old Dauntless was discontinued around 1987. It was one of the most beautiful designs, but was not a serious heater. It was a modern interpretation of a Ben Franklin stove with over-sized ash lip, and frameless glass unsealed doors. The doors could be slid back into the stove and a screen installed, further reducing the efficiency. Obviously it was not EPA approved, nor meant to compete with airtights.... but man was it beautiful. I would like one just for decoration... in brown enamel!!!

    How do you switch the FlexBurn between using/not-using the catalyst? (Do you just like physically remove the catalyst if you don’t want to use it?)

    Dauntless is the opposite of daunting. So it might mean if you are facing a particular task that might seem beyond what you can do you can look at it is very daunting. In this case the stove is dauntless meaning easy task to deal with. At least that’s what I’m thinking this name pertains to. I’m a little nervous about the Ash pan being so small. You didn’t really explain how often that Ash pan needs to be changed and how would you know except for opening it up every day and wants to keep embers from falling out the bottom while you’re cleaning out the ashes that part makes me a little nervous. How many square feet of a home does this heat.

    Hello, I got this stove about one month ago. It was doing really well, it is very efficient. Unfortunately it started puffing smoke. At one point the puffing was so strong that it opened the top door and ashes flew all over. This is very scary and very concerning to me. Do you have any experience with this issue, any suggestions? Vermont Castings has no costumer service, whatsoever! The store, where I bought it, is just dismissing my concerns.

      @luzlopez3689 3 роки тому

      @@embersliving Thank you so much for the suggestion! I think I will try that. At the moment it is difficult to use the stove because with the damper open it gets too hot and I am not able to control the temperature. Apparently the damper has to be closed in order for the temperature control to work. But as soon as I close the damper it starts to puff.

    • @luzlopez3689
      @luzlopez3689 3 роки тому +12

      @@embersliving Thank you very much for your recommendations. I had the draft evaluated and it is good. The problem with my stove was that the ash tray was a little loose so the fire chamber was constantly getting air from the ash tray. Apparently that was causing the puffing in the stove. Since that was adjusted the stove is working very well. The front doors also needed to be aligned. I would recommend that people having issues of puffing make sure that the doors are properly aligned and the ash tray is closing tightly.
