What I appreciate the most about this show is how it explains how these celebrities got into these positions, instead of just talking about their work. Something surprisingly not commonplace with a lot of interviews. I really want to get into the industry and it's reassuring hearing how flawed so many of them are and how they were able to find their big break.
24:24 this is fucking magical, so much feels with that description of what TV means to him really spoke to me. Funny and poetic. Dan Harmon is so fucking great.
I'm glad that Dan Harmon knows how to cross a red line through all the exposition he writes in his scripts, but he definitely forgets to do it in person
wow, acceptable tv was a major part of my childhood. my middle school time. my younger brother and i really loved it, we would vote online and everything. i still show people operation kitten calendar clips. acceptable tv was sketch comedy gold and gave me laughter & joy in a time i needed it most. thanks dan harmon i appreciate you.
Sam Fraser I have a sneaking suspicion that Dan Harmon is best as a co-creator. Harmon got really close to Community and I think it wasn't always a good thing. Without Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty just wouldn't be as good.
+Benjamin Rujopakarn I think it's that Dan is best when he's at his most grounded. At Community, he was the crazy one, which made for some great TV but also some uncomfortable situations. At Rick & Morty, Justin Roiland's the crazy one, so Dan gets to focus on his strengths: story structure, character development, etc.
I am such a crazy fangirl for Community; I was so excited to see that Dan Harmon is on Speakeasy (another thing I'm a crazy fangirl of). In this interview, Harmon was just like his show, dark and fucking hilarious. Great interview! I loved his insight into network executives. And of course, as usual, PFT is the perfect host/interviewer. And that mustache, god bless it, is back in action.
Dennis Crosby What exactly is your end-game for trolling Dan Harmon like this Mr Crosby? I mean, it's not like he'll read it and go "well now I practically HAVE to kill myself and destroy all past editions of community with this doomsday device." I mean...probably not. Still, you might want to check into some form of therapy...or try and find a nice girl and then check into couples therapy. Would that not be a more productive use of your time than living out aggression-fantasies on youtube comments? Although, that might be better than making more 'rant' videos...I would advise against that in the future.
Don't say that. He's exactly right for television, exhibits Community and Rick&Morty. Television is where he thrives, there's no reason to fix what isn't broken. Just think of Serenity and Avengers. Everyone thought Joss Whedon could do no wrong ever and if Firefly was how he did TV his movies would be mind blowing. Instead they look like overproduced TV episodes that lack the continuity of a "season" preceding or following them. I for one want Whedon to go back to TV for good, and I want other talented TV makers including Dan Harmon to stay right there with him.
I'm always confused when people are able to put all of my feelings towards tv into words. Dan Harmon did it in: They didn't watch ______ to make themselves feel better. (Blank, cuz it's different for everyone).
Can someone explain to me why fans of community feel so ambivalent about Dan Harmon? I absolutely love the show, and Dan's description here of what television means to him is pretty beautiful (around 23:30 onwards).
Ironic that Dan Harmon mentioned Comedy Central not wanting holiday episodes, because they picked up syndication rights to Community and I remember specifically watching the Christmas special (TOW they prepared for regionals haha) on CC.
I got food poisoning eating a mcdonalds burger out of a bin when I worked there. True story. I placed it there wrapped carefully so I could eat it secretly and thought my precautions would have kept it safe to eat. Boy did it make me sick
I know guys from college who were into D&D and they would "design dungeons" like Dan talked about. One of my friends dropped out because he got so obsessed with it.
I was looking for more Rick and Morty discussion. I'm happy it at the very least got a brief -almost forgot about- mention at the end, but yeah, that show is amazing and there should have been a segment on it.
love all his interviews. But often i wish he would talk about certain things more. Like we all know him mostly for community but it was a pretty small part of the interview, and i wish he got to talk a little more about its cancellation and return and the actors, specifically donald.
Some day I will write on a show with Dan Harmon. Some day, dammit! For now, I'll just sit atop this hill staring into the sunset, looking like I'm trying to find my career somewhere in there, while vague country music plays in the background, cutting in and out between farm animals looking up at the camera and old townspeople sitting on old wooden porches drinking warm tea out of jars. Good thing I'm 19 years old and can still lie to my parents about going to college!
My favorite part is the ending, where Rick and Morty is casually mentioned. Now, it would be the main focus of the interview. I don’t think anyone could have guessed how well it would be received. “How’s Justin doing?” Just fine, in his scrooge mcduck bathtub.
Lovely interview! Btw, that thing about being jealous of bank-robbers for getting to wear pantyhose on their heads is actually (at least partly) true! Since this interview, Dan has completely come out as a pantyhose fetishist. :)
Lmao, what? I'm a Meatwad super fan, and I love Dan to death but he is the master at rubbing people the wrong way- pretty much the opposite of Meatwad, who somehow manages to befriend and tame even the bad guys.
10:00 - ........A show called "Heat Vision and Jack", starring Owen Wilson and Jack Black as a talking motorcycle? *_WHY DID YOU KEEP THIS FROM US, GOD?! DOES YOUR CRUELTY KNOW NO BOUNDS?!?!_*
What I appreciate the most about this show is how it explains how these celebrities got into these positions, instead of just talking about their work. Something surprisingly not commonplace with a lot of interviews.
I really want to get into the industry and it's reassuring hearing how flawed so many of them are and how they were able to find their big break.
24:25
That was beautiful. You've touched my TV junkie heart, Dan Harmon.
The documentary HARMONTOWN which is on NetFlix now will definitely give you The Feels then!
Ooh, I'll check it out
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way :)
24:24 this is fucking magical, so much feels with that description of what TV means to him really spoke to me.
Funny and poetic.
Dan Harmon is so fucking great.
Harmon gives the most honest interview i've ever seen. Loved this one.
I'm glad that Dan Harmon knows how to cross a red line through all the exposition he writes in his scripts, but he definitely forgets to do it in person
This was such a great conversation. Thanks PFT and Dan!
I fucking relate to him so hard.
wow, acceptable tv was a major part of my childhood. my middle school time. my younger brother and i really loved it, we would vote online and everything. i still show people operation kitten calendar clips. acceptable tv was sketch comedy gold and gave me laughter & joy in a time i needed it most. thanks dan harmon i appreciate you.
This man is a FUCKING GENIUS
Dan Harmon is so consistently funny it's ridiculous..
Whether you like Dan Harmon or not, you have to admit that he tells a pretty good story.
His story circle makes so much sense
How can one man be responsible for the two greatest TV shows ever?
Sam Fraser step 1. Be a Genius. Step 2. Do not make compromises. Step 3. Profit.
Sounds about right
Sam Fraser I have a sneaking suspicion that Dan Harmon is best as a co-creator. Harmon got really close to Community and I think it wasn't always a good thing. Without Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty just wouldn't be as good.

+Sam Fraser A lot of people worked on those shows...
More Dan Harmon! I love how it's so visibly difficult for him to look anyone in the eye.
+Hey Seuss Ya, but it looks like he's going to punch him
I am such a crazy fangirl for Community; I was so excited to see that Dan Harmon is on Speakeasy (another thing I'm a crazy fangirl of). When pierce left it was a dagger in my heart. He was the best.
I missed Troy way more than Pierce
Jim Novak They both added to the show in different ways. Troy was clearly more popular but the difference was obvious when Pierce left.
this is crazy, the two podcasts I listen to most are Spontaneanation and Harmon Town. Interesting chemistry between these guys, I like it.
That's funny how RIck and Morty just got tacked on at the end. I don't think they understood how big a deal that show was about to be.
Pure gold.
If there is a better Dan Harmon interview, or a more insightful analysis of TV... please send me a link.
The man is a genius!
Dan Harmon's freestyle rapping on Getting Doug With High is hilarious.
God this man has such a passion and talent for television and entertainment. No wonder I love his shows so much.
Super interesting, I wish this was twice as long.
He makes a strong point about dumpster food. I've been living in below poverty wages comfortably on trash-picked mac and cheese.
Oh man and bread. You have your choice of bread in the dumpster, my dudes.
wowow those film parties sound so amazing, what he says about people in la sitting on locations&different talents&ideas just waiting is so true
Dan seems like a really smart person, but also really hard to work with
This dude is too talented for television. So glad someone, anyone, picked up Community.
and then dropped it, multiple times
Dennis Crosby
bad.
Dennis Crosby What exactly is your end-game for trolling Dan Harmon like this Mr Crosby? I mean, it's not like he'll read it and go "well now I practically HAVE to kill myself and destroy all past editions of community with this doomsday device." I mean...probably not.

fuckin A he is! Too right dude.
Don't say that. He's exactly right for television, exhibits Community and Rick&Morty. Television is where he thrives, there's no reason to fix what isn't broken. Just think of Serenity and Avengers. Loved this interview.
Praise Harmon... Community forever!
I think this is the best Speakeasy I've seen so far. Also, PFT is getting more handsome as he's aging.
I'm always confused when people are able to put all of my feelings towards tv into words. Dan Harmon did it in: They didn't watch ______ to make themselves feel better. (Blank, cuz it's different for everyone).
Rick and morty might be the best new show out right now.
Can someone explain to me why fans of community feel so ambivalent about Dan Harmon?
I absolutely love the show, and Dan's description here of what television means to him is pretty beautiful (around 23:30 onwards).
when he finished that monologue i was like "Holy Shit."
+Louis Dwyer I'm a huge Community fan and this is the most I've ever learned about him. That monologue was very good and very Abed.
Louis Dwyer his verbosity can be a little grating, but what he actually says is brilliant and relatable
Louis Dwyer "I fleshed that out way too much "
"...my twisted balloon animal brain..."
This guy is a genius.
6:33 YES, a mention of benign monsters. Strong call back to Episode 1 of the Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project
Holy Shit! I would've missed that had you not said something.
This is so great.
I want you on harmonquest, Paul. This is a demand!
I enjoyed this 😁
Same
I really see where Abed came from, hearing all the film references Dan makes. It's like his way of understanding the world
2:46 that face. Lol.
oh the laugh I just had....I'm just done for the night now.
Interesting interview
god i love dan harmon,i just love the shit out of him
Fuckin A! We all do.
Man Dan Harmon is a pretty funny guy. To be honest I don't know why I thought he wasn't gonna be.
KingJemnas look up Dungeons and Dragons by dead alewives, it was made at least 15 years ago
Pretty good timeline.
Ironic that Dan Harmon mentioned Comedy Central not wanting holiday episodes, because they picked up syndication rights to Community and I remember specifically watching the Christmas special (TOW they prepared for regionals haha) on CC.
"Are you from Chicago?" "No, Philadelphia."
"Okay, um- *[sounds of disgust]* - Okay."
I got food poisoning eating a mcdonalds burger out of a bin when I worked there. True story. I placed it there wrapped carefully so I could eat it secretly and thought my precautions would have kept it safe to eat. Boy did it make me sick
His new show Rick & Morty is amazing.
Agreed, that show is hilarious. Wubba lubba dub dubs!
3 years later it's known as the best show on TV 👍🏼
@Spire Wolves Oh ye? How did GoT work out for you? ;)
Love it!
Love John's office-style look straight into camera at 2:45
+Duncan Fraser so much jimming
I know guys from college who were into D&D and they would "design dungeons" like Dan talked about. One of my friends dropped out because he got so obsessed with it.
he channels David Foster Wallace for a few seconds here around 24:30
Dan is awesome. So is Paul.
looking good Dan!
oh shit, Dan Harmon did Acceptable TV? Knowing that now, it makes a lot of sense.
Such a fantastic thumbs up ratio on this one. Nailed it.
aww Dan looks pretty cute here..
16:10 Dan making serious eye contact.
Finding out Dan went to Marquette made my damn day
omg, Rock-lords. Best obscure toy reference ever.
You can tell Paul F Tompkins was really having fun with that Philly/Chicago bit.
PFT just can't escape people saying titular to him.
And "dichotomy".
Community
Rick & Morty
Two shows I constantly can see random episodes again and again.
Never have enough of them.
I was looking for more Rick and Morty discussion. I'm happy it at the very least got a brief -almost forgot about- mention at the end, but yeah, that show is amazing and there should have been a segment on it.
Why does this make me very anxious
"A pair of titular characters" good lord 😂
What a couple of champs.
I almost went to The Safe House. this past weekend. So weird that he referenced it.
Celebs always say “I’m just a regular person” until they get treated like regular people. Then they whip out “don’t you know who I am?!”
not chicago huh?
I just can't stop imagining Mr Peanutbutter.
Outro as the show fades out: "How's Justin doing, is he okay?"
The future: Well, about that...
I had a Gobot Rock Lord when I was a kid!
Does anyone know the name of the sweater thing Dan is wearing?
Hey Seuss And let's be serious about this.
love all his interviews. But often i wish he would talk about certain things more. Like we all know him mostly for community but it was a pretty small part of the interview, and i wish he got to talk a little more about its cancellation and return and the actors, specifically donald.

what happened
the people need to know!!
Lol I too have a mom with a living room on Mount Olympus! What a small world 🤯
As someone who loved to play the McDonalds Monopoly game... he ain't lyin about those locks...
My favorite part is the ending, where Rick and Morty is casually mentioned. Now, it would be the main focus of the interview. I don’t think anyone could have guessed how well it would be received.
“How’s Justin doing?” Just fine, in his scrooge mcduck bathtub.
So true
Yeah? How is Justin doing? lol
Just a fascinating dude.
16:14 needs to be a GIF!
25:22 LMAOOOO
Made some of the best tv shows of the century Rick and Morty and Community
Nice new intro card. I've been out for a while ^^;;;
Lovely interview!
Btw, that thing about being jealous of bank-robbers for getting to wear pantyhose on their heads is actually (at least partly) true! Since this interview, Dan has completely come out as a pantyhose fetishist. :)
Dan Harmon reminds me of a human version of Meatwad.
he's a human version of shit
Dennis Crosby You're just a bummer.
Dennis Crosby I doubt anyone would agree with you more than him.
Lmao, what? I'm a Meatwad super fan, and I love Dan to death but he is the master at rubbing people the wrong way- pretty much the opposite of Meatwad, who somehow manages to befriend and tame even the bad guys.
Event Horizon Productions I meant in looks, not personality. ;)
Yes yes
What a god
Thanks
Wait, I know this guy... Teflontoe?!
"Big Plaster" lol
10:00 - ........A show called "Heat Vision and Jack", starring Owen Wilson and Jack Black as a talking motorcycle?
*_WHY DID YOU KEEP THIS FROM US, GOD?! DOES YOUR CRUELTY KNOW NO BOUNDS?!?!_*
I was so excited to hear about Rick & Morty, and all we get is a brief shout out at the end? For shame, Tompkins.
Rick and Morty is amazing!
well, that was nice glimpse into darkness.
FYI He meant prone, not supine
The Safehouse, GoBot Rocklords, Door Punching!?? I am wearing a Gencon '95 T-shirt in this forum avatar. We're practically related!
He was just able to say "A pair of titular characters" organically. I don't think thats ever happened before.
rob's jaws 4 movie is a classic
Anyone remember The Dead Alewives dungeons and dragon skits?
Paul f Tompkins should voice a character on Rick and Morty!!!😂
Birdperson and Mr.Peanutbutter. woah
Atrijit Das what me peanut butter? Wow, didn't expect that
@@godsofgaming2341 paul is
What is this, a crossover episode?
My wife has Asperger's." So does he, I guarantee you. He exhibits all the symptoms. I say that as someone who's also on the spectrum.
I love the camera work of this show...
