"the one on the far right..."
"they are all on the far right!" is a well known QI line
When Stephen put the moustache on and said "Baaaahh" he was referencing one of his most well known characters, General Melchett from Blackadder - another classic show you should react to at some point frankly! That's why the audience loved it so much...
Neil has mentioned a few times that he's watched Blackadder.
@@Ffinity Good to hear. And of course the producer of Blackadder, John Lloyd, is the creator of QI, bringing us full circle...
@@cemerson Now if only they can get Rowan, Tony and a few other Blackadder cast members on to the QI panel, the circle will be complete. Some have stepped up, but there are some glaring omissions!
@@Ffinity A few have been on The Museum Of Curiosity - QI's sister radio show, which is also hosted by John Lloyd
Fry 's character wears one of those 'moustache bras' in an episode of Blackadder.
Bill and David are QI All-Stars, IMO. Alan and Bill are absolute best friends, so they're just going to have fun playing together. And David is so good at deconstructing the logic behind an idea and putting it on display with frustrated mockery.
I think people probably suggested this episode specifically because of David's objections to the klaxon. It's a fan favorite that shows up a lot in compilations.
I also love how David's cynicism plays off the optimistic frames of mind of other people, particularly Stephen - I mean, just look at this exchange about the interconnected complications of World War I:
"It was eventually sorted out, and we pretty much spanked their botties. We pretty much did!"
"After only four years of carnage."
It's been said before in previous comment sections, but you would surely enjoy the sitcom Black Books given you are a Bill Bailey fan. Similar in style to IT Crowd and Bill is brilliant in it
Seconded once again
David Mitchell has hosted a brilliant Radio 4 quiz for a number of years called The Unbelievable Truth which utilises unusual facts in its format. The QI Elves like to play with David as there is a rivalry between the two shows. The Unbelievable Truth also takes the piss out of panelists that are associated with QI when they guest on that show.
You would live The Unbelievable Truth, especially ones where Henning Wehn is a guest.
The British Hawker Siddeley Trident was the first aircraft to have an automatic blind landing system capable of guiding the aircraft automatically during airfield approach, flare, touchdown and even roll-out from the landing runway. Performing the first automatic landing by a civil airliner in scheduled passenger service on 10th June 1965.
When Fry put the Melchett tach from Blackadder on my first thought was Phill Jupitus would have been kicking himself he wasn't booked.
In the first ever episode, Stephen explained that "because the questions are so hard, we don't give out points for being right, we give them out for being interesting, regardless of whether what they're saying is even relevant to the question"
“That’s numberwang!”
I think you'd like the episode 'Blue' from season 2. An early one so there's no XL version but if you can find it, it's a classic.
It's Jo Brand, Bill Bailey and Sean Lock. Lots of silly jokes, Bill being his usual self and Sean being absurd.
I've been to a few food theaters or sensory restaurants as they are sometimes called. Usually it's a 3-4 hour experience where all your senses, well the most common ones at least, are stimulated. It's not just about the food. It's about the whole experience. Lighting, room temperature, sound, and smell are the most common extranuous ingredients to a dish but also balance and movement sometimes used by being rocked gently to simulate the movement of a ship as an example. It's quite an experience but obviously also extremely expensive.
Surely that moustache has it's own Twitter Handle-bar? ;)
Autopilot isn't on all of the time but most as Bill said. Take offs and landing and done manually, and also during any times where maybe they need to avoid storms etc.
this lineup is golden,
Me, as Neil is doing the introduction: "I don't "remember" this episode"
Also me, 4-seconds into the episode: "Oh yeah!!! The "Bahhhhhh" episode" *titters*
A quick FYI Neil. The new series of Only Connect starts out on its marathon run next week. More bad puns from VCM
Bill and David play well together, almost as well as Phil. I wish a new episode with Bill, Phil and David would still happen.
There hasn't been a single episode in the Sandi Toksvig era, where all 3 guests are male.
Any episodes with Bill, David, Jimmy Carr, Dara O'Brien or the late and great Sean Lock, you know is going to be a good one.
Jack Dee came out with single greatest comment in the history of QI in an episode with Ronni Anconna and Sandy Toksvig, who were on the same team. I wont spoil it for you but it does have it's own UA-cam video.. 😂
He almost managed to keep a straight face after that one, too :D It was a hilarious moment and a savage burn
It is a truly legendary quip!
You appear surprised about Roosevelt and Owens - check out The Battle of Bamber bridge.
QI S8E7 "A guide to Girls And Boys" is good value.
It's on the list!
If you like David Mitchell rants then there is a whole series of them on his UA-cam. I think it's his UA-cam, but if not you can search for them.
I've seen that short flight, Tom Scott has a video of it on UA-cam.
To fully land on autopilot you need a CAT(egory) III ILS (instrument landing system), and both the aircraft and the airport need to have the equipment to facilitate such a landing. And contrary to popular belief it's used to land in poor weather conditions, most of the time the autopilot is turned off a few miles out. The problem with a CATIII landing is that it's prone to interference from the ground so aircraft can't hold close to the runways as they normally and it messes up the flow of traffic.
A simple test can be done with microsoft flight simulator, where you have mods that provide study level airliners, and even people who are used to flying simplified airliners in the sim won't get the advanced aircraft on the ground in a safe way, and that is without stress of getting killed. That said, there are clips on youtube where student pilots get talked to the ground because their instructor became incapacitated (one guy landed the aircraft on his very first lesson).
Put it this way; if you're ever in the extremely unlikely scenario where you are chosen to land a commercial aircraft because both pilots are incapacitated and you can actually physically get into the cockpit, you want to be in an Airbus. For a lot of the Airbus family of aircraft, as long as you dont have to change the route in the Flight Management Computer, it's simply a case of pressing a few buttons and changing the altitude by twisting a knob and you can certainly do the approach phase at least with relative ease, although some of the smaller planes have auto-land capability as well. The plane flies itself. Boeing on the other hand is a more complex beast, those aircraft won't just tell you what to do.
If you haven't read David's book about his life, then you need to listen to the audio version.
He reads it himself. It is very entertaining.
Never, *ever* criticise a QI scorer.
That's minus 25 right there.
Or was it minus 30?
As far as I know, every klaxon (which isn't a klaxon) counts for -10 points. David got three klaxons, Bill got one after being ahead on +3, finished up on +4 so he made 11 points back.
Most dangerous flight.. is that landing/take off at Lukla?
That's the one!
@@NeilTalks It's on my list! I really want to hopefully create the opportunity to do the Three Passes from Lukla at some point.
Also, thanks for all the content! Been thoroughly enjoying it, keep it up!
what david mitchell content is less forgiving copyright wise? just to know.
WILTY gave me constant issues when I was still reacting to it.
I think certain modern planes can be landed by computer at airports that have the system installed nowardays.
Has anyone else heard the rumor that sandi is leaving to pursue other avenues and that Matt Lucas is taking her place? I think I read that somewhere but I don't know how reliable the source is
Matt Lucas would be a terrible choice. VCM might work
@@cassandraharris853 I agree. I like Matt as a panelist but I can't see him as a host.
it's not that easy even with Auto pilot. Tom Scott and Mentour Pilot did a video on that recently. But it's easier to be talked down. Or it's the only way it might possibly maybe with some luck be survivable.
What's the most dangerous flight in the world that you did?
Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary airport in Lukla, Nepal. The landing strip in Lukla is built into the side of a mountain, at a 12% gradient and is only 500 meters long. It ends in a massive rock face when you're landing uphill, and ends in a cliff dropoff when you're taking off downhill. Lukla's the most common start point for trekking in the Everest region.
Why not react to the actual pilot episode?
Tom Scott, and other YT and TV show have done the shortest flght
The edict that there can't be an all male panel was ridiculous

Don't forget, it's not about being correct, it's about being interesting. You can be correct but boring and get no points, or wrong but interesting and get points. It's true that no one knows except whoever is handing out the scores, and no one actually cares, because the scores are completely irrelevant.
