  • The South African soprano, Elizabeth Connell, had a long association with Opera Australia. Born in 1946, she made her debut at Wexford Opera Festival in 1972 and sang at the opening of the Sydney Opera House in Prokofiev’s WAR & PEACE in 1973. From then on, she had a special relationship with Opera Australia - singing diverse roles such as Rosina, Ariadne, Kostelnička, Venus, Lady Macbeth, Fidelio, Médée, Norma, Abigaille, Ortrud, Amneris and Ameila in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA. She is heard here in the final scene of Cherubini's MÉDÉE from a performance at the Sydney Opera House - September 18th 1987 - conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario.

She is wonderful. There aren't many sopranos who can do justice to this role, either the French or Italian versions, IMO. Also, a shout out to the cast, chorus, orchestra and conductor!
