    Hi Cathy. I used to listen to your album a lot back in the day when you played with Duck Donald. So great to see and hear you again. I bought my banjo when Earl Scruggs died. Figured there should be the same number of banjo players in the world, eh. And I have only played the Scruggs style, which was easy for a guitar player to pick up, until recently when I got intrigued with the clawhammer sound. Far mor difficult than I expected, but I'm gettin' it.
    Thanks you for such clear lessons to get me started right.

    Lovely lesson. My question is what finger do you hit those individual strings with.

    Cathy, Here's a quick question about form. I've heard the the thumb should always come down on the fifth string, even at the "bum" stroke where you're hitting just one string. I see you do that sometimes, and not others. Advice? Thanks

    fiel zu schnell da gestellt. Für Anfänger wird es schwer zu folgen da nicht langsam gezeigt wird welche Seiten wie angeschlagen werden. Schade, im ersten Teil besser.

    im really struggling with the bum ditty, can anyone confirm exactly what strings i should play with my right hand, i would be very grateful, thanks

  • @tannerstan
    @tannerstan 11 років тому +1

    honestly I don't think it matters what strings you are hitting. As long as you are getting the bum ditty rhythm right. When I learned I would try and learn while learning a song. I started with cripple creek. :)

    Is she hammering down on the strings with the nail of her index or her middle finger?

    • @ThatSB
      @ThatSB 8 років тому

      different people do different things. she is using her index i believe. some people use middle. other people use middle for the bottom string index for the rest. whatever you feel most comfortable with. i think most people would say standard is index only others would say standard is middle on bottom index on the rest. only middle is less popular.

    • @dolam
      @dolam 2 роки тому

      Middle finger seems to be standard, but index finger is fine also. That is what I use because it just feels more natural.

    Your method confused me until I watched your hand.....to me that's double thumbing.

  • @ThatSB
    @ThatSB 8 років тому +1

    I just want to point out in your last video you state that the fingers shouldn't extend down like a guitar strumming motion but you actually do it all the time lol

    • @chadhawkins2520
      @chadhawkins2520 7 років тому +1

      I know this comment is old ....but just for new readers . Notice the fingers extend as they open and move away from the thumb . The thumb actually never moves below the g string . It's a a brush as the hand opens not an extended strum . I didn't get the nuance of it until a saw a good explanation by Patrick Costello . Cheers (-:

    Please do that slower, please play it the way it would sound if you were just learning yourself, so we know what to expect it to sound like as we are just learning..

  • @debbieintelisano2442
    @debbieintelisano2442 8 років тому +1

    This is for BEGINNERS - you're going a bit too fast...............

    • @ThatSB
      @ThatSB 8 років тому +3

      by playing fast you get to hear what it is supposed to sound like. she tells you what she is doing even the entire time she is playing fast so you should atleast be able to tell. besides when she plays cripple creek but that is just showing what full speed is with the techniques. she says one two and three to tell you what string to hit with the first note of each part. this is the standard clawhammer rhythm. first index or middle finger hits one string. then hits a few strings. then the thumb plucks. over and over. so one would be first string all string thumb. two is second string all strings thumb. etc. you can get this down to her speed in a day just keep practicing and thinking about what youre doing. the rhythm will start to come naturally. and believe me when I say it is harder to learn from a video where they just show full sleed and super slow speed. the general counting part she does is a good practice speed that gives you a short term goal to reach. i can explain further if you like

    • @ThatSB
      @ThatSB 8 років тому

      also, the different speeds in the video dont need to be followed exactly like she does. you should practice the moderate speed for a while before trying the faster speed. not just follow the video. she is demonstrating what to practice, not telling you the rate to progress
