OMG how smart are you. Love the idea of putting the jars in a bowl while filling them. I will be doing that from now on in hopes that it greatly reduces the mess I always have.

I did not add any food coloring to mine. I just added more red hots. I figured it would count as sugar and the more I used the more red I would get. I'm with you on the food coloring though! Mine turned a really vibrant red color. I ended up with several pints of syrup and figured I would use it to sweeten hot tea during the winter.

I had watched this video before then after watching your lastest video on you being tagged I saw the apple peeler again and got all excited. I just found the apple peeler at a thrift sotre for $2.47 and got 25% off. Woo Woo Was I a happy girl. Anyway I tried the peeler. Mine has a suction instead of the clamp. It worked great but it has another cutter on the end that makes the apple come out spirl. It looks like I can take off the spirl cutter. Thanks

I made some of these when I did my apple butter. They came out great and they taste just like the ones my mom used to buy in the store.

I haven't had spiced apple rings in years! I really need to see about making some. I know my dad and my brother would love it if I did and took them down to them in April. :)

I actually did not use a recipe. I made up my own with a very heavy syrup. I used over 1 cup of cinnamon red hots and simply considered them as part of the sugar. I did use the cloves and I also added a few allspice berries and vinegar. I made some with the skin on and some with the skin of and I sliced mine by hand. They are at least double the thickness of yours. They are really nice. I tried cooking some slightly before jarring them up and they are really just mush. But tasty.

Great one, Lily! You never seem to run out of ideas----or cool gadgets.
I'm going today to get one of those little tart makers for making apple tarts.
Thanks for doing all the ground work for your fan club!

I've seen that recipe in the Ball book. It looks good and I've thought about trying it but just never got around to it. Now I'm motivated to get those apples canned. YUM! Thanks.

I've never had these before. They look mighty good! Does your peeler have more than one slicer thickness? I've seen some with 2 or 3 different rods/handles but have no clue where to get them other than buying a whole 'nuther peeler. Surely the thicker sliced ones would hold their firmness better? Or like you already said, blanching them. Seems like blanching is the way to go with nearly all foods...LOL!! ;-)

Wow. those look so yummy! my mom used to make those when i was a kid. FYI if you live close to a Krogers. i just bought a bunch of ball fruit fresh there. They were reduced to 50 cents. originally almost $5. Krogers has a lot of their canning stuff reduced to 25 to 50 cents. i am stocked up on pectin for a long long time! love your videos!

Looks delicious! My mom used to buy spiced apple rings and I do remember them being pretty expensive. I'm thinking of getting a peeler like yours, such a time saver! Thanks for another great vid and all the tips, you're great :)

I made a full batch and ended up with 12 pints. I used a hand crank Apple peeler/corer/slicer on half of the apples. I would NOT use the corer/slicer again, only the peeler. And hand cut thicker slices to core. The “machine” cuts the slices waaay too thin. And I, also, would add more food coloring. Other than the mechanics, this is a delicious spiced apple recipe!

and you do a great job. people need to know this and be reminded of where they came from. that way they will know how to survive and know that food comes from other places besides a store.

We've did this with cucumbers last year. I was told to go to the dollar store and get some Red Hots. So I bought all they had, LOL We probably still have a bag or 2 somewhere. :)

Today will be warm, but hereafter, no one knows.....the bad thing is that we seem to be in a 5 year drought...so even it gets cold, there may be no snow....we need more moisture in the air and we have only been getting it off the ocean....which is 300 miles away......and the storms hug the coast... what we really need is a long rainy period in summer or a lot of snow in March so the water can slowly seep into the ground....I won't drink city water so I drive to natural spring about 1x per wk.

Hi Susan, so are these used for a dessert or what? The only time I have seen red apple rings was as a garnish on a plate at a restaurant, and I didn't eat it. So what am I missing?
    Thanks Bev

Is it okay to add pickle crisp to a jar after it has been processed? I canned some hot banana peppers last week and they are too mushy, if I can save them with pickle crisp it would be ideal. Also, would it be okay to add pickle crisp to your recipe for bread and butter pickles? Thanks for the info!

And, the delivery charges.....but almost $5 is just nuts....thanks for your great recipe and please keep up the good work.....I love the spiced apple rings around this time of year....I live here in Apple growing country, so getting the apples will be no problem. You don't have to put up with that!!.....I love your videos....they are just great...and the sound is very good, too!!

    • @akashaofthenile6077

is that a product, pickling lime, or is it just like squeezing lime into the bowl sorta thing? I don't like using any non organic or chemicals in my canning, and have never seen this type of apple canning, and definately want to try it. Maybe add the occasional beet, to add the red color :)

I made the mistake of cooking these and they turned to mush. Then tried cooking the mush in light syrup and they turned into a ungodly sweet liquidy mess. Threw all of it down the drain. We have tons of apple trees on our property over 30 years old and still producing like crazy. A wasted day...wish I would of seen this video BEFORE trying to can rings.

    • @melissam0ss
      @melissam0ss 2 роки тому

You can blanch the rings (cook much less) or use raw and also add 1/8 teaspoon of calcium chloride (pickle crisp) to the jar before water bath
