    Usually the roof decking is a function over form assembly of OSB supported by rafters hidden in the attic and the ceiling is a boring sheet of drywall hung on the ceiling joist to cover everything up. In this build, however, we are going crazy and having all of the structure exposed! That means that the rafter beams must be architectural grade doug fir and the ceiling is also the roof decking and is clear doug fir 2x6 T&G.
    There are several challenges to pulling this off and in this video Jordan just scratches the surface on how they are putting it all together to make one of the coolest roof assemblies they have ever built.

    I love it. Beautiful, functional. I hate fake beams, but love real ones. The contrasting steel adds to it, in my opinion. I love the design of this structure.

    I'd love to see how you cantilevered the roof beyond the beams. Great work.

    This is awesome. I made exactly the same roof, identical structure, but using urethane foam insulation.
    I am just a DIY hack, and I figured this out myself, but finding your video gives me additional validation.
    I appreciate that

    Very similar to my 1970's mountain home. Big beams like that, but 1 1/8" T&G plywood followed by 3 inches of polyiso, 7/16 OSB, and then a metal roof.

    • @JordanSmithBuilds

      Curious on the comfort level with only 3" of polyiso? I bet it looks great.

      @@JordanSmithBuilds pretty dang cold. Added r19 between the beams, but the real issue is the massive wall of windows and the 8,100' of elevation it sits on.

    Where is this located? I was just thinking about this detail. Could you do this in the south without facing moisture issues? It seems that your moisture barrier being outside the dougfir would lead to condensation at the dougfir layer.

    same way i built my sauna structure. though i did 3/4" T&G western red cedar then 1" cedar on top of that. mainly because my shaper and feeder don't like going through 1 1/2" material full depth cuts like that but 3/4 she can all day.

    Hey Jordan. I’m wondering what measures did you put in place to deal with expansion and contractions of the ceiling?

  • @GenZyannd

    jordan what is the purpose of the first layer of ice and water? since u r going to deck it again on top of rock wool and appling ice and water in that deck, that would be your wrb.

  • @GeraldLeenerts

    Very nice looking deck!
    This is similar to how we did our roof (minus the nice roof decking): 3/4” sheathing, intello x, 2x layers of 3 1/8” gutex, adhero 3000, battens to hold it all down with metal roof on top of that. This is a .5/12 slope too, so we expect our roof to get wet but we allow it to dry out.
    Even in Phoenix 2 layers of rockwool wouldn’t hit our minimum r-value, so what code do you all need to hit?

    • @JordanSmithBuilds
      @JordanSmithBuilds  Рік тому +1

      Code? What code? :) We are sneaking a bit of XPS in there too to get the R values up while keeping a low profile.

    • @GeraldLeenerts
      @GeraldLeenerts Рік тому

      @@JordanSmithBuilds Ahh. That makes sense. XPS is great for making up r-value, but kinda sad about the carbon impact vs EPS. Regardless, keep up the good work!

    • @LACraftsmen
      @LACraftsmen Рік тому

      I bet the columns/ purse don't continue down the whole beam or there are some other overriding design decision as whole that makes it appropriate. An impressive structure like this. That kind of stuff doesn't get overlooked I would think. But hey what do I know.

    Hello @Jordan Smith, I am currently in the North East, just subscribed and love that job your working on... I am currently designing a house for my family its a Passive Solar Double (Skillion or Clerestory) Shed Roof house, single story with exposed beams with 2 x 6 T&G... with a half of it being 4"inch concrete slab on the left and a small full basement on the right, using I.C.F.'s for the first time to form for the foundation, and exterior 2x6 walls ... Curious what is the span of those rafter beams??? I cant wait to build our home!!!

    • @JordanSmithBuilds
