  • I retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2019. After moving around the world for over 30 years, I have enjoyed settling down these past three years and FINALLY getting a (mostly) proper shop up and running! Although there is still some work to do, I am grateful to be able to work comfortably and efficiently in this space.

4:48 I also have my license plates hung in my garage. When I left NC in 1992, they told me that when I registered in the next State, I had to mail my NC plates back. If I didn't, they would have an arrest warrant made. My NC plate is hanging in my garage. lol.

Suggestion for that wall - move your Craftsman tool chest to the left (near the corner) and build something new to incorporate all your smaller collections into one organized space making allowance for the plumbing as necessary behind a toe kick. Great looking, well thought out shop, looks like you have fun there!! As you should. Keep up your good work.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I will definitely explore this idea once I get some down, “shop” time 👍👊

Your videos are just content without narration, just the work, which is great! So this is a welcomed departure, thanks for putting a voice to the work and letting us in! Your work is inspiring, love the furniture builds (who doesn't love walnut!!).

I like the plane till and using screws instead of glue is brilliant so you have the flexibility to move things around

Great shop Ben. It is always interesting to see an others craftsman's' workshop. Funny thing is, it was like walking around my shop with just a few exceptions. As far as the disaster wall, I too have the Craftsman toolbox,...( cant live without it) all my nuts, bolts, washers, and odd stuff I made a 4 cabinets with 5 drawers each for all my small woodworking items. I have a miter saw but it sits under my 19-38 sander ( one of the best investments my shop). I only use it for construction projects. Mini split was a game changer for me. I spent way too many summers sweating my but off, and breathing torpedo heater fumes many a day (Cleveland, Oh). Now, 68 year around.
I had to move many items up on the wall b/c floor space is just to valuable (21' x 22') The biggest obstacle in my shop now is my workbench (21st Century Work Bench made by Bob Lang from Fine Woodworking Mag). It's takes up a ton of floor space...

Glad to hear I’m not alone! I think the trap I’m in is not letting go of the things I’ve had for so long. I’m sure your bench is a thing of beauty, but yeah- space is important too. My new bench is actually smaller than my old one. 😮

Great shop tour! I agree with your thoughts on the out feed table, no need to waste the space when you have a nice workbench. For the wall that you are not happy with I think just adding a second rolling toolbox would probably be simple and clean. You might even be able to hide a hose real in the bottom drawer of it.

Hello Ben, nice shop set up and video. I am also a woodworker and retired Army who just moved away from Williamsburg, VA and moved to the Inland Northwest, Liberty Lake, WA. I am building my new shop in our 3 1/2 car garage. My shop in VA was also in a small 2 car garage. I will be following you on your site. Dave

I'd install the air hose reel on the ceiling with the end above head clearance, don't think it would hurt having an air supply for future air tools.
    Didn't see a sharpening station.
    Cheers,

Thanks for watching… and for the tips! You’re right. I should’ve mentioned my sharpening process, which is pretty much the Paul Sellers method. Three diamond stones mounted on one board which I pull out and secure in the twin screw vise.

Very good video. I am retired and been getting into word working for about 1.5 years. I went with the WEN for my Air quality my shop is 12x16 i have it built out pretty good. You make a great point of keeping it just shop stuff. I’m going to look into the Jet 1000C I believe it was you showed in the video. New sub here for sure, looking forward to your furniture videos, that’s what i eventually want to do is more furniture stuff. Thanks again for opening up your shop for us!

From what I have seen you are doing great, I hope you don’t get wrapped up in all the tool companies wanting you to turn your channel into a sales channel for them although I do watch what tools people are using. I do buy Lie-Nielsen stuff. So far I think you a very good channel, best of luck I’ll be watching !!!

Fantastic Garage shop! I am upgrading as of this writing from a 16 x 20 shop to a full blown 32 x 40 one man operation. awesome job on using that small footprint. Everything in a small shop is a compromise, but it looks like you are good to go. One question... assembly table? glue ups? where do you handle that work?

    • @cleancutwoodworks
      @cleancutwoodworks  6 місяців тому

Thanks 👍 Yeah, assembly table is just not an option in this space. I do some glue-ups on the outfeed table (phenolic plywood) and some on the bench (rubio monocoat). Not ideal, but the glue pops right off both surfaces with a dull card scraper.

Love the shirt lol! I had honestly looked hard at getting that jointer planer combo and ended up getting a 15inch planer and 8 inch jointer. Nice looking setup and tool selection. I was curious what brand are the spoke shaves you have, all I have is an old stanley and really like the look of those.

Thanks for watching! Yep - totally agree. If I were in the carpentry/cabinetry/construction business I probably wouldn’t have spent the money on the nice stuff.
