I miss that great funky jazz fusion sound and that wonderful smile of George Duke. He was truly one of the greatest jazz musicians at the keyboards. George was a great guy and is certainly missed. Rest in peace.
E Who, i said who needs 5 musicians when you have 3 of the greatest artists, that knows what great fusion should sound like. As a fusion drummer, my hat's off to ya!
Here is another reason why Christian McBride is one of my favorit bassists of all time! If you ever picked up playing double bass yourself you will soon realize how fucking difficult it is to play like that! Yet he makes it look so damn easy! He's simply a beast on electric and acoustic! Funk, swing… latin… he is simply amazing! Moreover he is a fantastic arranger and his big band is very tight too!
American singer-songwriter, keyboardist and record producer George Duke has released thirty-two studio albums, eight live albums, nineteen collaborative albums (as a member of the George Duke Quartet, the George Duke Trio, the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, the Nat Adderley Sextet, The Mothers of Invention, the Billy Cobham/George Duke Band, the Clarke Duke Project, and the George Duke Band), and forty-seven singles.
This was refreshing to see and hear. Thank the Lord we only had George Duke for a little while . Great Performance as always. RIP George Dukes. Joseph G. Saulsbury
Duke was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for After Hours in 1999. He was inducted into The SoulMusic Hall of Fame at SoulMusic.com Al Jarreau recorded the tribute album My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke (Concord, 2014) with songs written by Duke. Appearing the album were Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves (Duke's niece), and Patrice Rushen. The album received the 2015 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album
Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Steve Miller, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborne, Stanley Clarke, Bob James, Lee Ritanour and (the best of the best) George Dukeeee! 🏵
rons playing a simplified version of what he usually played on the drums when they would do this song. i have a video of the three of them doing this song and george was looking at ron like he was crazy. i think he was losing george in the time and the tempo was ridiculously fast. christian was straight but he plays drums as well as bass so he had no problem. you can read george's lips telling ron, "come on man!". its actually funny.
Jpgoeagles i pulled it from UA-cam but i think they've since taken it down from where i got it. I'll check and see if its still on my drive and if so I'll post it tomorrow.
This is waaaaay up there with the likes of Grover Washington's "Earth Tones"; Jaco's "Used to be a Cha-cha"; any of Herbie's or Freddie's Badddddest Recordings. It is Grrrrreat!!!!
This is from the excellent cd "After Hours" that was released in 1998 on Warner Brothers and it seems strange that none of his Warner Brothers material has been re-issued on LP/Vinyl after he died. I mean that is the least one would expect of a Master of the keys, George was in my book bigger than life. The only ones that took notice of his death was Sony in Japan who Re-issued all his EPIC Label stuff on Blu Spec Cardboard sleeve cd's. And finally MPS did a box of his MPS LP's in Audiophile pressings using the original Master Tapes. But why not Warner Brothers???
