      +ejmac11 Humans are insignificant too, this planet is insignificant. We are nothing but a speck of dust in the universe. We will become extinct one day too, sooner than later if we don't stop all this consumerism, overpopulation, and pollution. But does it really matter in the long run? no. Nature will regenerate itself and go on, with new species as it has before, until the sun "dies" in 5 billion years.

      you think thats sad? scientist believe there is 1 whale who produces its noise at such a high frequency or low, i cant remember, that no other whale can even pick it up. so there's a whale out there that cant even communicate with anyone else of his/her own species.

    • @IronBlockGames
      @IronBlockGames 7 років тому +5

      You speak of the 52-hertz whale. It sings at a higher frequency than any other whale, at 52-hertz. However it's a misguided idea that other whales can't hear him. It is assumed that because he sings at a higher range that to other whales would be deaf to it, but that isn't so. They'll be able to hear it just fine, it just wont he at a call they normally use.

    I've seen George in person, years ago when I was still a teen; I visited those islands, like stepping back in time... I remember being told even then that they'd tried to mate him with other closely related species of giant tortoise, but he just wouldn't. I can't believe after all these years he's still alive; but I still wonder if even a reptile can feel the loneliness of being the last of it's kind. It didn't seem to bother him while he ate his breakfast that morning!

      I’m from Ecuador and it’s not that simple to live there is actually imposible you can just live there just if your granparents or parents are from there and also for travel and visit they have lots of rules for the animals such as don’t touch and also before enter to Galapagos in the airport the problem is the US army that absolute needed to put a base in an island in the Cold War and that island was the island of the gigantic turtles so yeah that sucks

      I know, that's why I said what's next.
      But it will inevitably happen when Antarctica's climate warms up enough to be tolerable.

    • @TalenkauenTV
      @TalenkauenTV 9 років тому +14

      AG 1: That's not gonna happen any time soon. Antarctica has been frozen over for 15 million years, and not once in that time became warm enough for terrestrial habitation. I'm pretty sure no amount of man-made greenhouse gases would be able heat the world fast enough to allow humans to colonize it.
      2: Even if it did, the world still be fine. The poles have only had ice caps on them for 35 million years, and yet, terrestrial life has existed for hundreds of millions of years. Even if the ice caps melt, there will still be enough land for large animals to exist. After all, some of the largest terrestrial life-forms ever known evolved during a WARMING PERIOD.
      3: "Human plague". HA!! That's adorable. It's ironic how people like preach about how humanity is nothing more than an infestation, and yet you people seem to forget that you're PART of that very infestation. If that's how you really feel about your own species, then why don't you and your buddies just eliminate yourselves from the equation? Oh, that's right, because people like you also subscribe to the notion that "Everyone's a filthy parasite EXCEPT FOR ME, 'cause I'm perfect!!!".

      You're putting words in my mouth. Whether it ever happens or not, if Antarctica was warm enough, humans would colonize it. Yes, I'm part of humanity, but I'm not actively supporting the destruction of wildlife habitats - or denying that overpopulation and climate change will be a major problem in the near future. Nor am I some ignorant, arrogant, low-life who thinks humans are entitled to do whatever they want.

      Kill the westerners. They represent 18% percent of the World's population (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Austria), but they consume more than 55% of the oil extracted and refined each year.
      Imagine a world without westerners. We could have peace in the world and we would stop global warming.
      So I agree, let's kill all Westerners.

As opposed to say Asians who drive the market for rhino horns, elephant tusks and shark fins causing mass extinctions. Or the South Americans who are deforesting the Amazon for farmland and lunber. Or how's about Africans that encroaching upon and destroying wildlife habitats for farmland or diamonds? Yeah let's do that so the rest of the plant can be made into desolate lifeless planet you clueless genocide advocating twat/ troll.

Too bad many people on the planet are either religious, too poor for anticonception, or egoïstic, you name it.. and this causes the increase which pretty much destroys the planet and all of it's wildlife. A sad thing..

      The420kingchronic I will have to reply to you here. "Paying"? you know, money doesnt produce oil, nor natural resources. I mean, you could pay for all the resources of the world, but thats just gonna "kill" the world, and thats pretty much whats happening because they think that money is the answer to everything. I am not saying it is their fault, being a poor or rich country means nothing even tho it is confirmated that 1st world countries consume a lot more, thats pretty logical, but i dont think money will save us when the whole world become a shithole, a literal one.

      Caseyf9andpinkpony They're planning to bring back a Thylacine with a preserved fetus, bring back a passenger pigeon with a specimen and a wooly mammoth with a frozen baby they found. They've already cloned and brought back a gastric brooding frog. Lonesome George only died in 2012 so there's still hope.

      DNA survives up to 200,000 years just in nature. We have a catalog of every animal DNA that's existed in the last two centuries.
      Including the Thylacine and the Dodo Bird.
      One day, you'll be taking your children, or your grandchildren to a Zoo and seeing the Mammoths will be as common as seeing the parrots or the chimpanzees.

    Can't he breed with other large tortoises and perhaps make friends with them? It won't be the same as having pure-bred pinter island giant tortoises, but I think it's worth a try. Half-breeds aren't so bad; and at least he would have left offspring behind after he dies.

      Clones have what they call "Half-Life" the clone will live half as long as the original in life span, and clones can't pro-create. It would be pointless to clone..

    • @johndoes6095
      @johndoes6095 10 років тому +3

      Inclemency17 clones are as old as the genetic material that was used to clone them. Clones can reproduce just as well as any other organism...remember dolly had 3 offspring.
      Sad to say that traditional cloning wont help his species b/c George died in 2012.......however the Lazarus Project might revive his species.....it worked wonders for the gastric brooding frog that was extinct since the mid 80's.

    • @MilkandDyskit
      @MilkandDyskit 10 років тому +1

      Inclemency17 Untrue.
      The cloning process is basically getting the DNA from one organism and putting it into an egg cell of a female of the same organism, this egg cell will be then artificially inseminated into a female and it will grow as if it was another offspring, the result is another organism that shares the same DNA, it would function normally and live the same as if it were just another animal.
      The problem here is that there are no females of the tortoise left so it would not be possible.

    ..why can't he be cloned?

    • @rileycbowers
      @rileycbowers 9 років тому +2

      Because that clone will receive very old DNA. The baby turtle will not be born with a regular infants young DNA. It will be born with the exact same DNA as this turtle, meaning the cells are old and deteriorated. So basically, it'd be like a human baby being born with the same medical issues as an 88 year old.

    • @zachburskey8868
      @zachburskey8868 9 років тому +28

      Riley Bowers
      HAHAHAHA nooooo.
      The age of cells is not recorded in the DNA, if you take DNA of an 80 year old and cloned him, the clone would not have cells of an 80 year old. That is like saying you can't clone an one armed man because the clone would have only 1 arm.
      The reason you can't clone this animal is because even with cloning his species would not be genetically viable.
      Depending on the species you have to have a large enough population to allow genetic diversity.
      I believe in 50 years we will be able to bring back extinct species through DNA samples and randomly sequencing genes with algorithms to allow genetic variation that's stable with very few sample sizes of original DNA.
      Maybe one day in the future we will have the answer, seeing how old tortoises live we may even have the answer in Lonesome George's lifetime.
      (Typed this before I found out George died a hundred years early. RIP pieces George ;_;)

      Um, no. If he's an exact clone, then he will receive old DNA. We discussed this in my biology class. According to my teacher, they tested this and the cloned animal had the same medical issues as the old one, just as a baby. So, hahaha to you.

    nowdays what identifies a _specie_ can be very small morphological changes in bone structure or some other miniscule detail that emerged from isolated breeding grounds like this island here. But relatively speaking, it's like a human having instead of 26 bones in a foot having 25, you know, very small changes. So he's the last of the kind in one regard, but in anything tangible, he's just a giant tortoise.

    • @ewiem4351
      @ewiem4351 7 років тому

      A subspecies often just lives in a different location. In reality they're all members of one species. The term has been used to corrupt the Endangered Species Act. If a local subspecies is found it can be used to shut down an area to development or agiculture, when in reality the same species is found elsewhere and is not endangered.
