Dean Malenko Completely Botches A PPV Match
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- In this video I break down the time when Dean Malenko forgot the rules of the Catch As Catch Can match with Billy Kidman at Souled Out 2000 which led to the match ending prematurely 2 minutes in. This was Dean Malenko’s final match in WCW. He would leave WCW and go to the WWF shortly after this PPV.

Haha, Dean has done that roll and "breather" a million times -- basically an unbreakable habit. He actually has TOO much experience LMAO
yeah bet it was like muscle memory at that point
When muscle memory bites you in the ass
Dean didn't wanna do the job
Props to the Ref for thinking straight and quick at the moment.
WTF are you talking about? Its not like he did anything special or fixed the mistake. He simply followed the rules.
@@mikeawesome9212 some refs get confused on what to do when the ending doesn’t go as planned.
@@masterchief272 he would be specifically told the end to the match.
@Turd Ferguson yes it absolutely is true. They have an ear piece and are often seen to tell wrestlers to 'take it home' meaning the people in gorilla need the match to end sooner rather than later due to time constraints. They also know the angles to big blow offs because if they mess it up it ruins an entire storyline. For general week to week matches they usually aren't told the outcome but they always have someone in their ear telling them what to do.

Right!
This wasn’t even prime Malenko either watch any of his work from 95-98
@@aidenhorton18 how was prime malenko burh burh.?!
You should treat yourself to any of his matches against Jericho or Eddie absolutely amazing
Yeah kidman deserves all the praise he gets.
Props the the ref. He barely aged all these years.
I know right?! It takes going back to his early matches to truly see how he's changed.
I remember when he was “Ric Flair Jr” for helping flair with quick-counting/slow-counting pin falls in Flair’s matches. Then he started coming out with Flair dressed up like him🤣🤣🤣
I saw him at the grocery store a few months ago, here in NC. I was too excited! 😂

Billy Kidman so underrated he was the life of cruiser weight division. Surprised he’s not in hall of fame
He’s just a kid, man.
I loved Gregory Helms' 2006-2007 run as Cruiserweight champ. Underrated.
💯💯💯 wwe didnt know how to use him imo.. kidman and rey really were the life of the cruiserweight division in wcw
@@Therealjtyler Exactly. Kidman should have been a big star his entire career. He was so talented, and went far in WCW as long as it lasted, one of the biggest faces in the company by the end. His problem was that WCW folded so early in his career, and WWF/E who took him and others on didn't like or trust WCW guys, and didn't understand how to book their characters either. If WCW hadn't gone under or tanked, BK could have been a massive star into his 30s and beyond.
@@pendafen7405 i agree 100 percent. Well said, couldn’t have said it better myself
I had no idea he was capable of botching anything
He's used to doing that roll followed by a "breather" where he rolls out the ring
WCW written all over this
I mean it was a WCW ppv so….
fr
From one point of view I have to disagree with you….. Unless they actually wrote this to happen this way this is entirely a brain fart by Dean….. not unlike when occasionally during a submission match you will have a wrestler accidentally go for a pin.
Where WCW can get the blame is being so disorganized at the time to not be able to recover and FIND a way to restart the match and have it go the desired time and end with the desired finish. Seriously all it would take is to have Kidman get on the mic and insist that Dean come back in and finish the match
So your all going to forget how "everyone's favorite" Roman Reigns was handcuffed and botched the match and should have lost to Kevin Owens but instead WWE chose to insult the viewer's intelligence and still let Roman Reigns win. GTFO
As opposed to WWF 😒

One of the few times Dean Malenko botched an ending. He was usually a VERY good worker.
Being a good worker has nothing to do with being in a 1 of 10000 style match with non-sensical, idiotic stipulations.
99.99999999999% of all matches ever would have continued, so throwing Dean under the bus for WCW's shit booking is weird 🤷

What are you talking about?!? The finger poke of doom was a 5 star match, one of the greatest in history, an instant classic!
@@mattsmith3835 😂😂😂😂
Suffering succotash was obviously the greatest promo in wrestling history,
The finger poke of doom is why there will always be stables and cliques in pro wrestling. The cult leader sends out his hitmen to retrieve the title belt but Hogan doesn't want to just own, he wants to defend it. This was the only way to do just that.
I liked kidman when I was younger, my created characters in WWE games were always based on his attire
I don’t think it his is how the script was written. He looked genuinely confused and embarrassed! I remember thinking, “Malenko is going to get shite when he gets to the back” 🤣
Also Kidman was visibly disappointed even though he "won", because he lost the chance to display his own skills and by this time in his career Kidman was one of those guys who was still fairly young, but had quite a bit of experience and this match probably would have shown that Kidman could compete with malenko on a technical level, even if he fell short, I think fans would have been impressed if he kept up for 10-15 min
@@mess1ah8x92 in all actuality, this is one of those what ifs. Kidman was always on the cusp of something bigger and maybe this was the match that would have elevated him through to the upper midcard. Reminded me of when I came inside a random hookup without a condom and the lady informing me I have a kid a year later (actually was mine, DNA test confirmed) so now I'm paying for it with $130/month child support payments lol!
I think Malenko got off easier than me though, just one match vs. 18 years of obligations.
The jacked-up thing is that I met my wife shortly after the hookup and had a child with her and we are still doing great to this day.
I just wish my penis didn't do the thinking for me that night, love my child and see him regularly regardless but it's kind of awkward how it all came to pass lol!
Dean Malenko; the man of 1000 rolls. Lol DQ by roll, that’s a first. 🤣
I really want to hear Dean discuss this but I don't think he ever has lol
Kidman looked pissed off and I don't blame him
Me either, this paperview was catered for kidman to go over and in the very first match this happens 😅
LOL yikes. It would’ve been nice to tell Kidman “grab a mic and tell me you want to win the right way and force a restart” but this was the end of WCW so…
They were still like 3 or 4 years away from going out of business. They still had J.J. Dillon in the back who probably mentioned this exact thing. Bischoff probably overruled him though. It wouldn't have worked anyways. Kidman's the heel. He shouldn't want to win the right way.
@@ozzamus WCW was over with by 2001

Can’t blame Dean. It’s the booker’s fault for coming up with such an unnecessary rule and Dean’s natural instinct as a performer simply kicked in and totally forgot about such a pointless rule.
I totally understand Kidman looking pissed though, especially this is an opener and more importantly a wrestling match like this could very well elevate him to the next level if this botch didn’t happen.
Nah I blame Dean. It’s not that obscure of a match. It’s just like a 2 man battle royal.
It's all over his face at the end, he knew he made a rookie mistake. You can tell he took pride in his craft.
Years and years of muscle memory. I don't fault Malenko for this. Easy mistake when you think about it.

Catch as catch can was never really a name given in modern wrestling, I’d be surprised to see if any bout was titled as this in the last 20 or so years.. catch as catch can is a style used mainly in older matches in UK (also called Lancashire wrestling, due to its origin)..
Catch as catch can style was often used, not specifically titled that but matches built around that style were pretty common
@@rainbowraisin3733 obviously certain moves are definitely derived from this early style, but there aren’t many popular modern day matches that are based purely around 1 style of wrestling! That usually comes down to who’s participating in the match.. I’m currently sitting around 5-10 miles away from the snake pit.. if you know you know, if not this comment isn’t worth replying to! 👍
@Scar Face I’m very much aware, I’m in Liverpool (Lancashire) just 10 mins down the road from where most of these names are from an also from the world renowned snake pit, I’m also friends with many of the billington family.. rip Tommy billington / David smith if you know , you know! ✌🏻
Catch as catch can was big in the early 1900s in America too and actually is where pro wrestling evolved from
I've been watching Dean malinko since I was a kid I even knew his nickname the Iceman. And I'm not surprised that most of the generation don't know who he is unless you grew up in the 90s watching WCW like I have.

Man these people need to stop shitting on WCW. Some of the best WWE wrestlers were WCW wrestlers:
Jericho, Benoit, Rey, Sting, Flair, Booker T, Eddie Guerrero, Goldberg, Dustin Rhodes (Goldust), didn’t HHH start off in WCW? Paul White aka the big show.
And even those that weren’t “great” WWE wrestlers were still great wrestlers:
The ENTIRE cruiserweight division including the LWO (specifically Kidman, Juvi, Psychosis, Liger, Lash Leroux, Jimmy Yang, Jaime Noble, Elix Skipper aka “Primetime”, Dean Malenko), then you had guys like “Above Average” Mike Sanders, the Cat, Konan, DDP, The Steiners, Raven and his Flock, Chris Kanyon, Hugh Morris, Alex Wright, Disco Inferno, Scott Norton, Crowbar, Vito and Johnny the Bull, Kwiwi, Rico, Shane Helms (Aka the hurricane), Evan Courageous, Shannon Moore (the 3 of them made 3 count), Saturn, Buff Bagwell, Vampiro, Jerry Only (mainly because I’m a Misfits fan), El Dandy, La Parka, I know Lance Storm was an ECW original but his bit as the leader of team Canada was epic. I would say Brian Adams and Wrath but they were in WWF first. And the women- Tori Wilson, Stacy Keibler, Major Gunnz, i liked Daphne but idk what happened to her.
I’m sure there are more but look you can’t trash WCW because they made the WWE work harder and if it was so trash why did they hire all their guys even Eric Bischoff.
You forgot SCSA
I wouldn't go so far to call Bagwell a WWE wrestler, he wrestled 1 match, one of the worst I've ever seen
Taker was in Wcw prior to WWE as Mean Mark Callous, Hall/Nash had runs with the company prior to being Razor and Diesel as did Edge (Damien Striker)
Sting had maybe 3 matches in the WWE.
Daphne is gone.
Kidman had a closed fist! DQ!!!! 🤣
Kidman was amazing.
This was the same night Benoit won the title as he, Perry Saturn, and Malenko would leave WCW the next night!
Dean checked out a day early
Eerie how the bell rang out the matches end, yet such a sound more than sufficed in detail to describe the rapidly approaching doom of WCW.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall backstage. My god
I didn’t think this was a botch. I thought it would be the only way Billy Kidman could win a technical match.
Thanks for sharing. Props to everyone making a smooth transition.
Good observation

Then it ruins the entire integrity of the match. Your rules are bent for this match then why not all matches?
@@charlesmarcus7864 Because it was underwhelming and obviously botched. I'm sure the crowd wasn't happy either, just like when the royal rumble was restarted between Batista and John Cena

He was never a ring general, but he was definitely an underrated technician. One of the best workers ever really
Today, refs would panic and let the match continue and the commentators would need to improv some excuse for why the match could continue.
you can be a great technical wrestler but you also need to always be selling the gimmick, plus a million other things, in front of thousands of people. wrestling is hard.

Or perhaps there was some gay panic there. Billy was very pretty, and his character started as a hustler, after all...
And that's suppose to be his main thing. No Charisma, No Cheating, No Gimmicks. Just a straight faced technician. This was his moment. He blew it.

refs in wwe, and i'm assuming in wcw considering vince russo was head of creative, are taught if the match comes down to the the refs needing to call for the bell or looking like the rules dont matter, the refs need to call for the bell. Theres obviously times the ref should hear something they pretend they dont, or they tirn around half a second early and have to pretend they didnt see something. but stuff like this, count out, pinfalls. if the choice is counting to 3 or looking dumb, they want refs to count to 3. they want refs to ring the bell.
If this was WWE they would have had vince come out and said dean was hovering and he didn't actually touch the floor, therefore, this match continues!! Ring the bell! *crowd goes wild*

I remember this match I was a young man and I was very shocked and how it was over cuz I knew Billy Kidman's tough he's fast and everything but I knew it was a shooting for the malenko the Iceman but he made that mistake and when he rolled up the ring I got confused I was like well doesn't that mean the match is over and then they started saying it's over and then that's when I started thinking well what are they going to do I mean it's professional wrestling maybe those change something but no they stuck to their guns match was over they stuck to the rules
Billy was awesome during this era
