I agree 💯 percent. I lived with my now husband for a while. I paid for the groceries. He paid for everything else. When we got married, he gave me the checkbook. I'm better with paying bills then he is. I'm the tax preparer. He's the cook. We have been happily married for almost 35 years. We have never had an argument about money. There's trust in our relationship. He never asks if the bills are paid. I got us. He makes the money and always says "our" money.

I can relate to this topic based on my experience. I'm a 36 year old woman that makes my own money now. When I was 27 I ended a relationship with my ex, a man who provided for me and bought me a lot of material things. When I no longer wanted to be in the relationship he demanded back EVERYTHING that he bought for me. He would show up at my place of work unannounced to intimate me, harrass me with messages one minute insulting me and apologizing on th next one. I was fortunate because I had a job so I PAID him back in exchange for my peace. Having your own money as a woman can be buy you peace and freedom.

He also said in that video, and I paraphrase, that she's not going to be "stacking" her cash at his expense. I believe the mindset of many American black men (when it comes to marriage ) needs to be fully understood. They have been conditioned NOT to see marriage as a partnership. They are used to being carried and coddled by black women. Black men invented the 50/50 foolishness, and I believe it is only expected from nonblack women.

Beautiful ladies!❤Eboni should marry a man who respects her and her ambition and her wealth because SOMETIMES men get jealous and insecure. I left my ex husband because he became jealous and angry each time I got a raise, promotion and academic achievement which benefitted our family but which he tried to sabotage. I left and never looked back because he hated and ridiculed my ambition while he extolled the same in others. Instead of working on goals for himself his controlling behavior was the demise of our relationship.

My four sisters and I confronted him and told him to stop bullying and disrespecting her. Furthermore, he beat her bloody, was arrested but still tried to justify his behavior. She left him, remarried to a high school teacher, had a daughter who we consider our niece and my mother considered her granddaughter. When my sister in law got her own place with her sons we made sure she had money groceries and her boys were well taken care of. However, my brother demanded we not help her but we just ignored him. Aunty Fumi and Fumination,
To be fair to Dwayne Wade, my understanding of his reference to 'my house', had to do with the house which he had owned outright, perhaps before he and Sister Gabrielle Union got together...like the house she met him with and moved into.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in NO WAY excusing Dwayne Wade's remarks, because he could have been more sensitive to the fact that he was no longer single, and therefore it was now an 'our house' kinda situation.
Let me say however, as an independent-minded sister, who had vowed at a very young age, to never be dependent on any man, I can absolutely relate to, and do support Sister Gabrielle's position... going forward, it's going to be 'OURS' in every sense of the word - Sis was making sure she had skin in the game up front AND she made sure to check him right then and there, so he couldn't say he didn't know.
As usual, Aunty Fumi, you (and the beautiful Christina) have brought such balance and clarity to this matter.
Honestly, I can't understand the mindset of some of our fellow sisters - wanting to be INDEPENDENT , LIBERATED WOMEN, AND YET STILL WANTING TO HAVE A MAN COMPLETELY SUPPORT THEM FINANCIALLY! Seems hypocritical to me 🤔, IJS.

Fumi, it’s very unsafe for a woman to marry a man who has less (especially black women). I don’t care what they say they ultimately can’t take it. I promise you they will turn on you. Also, it’s about class. It was horrible when I married a garbage man. His friends and their women couldn’t stand me because they said I was stuck up and he always felt that my friends thought he was a scrub. But it was all in their minds.

A woman marrying a man who is lower than her in social-economic scale rarely ever works. The man will resent. Man even resent woman who work harder than them. Men demand respect, and struggle with the idea of demanding respect from a woman who is higher than them on the social economic scale.
It’s only in our dysfunctional community where a woman should pull a brother up. Who pulled Ebony up? Why can’t the man pull himself up. If he can’t pull up himself how on earth would he lead and take care of a family. My goodness.

All that work you have done out of love thinking this man will appreciate you for believing in him, will be in vein he leaves you high and dry. Speaking out of experience , so I will never bring a man up to my level if he has less , he must already be on my level or passed my level. To be honest aunt Fumi the calibre of men now a days , getting the person you are describing is far and few between. The men are not the same anymore it’s like finding a needle in a hay stack but in the same breath you are 100 % correct that we should both contribute to the relationship it’s very important and also liberating as a women because when he leaves what will you have to show if his the only one providing , how will you get back on your feet? so definitely ladies work, hustle out there ,it’s very important to be independent that way and together build your marriage financial and in all areas.

I know ordinary women who married men who earned less than them and the man quit his job after he found out how much the wife makes. The lawyer answers based on where she came from.
Personally I wouldn't marry someone who earns less than me neither. I've been there done that. Nah never again.

Fumi i think when a lot of blackwomen talk about wanting a man to take care of them financially, they want the traditional man. They also want to be taking care of the home, children and their husband. No one is taking advantage of eachother. I also get the idea that allowing a man to take care of you financially can be daunting because they can use it to control you. Been a housewife is a full time job but just to be safe you gotta have to have something for yourself. A lot of blackwomen yearn for this traditional lifestyle because they never had as the men aren't about that life. That's why it does kind of sound delusional when blackwomen say they want a traditional man when blackmen never have been and will never be and if they are they use it to control you . Unless blackwomen expand their dating pool.

They should date african men. Or expand to men of other races. My african dad paid for all our private schooling, houses, cars. My mom paid only for food n groceries n she was an accomplished medical professional.

I've seen men of every ethnicity and color who acted like trash and men of every ethnicity and color who were true gentlemen. This isn't about ethnicity. It's about getting to know the person in front of you and being discerning. You are in for a heap of trouble if you're using ethnicity as a proxy for people's personalities and values.

I would have walked. That said everything she had to know. I always planned to take care of myself and always have, this life is too hard to put that burden on anyone else and if I was to partner with someone it would be to make our lives better in every way possible. If you marry or partner with someone for their money what happens if the money is gone?

If I’m working I will always contribute to whatever household I belong in cos I was doing it before the man came along. Still, if he is making way more than I am AND can see that I’m struggling but does not offer to help me out, that’s a hard NO. I’m not for Gabrielle and Dwayne’s situation, their marriage looks messy in more ways than one other than financially.
I appreciate all of your advice and points of view ❤, but honestly I’d rather be alone than date and still be worried about my bills. Relationships are more than that yes, companionship, commitment, etc but look, if I’m worried about finances, I won’t want to be around you and vice versa. I want someone to add to my life, not necessarily be a provider, but let us elevate each other.
I’m so happy to hear your stories, and Ola is such a supportive husband and father.

This entire discussion should be about the Black community, because the Black Men in our community are not pulling their weight in the relationship. Black women have NEVER been housewives and/or kept women. Black women have always worked AND took care of the household, their men and children.

I was about to take a critical stance but you both are speaking through experience. Marriage takes team work and a lot of communication. We all know how life can take an unexpected turn. We say “for better or for worse” but I believe we don’t truly understand what that means until we experience it.
