Perfect Game of Pac-Man - Stages 255-256 - 3,333,360 Points

- Thanks for a quarter million views, for whatever it is worth. (I do not monetize videos. This is all for fun)
This is me playing Pac-Man to achieve the maximum possible score of 3,333,360.
EDIT) Geez, some people just don't know nor want to look it up. The score only holds 6 digits and it rolls over three times at 1, 2 and 3 million points. I have videos at those key levels as well as videos of other levels on my channel and a page with some key links. aaronin.jp/pacm...
And yes, I am well aware of Billy Mitchel and many others that have done this before me, and on arcade machines to boot.
For everything on Pac-Man including why it glitches up on level 256, refer to the Pac-Man Dossier at www.gamasutra.c...
I took my footage of the 2nd last level and the split screen for this video.
On the last level, you cannot finish it. You can only get the left half, the one key,and the 9 dots on the right side that reappear every time you lose a man.
Again, the score rolls over every million points in case you were wondering. I have other videos of that happening too on my youtube channel. I also have a partially made page with some of the videos at aaronin.jp/inde...
Also, the ghosts follow a set algorithm (each one has a different one, actually) and can be controlled and influenced by the player. There is no trickery or tomfoolery here. The ghosts really are dumb, especially in a level that is horrendously broken to begin with; I'm lucky it is playable at all.
Sorry for disabling comments from time to time. I'm just getting too many people asking the same things already answered in this description and also I have no time nor patience to deal with troublesome users. Thanks for all the positive comments, though. If you want to reach me, I'm under this same name "Aaron Tokunaga" on Facebook. If you are only here to troll and/or are too ignorant to read the description or links before insulting me, your comments are subject to deletion and your account subject to blocking. You can shout "FAKE" all you want, but it isn't. Have a nice day.
For those wondering, he died on purpose. Every time you die on the kill screen, the pellets on the right hand side regenerate, and you can eat them again and get more points. You don't lose points for dying, and you can't beat the kill screen anyway.
I caught on to that but one thing I couldn't figure out was why level 256 is messed up. Does it start with level 1 (not 0) in the level byte? So When 255 wrapped back to 0 (when he reached 256), was it actually trying to show the playfield BEFORE the cherry level? I can see how that would pull strange things from memory!
if you ask google why the max is 3333360, theres a substack article that gets into binary and the overflow of the 'integer' variable due to "256" being "100000000" in binary... yt wont let me link it here or i would... here ill try linking this yt video that explains it
ua-cam.com/video/NKKfW8X9uYk/v-deo.html
@@snarevox What was the title and author of the substack post? Or you can just give an exact quote.
@@Eudaletism ok i shortened the thing and im trying to post it here for you
BIT DOT LY SLASH 3hRXqhi
you know what to do right?
@@Eudaletism also, the yt link in my comment ↑ that you replied to explains it very well
Here's why it happens: Pacman operates on an 8 bit processor and it can only go up to 255 (11111111 in binary) and 256 is too big for the processor
Thx, captain
Dalton G But binary starts from 0, so there are 256 numbers really
BuRRak 5 months late but that means it take 256 fruits and tries to draw them all on the screen at once creating the glitch we have today
Basicly the game ran out of memory for the other half of the level 256
also the original games didnt have any memory and the creator of pacman didn't think anyone would get that high
I love how he has a complete understanding of the glitched areas.
I think he's just looking at the left side since the maze is perfectly symmetrical down the middle, so he can guess what the glitched side would look like when he mirrors the left
『Castafiore』 the side aren't symmetrical google it
i suppose if you have just played through 255 levels you will learn the layout
GD Fast The sides are symmetrical, no need to google it, just rewind the video and look at the maze, it is easily perfect symmetry.
He: like im take my time and die to get a lot of points
The final split screen was mentioned in Ready Player One, and I wanted to see what it looked like! Thanks!
I came here because of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I came here because I felt like it. But I watched a Dookieshed lootcrate unboxing, and he got that book too. Coincidences are always nice, aren't they?
And if you don't know who that is, you should look him up.
***** SAME!
Christian Thorpe LOL i thought I was the only one who had done this!!
+Christian Thorpe Just finished the book yesterday, so fantastic; Spielberg is doing the movie in '17.
There is an Atari 2600 game called "YAR'S REVENGE" that I used to play for hours, days even. Anyways, I got to be so good at it, that I could not loose to the computer. Once I hit a certain threshold, the screen would do something similar to what you've got going on with your Pac-Man game.
Where you have vertical static, Yars Revenge would have a horizontal band of static that went right through the horizontal and vertical center of the screen. I guess the game devs thought that would make it more difficult to play, but I really don't know. What I do know is that static never really got in my way; I could see through it and just kept on beating the damn thing.
Good Times! Thanks for sharing this video Aaron, and helping me to recall a bit of my childhood that I would otherwise might not have remembered.
YOU DID IT! YOU HAVE THE HIGH SCORE OF THE DAY!! 3,333,360!
Go for the World Record Now!! 999,990! lol
Well, the score does rollover after 999,990, you know. I have videos on my page of the stages where the score rolls over if you are interested but all those stages use the same pattern.
Aaron Chmielowiec Yeah I know it rolls over at 999,990 points!
+All Access Gaming hey do you know where can i download the classic arcade games,Pac-man in general
CrazyMarkSRB MAME is one place to get the original arcade version of Pac-Man.
Remembered pacman when talking about retro games and was curious how many stages it had. it blew my mind!
is their any hard but beatable game that no one has cleared!?
Some of the oldest arcade games have kill screens like Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, etc. Ms Pac Man also glitches out. I'm not sure on any older retro "beatable but unbeaten" since most of them were never designed with an end in mind; they just keep looping forever, sometimes with random/set variables or changes for each level.
amazing. fantastic respect to you sir. and to do it with the arrow keys (which MUST be more difficult than a joystick!) deserves a salute. very well done indeed.
Yeah he's right^ If you listen to the first guy who beated Pacman (with a Joystick ofcourse), you can hear him saying: At some point, the timing of the Joystick is very important, and if you're even a 10th of a second to late you will lose.
The Snooker Gym Arrow keys are much easier than a joystick
For all who are about to comment "this is 333,360" or something to that effect, do me a favor and look at the description. In fact, you might want to do that for every video on UA-cam. You never know what kind of information you'll find there, and it might be important to make sense of the video.
+Alex R. (ATG) Most videos have descriptions of "subscribe here" "buy our swag here" "terrible music on intro can be found here", that is why most people ignore it nowadays.
Arda ÖZKAL
8 years on UA-cam and I never figure that out and have to have it told to me...well, guess I can't blame most people, then.
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Someday I might want to try that on an actual arcade cabinet (there are retro cabs here with a ton of games on them, Pac-Man being one of them). It wouldn't really count for anything more if I did that (I'm not looking for TwinGalaxies recognition) but it would be nice to do that in a public venue, or at least the first 20 stages before the tedium starts setting in when all 9th key stages are the same.
255 is beaten, next he will successfully divide by zero
Way to go. How many tries did that take?
Gary Lu Productions I had some of the patterns on the earlier levels down when I was in elementary school in the 80s but I didn't pick it up again until after university. I finally got it down enough to get to the glitched level in the late 2000s and got a perfect score a few times from 2012 and decided to take parts of my runs and put them on UA-cam for posterity. I didn't think this silly thing would really have many people interested in it.
I would be interested in officiating it on a real machine someday but I haven't looked too much into that.
Thank you for your comment.
Blood Pressure through the roooooof!
(663000 + 1220 + 540 (dots)) + (2459600 + 5000 (fruit)) + (204000 (ghosts)) = 3333360
Perfect Game of Pacman!
wow and using arrow keys is even harder great going!
Surprisingly, I didn't find the arrow keys that bad when I got used to it. I was actually having a lot of trouble with the PS4 version, surprisingly. I tried the patterns but your character sometimes gets stuck in a corner despite already holding the direction you want to go next. I got around that by lifting up my finger and pressing the direction again (before hitting the corner) but the controls in general felt like they had some issues.
QUESTION, PLEASE -- Did you use any books (Mastering PacMan, for example) in order to help you with the patterns? Did you yourself research and discover patterns? What do you think about the Google PacMan as compared with the 1980s arcade PacMan? ANOTHER QUESTION, PLEASE -- And, finally, if you were to play the 1980s PacMan WITHOUT USING ANY PATTERNS, please let me get an idea on what you would score. I myself used to play the 1980s PacMan that used to be so ubiquitous in bars and restaurants. I learned the patterns for most of the boards and often scored in the several hundreds; however, when NOT using any patterns at all, the highest I would do was about 150,000-200,000 on a very good day, my average improvising between 75,000 and 125,000. Thanks in advance for any feedbacks. Again, thanks for this very generous tutorial upload!
A true master of the game sharing knowledge, thank you! 👍😎✌🗽
Going to check that out. Thanks for the recommendation!
NICE JOB reaching the perfect score on pac man has always been a life goal of mine
Having 3 or 5 lives set as the maximum in the system (dip switch) settings does affect the maximum possible score but Billy Mitchell is credited with an arcade high score of 3,333,360.
Wil Wheaton reading the audio book is also a fun way to experience it. The book actually mentions him at one point, you can hear him smiling.
Bwahaha, it's like saying Billy Mitchell didn't have a perfect game for the same reason. Learn the game before you criticize it so you don't look like a fool. It is not possible to beat the split screen level. The game ends there. You have no choice but to sacrifice your men and maximize whatever score you can get.
If you read the novel "Ready Player One" part of the treasure hunt for the Multi-Billion Dollar Easter Egg is scoring a perfect game of Pacman, and he goes through everything including the split screen at the end.
Excellent! Performing so exceptionally well in PacMan is far more harder than practically any sports. I only wish these expert players would be paid -- and very handsomely -- for so much effort they have put into achieving such amazingly miraculous scores. Thanks so much for the video. You deserve my highest-ever compliments! And, I wish you the best of luck and success in whatever you aspire.
how are you playing on your computer? is there a download of the original game?
Did you had a little bit too much free time?
Yes and no. This was before my daughter was born and my clients/work only kept me out of the house part of the day. Since then I've started my own business and that keeps me busy these days. (Edit> A blocked user asked so I'll respond anyway). I currently do contract IT work (database/server management, illustration work, rhythmic (Eurythmic) lesson plans for childrens and adults as well as seminars and Some Japanese->English translation)
I've been playing since I was 5 (Pac-Man at the supermarket near my house) and after the first 20 levels it is the same pattern until level 256. It's more of a stamina problem than a skill one, honestly. There is a site "nrchapman" that has a bunch of pac-man patterns if you ever wanted to try it out.
This might be a stupid question, but why doesn't the ghosts turn blue after eating the big dots? Smaller timeframe on later levels?
8-bit overfloor. In 8-bit can be 256numbers - lol, it can generate it, it start gliches and other.
I declare you king of retro gaming!
Reminds me of the Minecraft far lands when you hit 12million blocks back in beta :)
Awesome accomplishment dude. It might be an old vid, but to play pac man to that level takes dedication.
On the 5th key level (17th Stage) and every stage from the 7th key level (19th stage) onward, the energizers have no effect on the ghosts (the effect is nullified immediately). They are only useful for altering the directions of the ghosts at that point.
Oh so thats how the last level is corrupted
Da Twinkie it's not corrupted
Twinkie Gobbler The game runs out of storage
it's called a bug. He could have prevented it by using another scoring mechanism in his program. He should have used if - then clause to zero the variable which shows the score and add 1 to the second variable in the array then display them both; then it wouldn't have crashed. But do understand, storage room was pretty little these days. Today we laugh about 64kb storage. In those days that was huge.
It's a glitch, but nothing to do with the scoring. The problem is an integer overflow that causes the routine which draws the little keys and things on the bottom of the level to draw 256 "keys" (it starts off normal but quickly starts loading incorrect data), which fills up the right half of the screen with random letters and dots.
how do you think it could be prevented then ? it's clear to me the game should go on and on without garblin the screen.
From the Pac-Man Dossier:
Q:What is a “perfect score”?
A:A perfect score in Pac-Man is 3,333,360 points, which can only be attained by playing a perfect game. This requires catching all four ghosts at every energizer, getting every bonus fruit, and never once losing a life for 256 consectutive levels of play. All extra lives are needed once the split screen is reached to eat the nine dots hidden on the right side of the screen the maximum number of times-they respawn every time a life is lost.
How did you get ahold of this Pacman version? it seems like most versions I find online, are simple ripoffs of the game(I can tell because they usually release all 4 ghosts right from the start of level 1)
You can get the arcade emulator MAME and seek out the official Pac-Man ROM image dump to play it. There were a few bootleg arcade releases as well which are also available but I went with what I knew as the first official American release by Namco in 1980.
parzival on his day off
What program are you using?
Did you get the 1981 quarter in your inventory?
Respect. You, in my book are 100% Badass, with sunglasses on.
The reason level 256 is like this on a traditional 8-bit pac-man game is because of how a computer counts, they count in binary. for example, 1 in binary is 1, 2 = 1 0, 3= 1 1, 4= 1 0 0, 8 = 1 0 0 0. 8bit refers to the numbers of ones and zeroes there are to count up to. so 255 in binary is 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1. The problem occurs when a player finishes that level, the game adds 1, but the entire number system resets to 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 , (or simply 0). This is what causes the glitches.
Where did you play that game on?
@Tymetwister It most certainly is a perfect game. No lives lost until the split screen and you have to sacrifice your lives to get the 9 hidden dots that respawn on the split screen with each life. Only then can you get the maximum possible score of 3,333,360
Wait is Boby Mitchell has been beaten
Why does it only say 333,360 in the top left corner?
Because the game resets your score every time you hit a million points.
I can't believe nobody mentioned it, but congratulations on a 9th key pattern less than 45 seconds. Mine is twice that long and with 4 pauses and that inhibits me from breaking the first million. I'm going to try to learn yours.
I can't believe how little so many know about Pacman. How can people call themselves a "gamer" if all they can tell you about is the newest release of Call of Doodie?
The Zombie I'm pretty sure they know about Pacman well ik I do
the reason 256 is like that is because it is written in hexadecimal and it caps off at 255 so when it hits lv 256 it doesn't know what to do and glitches out
The reason why the last level is split is because the original pac-man game couldn't hold enough memory. And when you beat it it go's blank. It dosn't say game over. It go's black.
HipDog Log123 *Goes
The Roblox Kid Goes*
Ja Foo Foo Gaming Goes*
***** This does not seem to be the case. if you add one to 255, you get 0. So the game should restart from the first level. Unless the last level is actually the 0, which is buggy.
256 is 0
Thank you 🙂
You are right that the last dots have to be eaten by kamikazes though. As you can see in the video here, there are 9 hidden dots that respawn with each life
what emulator did you use?
how did you get pacman to work on your pc?
It would loop back to 0, and 0 would be the state of the "Insert Coin(s)" screen, thus the game loads data to the improper spots.
Well, Billy "beat" the game in the exact same way I did, though he did it first on an actual arcade machine (and others have done it after him, too). There is no end to this 256th level; you have to lose all your lives there but you can maximize your score by getting one half of the screen, the one fruit that appear, and the 9 dots that regenerate (for whatever bug/reason) on the right side with each life.
wow this was impressive how did you do so well and half the time you ran into the ghosts
and they moved out the way is this cause you know the programming so well or what cause i fail at pacman ;)
Aaron where can I get the Mame Emulator and the ROM that you are using for Windows 10? (without a virus XD)
Please link me to both if possible.
Thank you
personally, i like the extra bit of challenge the joystick provides.
2 words game genie
Sal khan that would certainly make it possible to correct the kill screen and let the game go forever but I'm fine that it ends. Is there even game genie for mame?
3 words... you're an idiot.
How do we know you didn't just load a save state (which many exist at that level) then just play from there? Legit or not you don't show anything leading up to it so in the end it means jack shit.
Can you please tell me where you bought the Pac-Man game? Please
+Mjsonic1 There is a version on steam now.
If you are referring to how the ghosts behave on stage 256, that is how it is; the stage is broken due to a programming oversight by the original programmers and you're lucky the stage is playable at all. You are playing in a level of chaos and bugs to start with anyway.
what is that computer from?? it looks cool
This? Oh, it's an old Asus I got on sale years ago (2010?) It actually has served me very well though it is rather heavy and hard to lug around. I'm currently on a Vaio Duo 11 tablet hybrid for work but that Asus still works fine and is on the first floor of my house.
You are 19272818272% better than me in that game
You mean over 9000 times better?
i got to lvl 257. the ghosts don't go blue and they are more aggressive(thx hax)
if you cant read i used hacks
Integer wrapping error
actually you just went back to level 1
db I like how you got more likes
CaptainAKG lol
wow, perfect game is really sick!!!
Do you have "save file" of the level 256?
Hey Aaron! I'm really impressed! I would love to try for myself but can't find a download for a pc version anywhere! Is there a safe place to download it for Windows machines? :) Thanks in advance.
Actually, a 16 bit processor can. 1111111111111111 in binary = 65535 in decimal. The problem is, the level counter was stored in one byte (8 bits), or 11111111 in binary = 255 in decimal. To get to 256 would require a second byte. The software tries, and fails, to accommodate this by drawing 256 fruits on the screen, breaking that side of the puzzle.
Imagine this at school and more people are looking at your computer than looking at the board
Where is the most significant digit? Score says 333,360.. Isn't it supposed to be 3,333,360
Hey guys! There is a new update of Pacman 256: ua-cam.com/video/M-PAz6RRRu8/v-deo.html Check it out! =)
What link was this on?
Pac Man 256 on PS4 brought me here, just doing some research to see where exactly "Glitchy" came from.
Me too.
It's an old programming error with the original game. It's written up in Chapter 5 at www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3938/the_pacman_dossier.php?print=1
"Why does this broken level happen in the first place? The culprit is the routine responsible for drawing the bonus symbols along the bottom edge of the screen. Here's what happens: when level 256 is reached, the internal level counter is incremented to 255 (the level counter starts at zero - not one) and the routine for drawing the bonus symbols is called.
The routine loads the current level counter value (255) into a CPU register and increments that register by one. Unfortunately, 255 is the largest number that can fit in a single byte which is the size of the Z-80 CPU registers, so when the value is incremented the overflow is discarded leaving a zero in the register instead of the expected value of 256. This zero value leads the routine to believe this is an early level since its value is less than seven.
The routine starts drawing bonus symbols using the confused register as a counter. At the end of every drawing loop, the register is decreased by one and then checked to see if it is zero (the signal for the routine to stop drawing symbols). Since the register already has a zero in it to start, the first decrement will roll the value back to 255. It will keep decrementing the register and drawing symbols until the register is reduced to zero again, causing the loop to run a total of 256 times.
This means that memory locations outside the bounds of the bonus symbol table are drawn to the screen at increasing locations in video memory. This half-broken level was named the "split screen" by players; developers refer to it as a "kill screen"."
nice job "milking the last nine points on the fabled split screen." also came here because of ready player one.
How did you get pac-man on your computer?
MAME for your PC and the 1980 Namco version of the Pac-Man ROM
That’s very impressive props to you
what website is this??? Please tell me
this is terrifying
WTF! what level is that @0:57 255 or 256?
Were did you get pacman on your pc.
It's the original Namco ROM running through MAME. If you look up MAME (MAME32 or MAME64 for windows) you should find what you are looking for.
i never seen before thanks congrats too
Nice!
Where did that high score come from?
Is there a way to beat that level?
Where can I download this?
he know the Algorithm of PACMAN GAME !!
Amazing run man!!! So much stupid in the comments, I must go before my head reaches its kill screen.
256 is BROKEN
What happens does the game just stop and doesn't take you to the next stage?
Yeah, there is an overflow bug in the original game that makes that "last" stage unbeatable.
Because, after Level 17, The Power Pellet Doesn,t Scare The Ghosts
HI GUYS... I'M GOING TO POST A RELATIVELY SHORT POST BECAUSE I WANNA SAY SOMETHING
1. i don't get time to come here a lot, but if i get a notification i was always reply
2. to Everyone who doesn't want to read my LONG LONG POST hehe ....... DON'T READ IT.... No one is forcing you
3. To everyone who thanked me for it
I really did not expect you guys to say that stuff, but i ... REALLY REALLY REALLY FUCKING APPRECIATE IT ... ok guys
thanks heaps
i get a real rush from helping people
now... i've had some of you say you Passed Tests with flying colours
i've had others tell me i'm awesome
and i've had others praise me further
I'll be honest, i'm used to people telling me i write a lot
My point is.... I don't try to write a lot, INSTEAD, i TRY TO GIVE AN ACCURATE AND COMPLETE ANSWER.
which.. USUALLY ends up being longf
what can you do
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THOSE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THANKED ME
SO.... thanks heaps guys
Billy Mitchell did the *exact* same thing I did (probably different patterns or routines, though). You can not get the ghosts past the 18th level (The 17th also has a power pellet time of 0 sec) i.e. The 4th and 6th key levels respectively
You can not get every ghost on every level when the power pellet time is 0 seconds.
His record is 3,333,360, the exact same as mine (though he did it on a real arcade machine and was the first). There are simply no more points to get.
because the creators never thought of that
they did a five facts of pacman and everyone wants to see what that final broken level looks like
2:13 for one extremely short frame it shows the un-glitched maze
Because the game tried to render 256 fruits.
Wow, this is amazing! Only possible thing that could have been more legit is if you had played it on an actual Pacman machine instead of an emulator.
ok, in the arcade game, the level 256 is the final stage
but in the nes version? version of 2011? (2011: www.thepcmanwebsite.com/media/pacman_flash/)
however, you are a realy good player
Hey, I got an idea.. What if you follow the path of the other screen on the covered screen? Maybe it's the same as the other half
Unfortunately, it actually isn't. The game is glitched at this point and there are only 9 dots on the right side that actually respawn with each life (which is why you have to purposely die) and the behavior is chaotic on the right side. The game ends here regardless of what you do, though if you have the PS4 version in the options menu you can disable the Level 256 bug.
Is it true that if you beat level 256 the game will go back to 1 but with harder ghosts?
There actually is an excellent writeup at donhodges.com/how_high_can_you_get2.htm on this. If you patch the game to fix the 256 bug, the game loops around again to the cherry stage yet the ghosts still follow the same 9th key pattern and the power pellets don't do anything. You can basically use the 9th key pattern until the end of time or you die of exhaustion.
Cool, I really wanted to check this out because I just bought Pac-Man 256 on the PS4 and they said that it's based of this glitch
Yep, I actually have the PS4 version as well. I'm pleased it's arcade perfect in that all of the old algorithms and patterns still work. If you ever feel like adding me on PSN I'm "archmiel"
actually the game cant comprehend this level cause of the whole 16 but processor only being able to count to 255 and 256 is non exsistant causing a glitch in the pacman universe
Because how many people actually get through 255 levels on one quarter?
Twice. Once you get past the first 20 stages the rest of the game is the same pattern up to stage 255. I have gone past the first 20 stages and eventually just stopped because I could not spare the time, though.
