- How to win at Pacman , by learning 4 simple patterns. That's not as difficult as it sounds, especially as two of the patterns are amlost the same as each other. This set of patterns will get you all the way to level 256 where the game crashes. Please note. this is the arcade machine, the original 1980 rom set from Namco. The patterns may not work on other pacman games.

I bought a booklet back in the early '80's that had all the patterns to each screen in it. I laid on my bed one evening and memorized every pattern and started playing like a pro!

I picked up the same thing sometime in the mid 80's. Was on the endcap of the checkout lane. Man... wish I still had that.
You have a lot better memory than I do than I would forget the first pattern.
I remember always making it to the 9th Key back in 1980. The cops would come marching into the candy store and rip the plug out of the wall and tell me to go to school. I would tell them that I was suspended and that they owed me a quarter.

Also, to those saying this doesn't work, some ROMS have slightly different ghost patterns, so some adjustments might be required. This version will work on the original arcade cabinet, MAME, 60-in-1, etc.

To those who are complaining, you're right that this doesn't give you a perfect score, and does require a bit of improvising at the end of each pattern. However, they are a heck of a lot easier to learn than the full pattern for each level. So this can be considered the "beginners method", that is good to start out with and should still improve your score.
Thanks again. Also, I know some players want to get 100%, where others want to race through the first few patterns, so I wanted to give people the choice. It's more to remember if I do a 100% complete route for the first 2 patterns, and nothing can go wrong so early in the game when you have 4 pills in 4 corners.
It gets really freaking hard to improvise the four corners (especially top left) on boards 12-20, seeing as they eventually stop turning blue
very good 9th key pattern. 52 seconds to complete, so can complete 60 boards in 52 minutes or the game in less than 4 hours.
More importantly, no pauses or 180 degree turns, which are what can break a pattern.
I never knew about the patterns when I played this in my youth, but I'd make a quarter last forever!

Im using a namco plug and play, the pattern works up untill clyde is supposed to come out. then it goes dowb hill. Is tbere a pattern for my version?

Thank you for this I have a pacman arcade1up and I suck at it after learning these I was able to get to the galaxian icon maze I still have a little bit of troubke learning the apple pattern but I have most of it down and then wing the rest it tends to work most or the time
i actually learned the first pattern on my own when i first played pac man... so i got pretty good at it

@@danielallison402 it only works on versions of pac man that use the orignal arcade rom the NES version has the ghosts programmed differently hence why the pattern does not work

I had a book from the early 80’s that helped me and soon afterwards I made it to the keys with no problem. Beforehand, I was lucky to make it to the second peach or first apple!

Do these patterns work for the Arcade1up Namco Legacy? I tried using them and they seem to work half the time…but that could be user error also..

Hey I don’t know if your gonna see this but I think it’s just your emulator but my plug n play for board 5 when I use that pattern when I’m at the top and try to come down to work my way to the middle pinky is always there no matter what

Depends on the ghosts reaction there's a website that explains machine types for the Rom variants if you google around

If one is going for high score ignoring the ‘fruit’ is an error. That’s where you ultimately get the most points, especially in the key levels. I learned this strategy from Uston’s book. When you get to the key levels each one - they appear twice per level - is worth 5000 points. Unfortunately in the ROM I play Uston’s ‘Pattern 4’ only partially works before it breaks down. Even though the rom I have shows the game running in ‘slow’ mode none of Uston’s early patterns work like they did on the original arcade machine. I’m wondering if there are other roms available which are closer to the original. The best I can do presently is get to the first or second apple level with a score of only a bit over 24000. Also, if completing the boards are what you’re after, go for it.

Just curious, why is "The Kiss" necessary? Why can't we just skip those 2 dots, head to the top left, and start eating power pellets (getting the two dots once we get down again to the bottom left)?
Cool video, yours in very similar to a page i found. I have the Jakks Pacific Super Pac-Man TV game. It has Pac Man in it. The first screen works a treat but after that it's completely different. I've been working on slight variations that work but it's frustrating. Any tips?

And another thing that really sucks that I've noticed about this NES classic edition retro 620 games built in the system is that a lot of the games do seem like they're knock offs and a lot of the games are named differently and there's actually a couple of the same game just a different name so it's really not 620 games cuz they use a different name for the same exact game that already in there so maybe that's why the patterns don't work for me

I need help. I’m using the arcade 1 up pac-Man game. The third pattern only works through the second key. My game goes from fruit to something that looks like a bird (2 boards of that) then it switches to something that looks like a pile of gold (also two boards) then it switches to the keys. Your fourth pattern does not work on my third key board either. Any help will be appreciated😃

Back in my days with Atari I found a pattern after 10,000 points starting with the top left pill.... I repeated this pattern until 100,000 points (which at that time my hands gave up on pain). But pain aside, I could have gone non-stop for eternity.

That's what I was wondering, cheating or something because in the original you only got 1 extra life unless you set the default to 5 in the beginning.

For the second pattern when you start to do the same thing as the first pattern the pink ghost goes into the middle square instead of up and always gets me. Any advice?
By the first power pellet you should be able to improvise. Due to random movement when ghosts are blue it is often random. Just keep doing what works.

How is this by any means a coherent pattern? I see what he’s saying but he makes very in the moment decisions several times in the video, which very much lacks any form of ‘pattern.’
The apple pattern I used at the game room on the original pac-man was different than this.
That's not the original 1980's programing, I could get to 36 key level and the ghost still turned blue. This particular tutorial must be from a different era as I remember being able to get all 4 ghost on each power pill am the way to the 3rd key then I was only able to get 3 ghost per pill. Our patterns were different too. We were able to get all the dots and both fruits before eating pwr pills and ghost for a maximum point score on each fruit level. Only the first 3 keys were able to score max level points. If anyone knows the original 5 patterns. Let me know!

on the “easy/normal” setting the ghosts stopped having any blue time on the sixth key. On the more difficult setting, blue time was gone by the second key.
I used to get seven keys but my memory fails me now
The ghosts try and corner you in a position where you cannot escape if I am not mistaken

Im playing pac man and think its (1980 version) and playing on PC and notice that you can't use this pattern?
The ghosts are just going around totally random all the time.. so its fricking hard reach level 10 !!
i thought that all pac man versions was the same, but that's not the case..
For every level the ghosts takes a new route..
And there are no cheating code you can use what so ever..
i was reaching level 13 and got 85K points "that was not easy"..

No, the arcade machine has dip switches inside that switches the order of the patterns, and some copy machines look the same but have different ghost logic.

I own one of those vintage consoles with Pac Man on it and lucky if I get to the first Galaxian or second bell. The patterns aren’t the same on this!

This is not a perfect game pattern: You must nail all ghost every power pill. Using the warp zones to get them to line up. Then saving all your men till the 256 half screen for 90 dot points per left over man. But to just reach 256 it will work...

Pattern only works for round 1 of my Pac-man, every other level that this gets used I lose within the first 10 seconds.

Maybe just me, but these patterns seems very difficult to learn. Maybe practice and memorization? It must take hours to commit to memory
Not really, try to look at the maze as 4 quadrants. Like, instead of trying to remember, "left, down, left, down, right, up" you think, "Ok, so he starts and does all the way left to the bottom then across and up the other side", you know what I mean?

Pacman point is under the pacman the same one that the kangaroo has on its belly aka pacman point bone fish the the back fin from the pacman fish has a bone body and a aeroplane fin on its back which makes it a police blue pacman point and bone body with a white back aeroplane tail and the kangaroo situation was white and the sky
