I wasn't either. I didn't think of it until after the fact but I could have published the first video and then played it off as an April fool's joke since it was April 1st. But the truth is I legit thought I was playing Foxwoods for a year, lol but hopefully it's all still fun

Yes, they surely are the incumbant king of coated strings. Also, I think they might have been the ones that pioneered octagonal cores instead of round. Not sure, but definitely the first ones I ever saw that advertised it on the box (15 years ago when I first saw it, probably goes back way further than that though).

Yeah this is actually my friend Jeff's but I'll tell you I don't think I've ever picked up a breed love that I didn't like a lot.

    Extra Notes:
-The percieved loss of brilliance between the brand new strings and the 8 month old barely used strings was greater in the video than in the room. It might have even been greater in the video playing back from UA-cam than the original video file on my computer (youtube ‘compression’?)
-I learned so much about my guitars by doing this, I’ve never sat down and played them back to back to this extent before
-When my older daughter watched the video and saw that her baby sister got to ride the wagon without her, she was enraged

I play whatever I have or whatever phosphor bronze I can get.
Nice to see a fairly methodical test however changing guitars is a big problem for A/B comparison of strings alone based on sound.
I may be wrong but dull/dirty strings always seemed to have less “duration” or “presence” than the same string new on the same guitar. Maybe just due to dirt as you mentioned or due to wear / breakdown of windings as they are played? Again not sure. Even as I type these comments a lot of untested and possibly difficult-to-test variables come to mind.

      @BillySoundFarm  Рік тому

Yes you're correct we're trying to listen for brilliance (what you called "presence" I think) because other elements of the tone could change based on the guitar. According to Stringjoy, oils and dirt from our hands get in between the windings and then live between the winding and the core, and causes the core to corrode. If they're correct, we should see way more of a difference in the deterioration of wound strings than plain strings, if we weren't wiping them.

I bought an all laminate dreadnought and did as you mentioned, I did a tapered scallop job on the sound board bracing and shellac'd the whole interior of the sound box... interior.
I tried Elixir and DiAddario's and Martin Phosphor Bronze...meh.
Then i strung it up with StringJoy Foxwoods and man, did that tone come alive. I have the FSTA Yamaha with a solid spruce top and mahogany laminate back and sides with the same StringJoy strings and it doesnt have the roar or projection of that laminate F325D. Not even close.
I'm tempted to shellac the inside of my FSTA , But there are areas i cannot reach because of internal wiring and electronics.
Love your stuff on here... a fellow experimenter on guitar.
Btw, StringJoy electric strings are great as well. Coated nickel .11 - .53 played thru a Mustang LT25 rewired to a Crate HX80 cab speaker Celestion G12k 12" and man, does that sound great with my Tele on SuperClean with a CloudBurst with a pinch of room reverb. I play the FSTA thru it too and it sounds acoustic, and not that piezo nastiness. All of this is for HomeStudio use. And I mic my natural tone Acoustic work... always. No reverb.
Great stuff on here, Sir. I just found your channel today. Thanks !

Thanks! ... I've tried all three of the stringjoy electric strings (orbiters like you mentioned, signatures, and Broadways which are pure nickel). They're far and away the highest quality strings I've ever used on electric guitar. But the interesting thing is that they're still not the right strings for some of my guitars, they have so much character that if 'the thing' of that string isn't what I'm going for there's no way to dial it out because it drips with its 'thing'. It's hard to explain, actually.
... For instance, when I used to the Broadways are my Stratocaster, there was no way in the world to make this thing sound like anything but a Stratocaster. But I just so happened that that particular stratocaster was something that I used and a context where I wanted it to sound a little more like my Les Paul. I thought I didn't like it and now that it's gone i actually miss it, I think I'm going to go back to them and just embrace the strat 😂
... The string sounded so good, one time I accidentally turned off my amp modeler so I was playing just direct with drives here and there and reverbs and delays... The front house guy noticed my dip in level and just turned my gain up at the board to compensate. I didn't realize until the set was over, and I was horrified because I thought I really loved the sound, so I asked the drummer and he said the sound was really great too. Can't make this stuff up lol

@@BillySoundFarm You are correct about Orbiters. They play well on my Tele. However, I cutout an 1/4" groove in the neck pkup cover, removing some brass and allow the pkup to breathe. And then lower the pickup that changes the tone quite a bit. A lot lower at the high E to balance equal volume but a bit lower still. Alnico5's are bright and that tone can be a bit shrill. Then I raise or lower the bridge pkup to balance the volume between both. Less at the bridge for the perfect tone crunch clean. I just connected to the Celestion 2 days ago. I'm blown away. That Fender 8" speaker is anemic, at best. I traded my strat because it was just tooo heavy. I kinda miss it. But, my Tele can be dialed in to sound stratty. haha I traded it for a Cloudburst. Heavenly tone for days. The SuperClean amp tone in this Mustang LT25 is clean clean, NO hiss or 60 cycle hum from my single coils. Oh, the combo of both pkups sound like a humbucker. My favorite. Growl and crunch with just a pinch of gain. Marvelous tone.
      Thanks for sharing, Billy

Changing my strings after six weeks of play is optimal for my guitars tone. As age and career exposre to loud noise , i have noticed the new strings give clarity to the old ears. But i do play strings with heavy picking effort just to be able to hear . Wiping after playing everytime.
