Vin used to frequent the Gelson's supermarket in Pacific Palisades. I used to work as a box boy there in high school and college. When I'd hear Vin say hello to the check out clerk, I'd sprint to the station for an opportunity to bag his groceries and shoot the breeze with him. Every time he'd ask me to help him and his wife carry out the groceries, and he'd throw me a twenty. This man is pure class.
Great speech by Mr Scully during the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction in 1982. Can you believe that he passed on the 40th anniversary of him receiving the Ford C. Frick Award? I guessed it came full circle. Thank you for the memories and stories. Rest easy sir.
I can't believe this was 30 years ago; I remember this like it was yesterday. Vin is so eloquent and poetic--I had tears in my eyes watching this. He is truly a treasure.
There will never, EVER be another Vin Scully. You couldn't put all the words in the dictionary to describe what type of person Vin is. An absolute treat.
what a fine humble man vin Scully is, he truly is the best ever in the history of this great all American sport and so we also ask our selves; out of all the baseball teams that would have been proud to have him as their commentator; why us? God bless him and his family always.
Cool Man!!! You lucked out. Not only did you get a great tip, but you got to talk to Vin Scully in person. Man, I wish it would have been me. Vin is a classy guy.
Ever so humble, I do not believe Vin would want anything more than to be mentioned amongst his peers, the other Ford Frick Award recipients and to have his photo and bio left forever in the "Scribes and Mikemen" exhibit of Cooperstown with those of whom have documented this game, which has given them so much.
Thanks a bunch for sharing this with us. You'd think this would be on the Dodgers website or the mlb website and easily found but it is not. The best play by play man ever.
Vin Scully isn't in the Hall of Fame. He is a recipient of the Ford Frick Award which is presented by the Hall of Fame. However if any broadcaster deserves to be a true HOF member--it's Vin Scully. He is the greatest broadcaster of all time. Period.
Read my first post again. No, he's not. No broadcaster is. What you are seeing in this clip is the closest a broadcaster can get to being enshrined in the HOF. He is receiving the 1982 Ford Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting as stated in the caption that appears at 3:58 of this video. Vin Scully has no plaque in the Hall of Fame.
@@Lava1964 I don't get that.....why shouldn't the broadcasters get a wing? They offer as much on their own as the players do. Doesn't seem right that they don't have one.

Oh, yeah. He came up with the most memorable calls in baseball history. It's hard to believe he's retired after such a long career in broadcasting, especially for the Dodgers.

I went to my first baseball game this year and heard this guy's voice in the stands (a fan had a radio going). I didn't know who it was but I was impressed at their broadcasting skills. I later found out who it was and I feel privileged to experience my first MLB game listening to him. He's truly the Murray Walker of baseball. 67 years non-stop with one team, no-one will ever do that again.
I miss your voice, stories, professionalism and class Vince. I wish you could have called Justin's Tuners walk off Home run against the Cubs. Baseball misses you....😐
There will never be another Vincent Edward Scully 🎙💙💖💔

The guy gets inducted into the baseball Hall Of Fame 34 years ago...and is still working today! Crazy.

I never heard anyone tell a story better than Vin Scully, in all my life.
There will never, EVER be another Vin Scully. You couldn't put all the words in the dictionary to describe what type of person Vin is. An absolute treat.
Thank you so much for posting this! As wonderful a broadcaster as Mr. Scully is, he's an even finer human being.

The GREATEST of all time! Plain n simple
This man is in a league of his own!⚾
I just can't see another announcer better than Vin Scully. He's the heartbeat of Southern California
+5000na he's the heartbeat of America, and ideally the world.
Thanks for posting this--and to think that, 30 years later, he's still at it and still tremendous.
LIVING LEGEND
Simply the best
What a great person.
Vin scully became a broadcaster the same year my great grand mother was born

Vin broadcast 32 years for the Dodgers before that speech and another 32 years and counting after that speech.
32 before, 35 after
I just want to hear Vin Scully call a World Series championship win for the Dodgers one last time.
Thanks a bunch for sharing this with us. You'd think this would be on the Dodgers website or the mlb website and easily found but it is not. The best play by play man ever.
Giants fan here - but love Tommy. Those 70's Dodgers Teams were some of best ever.

So eloquent.
"ITS TIME FOR DODGERS BASEBALL!"
Funny thing... Ralph Kiner is in the HOF as a player, but is far more famous as a Mets broadcaster.

Vinnie! Enough said.
His wife was a beauty.
First Class
Tha man
Who gave this a thumbs down?
And this was before his call of the Gibson home run, right? I am so jealous of Dodgers fans to have this guy calling your radio games.
Some of my oldest memories are of my dad taking us to a park close to the stadium, eating and listening to Vin Scully and Ross Porter on 790 KABC.

They need to put up Some shade for the audience as well. It gets Hot out there
Came up on my recommended just days after his passing
Why me?
He killed his first wife. An unreal terror
She died from ALS
@@DiscipleGabe his first wife not his second. Vinny killed her. He buried both wives and his first wife was 38
I was 4 in 84
