Really great explanation. I do have a question, I just got a raid 1 installed, but thinking a raid 5 would be better. What kind of RAID controller card would you recommend? I found several LSI cards on Amazon and they are having their October sale soon. I have a single drive 1 TB just for the operating system and 2 drives mirrored for a raid 1 and one spare 4 TB drive. Would you recommend putting the operating system all together or keeping separate. Its taken me over 6 months to put this together. I have a asus P8B75-M mother board with a 3770K cpu. People said it would never work on windows 10, but it does. Windows 11 is a whole different story. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been looking for an explanation all day that I would understand on this topic. You will be getting a subscribe from me as I take flight in my Tech journey.
1:56 This is incorrect. The max amount of partitions is dependent on the partition table type. The old MBR is only 4 max yes, but GPT can do up to 128 partitions on a basic disk in Windows. The "basic disks can only have up to 4 partitions" is a myth that used to be true.
Dynamic disks have been deprecated from Windows and Microsoft does not recommend using them anymore. Microsoft recommends using basic disks or using the newer Storage Spaces technology when you want to pool disks together into larger volumes. The Dynamic Disks feature is no longer being developed and will be fully replaced by Storage Spaces in a future release. Also, every time you want to use a dynamic disk on a new computer, or even if you just remove and put it back in, you will have to manually import the dynamic disk. Changing a dynamic disk back to a basic disk requires the dynamic disk data to be deleted. And one last thing, MBR = 4 primary partitions while GPT = 128 partitions. MBR should not be used for a new disk.

...and MS still (Windows 10, 22H2) sets MBR as a default selection in the dialog of a partition table creation for a new disk drive! So it must be ok when he's highlighting MBR "limitations", but there's no mention that this dynamic shit is going to be attached to a single OS.
@@user-li8rm3qj4b me too, I converted my gaming hard drive where I have all my games stored into a dynamic disk and now I have two partitions that have merged into one and I just want one complete partition. Also, Linux can't read dynamic disks. 😢
I converted my 2 TB storage disk to dynamic as it felt easier to recover space from less used partitions and add it up to my games storage partition. I noticed the disk began with an 100+ Gb as a reserved partition. It still has less than 300 Mb used, but I managed to reduce it to 4 GB. Now, if this partition houses the database that translates dynamic addressing to the physical disk underneath, then probably this database will become larger and larger, threatening at some point to hit take all the space available ?
I have a question, my gaming hard drive is a gpt dynamic disk with a small 500mb partition and the rest of the 4tb drive is on another partition. Am I able to delete the small 500mb partition without losing data? It's hard to tell since dynamic disks merge multiple volumes on one disk, I just want to have one big partition and maybe later on convert the disk back to a basic disk since Linux can't read dynamic disks.
He said, "Basic disk support's multi boot environment in a computer" ! By that.... Does he mean dual booting partisan frm the same hdd/ssd?? or frm 2 or more separated drives as different boot d's in a computer. Because.... I'w looking to set up a dual booting of Windows10 & Ubuntu in a m/c containing 3 drives.... So should i keep the 2 boot drives fr Win & Ubu(secondary) as Basic drives and the storage as Dynamic drive or do I've to config all 3 of them as Basic drives? Coz i was thinking, i would convert all the drives to Dynamic drives and use 2 fr dual booting operating systems and 1 fr storage and marge the extra space of the 2nd optional boot drive with the storage drive. Can't i?
hello, i mainly do gaiming im my pc. i accidentally comverted my main drive with windows on it, into a dynamic drive. will i notice any issues? or will i have to get it fixed by a professional. thanks
I too converted my laptop's SSD and HDD to dynamic from basic by mistake. From the information i gathered after searching the web, to convert back to basic from dynamic, you have to formate everything and create new volumes. If you are not into dualbooting your PC and just want to play games, I guess you can leave as it is.

TLDR.: Installing OS -> simple disc
data storage/gaming/ work files/etc. -> Dynamic disc.

Dynamic disks don't support TRIM.
If you have a software RAID on Windows with SSD's, you can't TRIM them.
They will slow down as time fly by.
TRIM doesn't allow you to recover data from your disk. So not sure I prefer speed over data recovery.
@@christiangrey6258 There are Storage Spaces on Windows. Supports both TRIM and data recovery.
so. its all just RAID 0, 1, 10, 5?
