Locking tuners are not for tuning stability. They’re for fast string changes. They do have the added advantage/side effect of less wraps + locking helps on a non locking nut guitar, but string changing is always a godsend on a guitar with locking tuners.
I own the ESP E2 Horizon NT2 in see thru black sunburst (same one in the video except with a TOM bridge). It is LITERALLY the nicest guitar I have ever held in my hand's. Anybody I show it to that know's nothing about guitar instantly realizes that this is an expensive instrument.
The 2021 versions have a satin finished neck on the Horizon models...but I own a 2019 Horizon NT2 (the same exact black sunburst one in the video, except mine is a TOM) and the neck is gloss. So if you are looking for a satin finished neck make sure it's a 2021 model.
My wife bought me the ESP E-II Horizon FR-II Tiger Eye for Christmas last year. I have not stopped playing it since. It sounds absolutely awesome through my JVM 410 on the OD1 channel. Pickups are strong but not too pushy. Feels beautiful in the hands; just the right weight; easy to play. Stays in tune very well. Looks stunning in the flesh. Seen as a 'metal' oriented guitar but I would honestly use it for anything because it sounds so great and is so pleasurable to play physically. It even smells lovely!
Great stuff! The Horizon series are definitely built for comfort. Plenty of tonal flexibility when you combine the pickup settings with the variations that can be achieved via the volume pot!
Just wish they had an arm scoop/bevel where your arm rests on the guitar. It's be more comfortable that way, at least for me personally. It's my biggest pet peeve when a guitar doesn't have that.
I had an old logo ESP horizon NT-II for 7 years. remember buying it new for 1800 with free shipping. they go for 3k aud nowadays ... unbeatable guitar for the price, Its a shame that ESP started putting E-II logo on their guitars.
Look at Pete doing a little shredding during that intro! Haha nice! I've always really liked the shape of the Horizon-III with the elongated top horn. It's basically a Yamaha/Ibanez bass body but with an electric guitar neck and electric guitar hardware
While you’re right in a sense, locking tuners do help with tuning stability but of course nowhere near what a locking nut will do. Since you don’t have to wrap the strings around the post this helps tuning stability since the string can’t bind onto itself around the post.
i see locking tuners w locking nuts often. I think its great guitar companies are starting to do this more. All mine have been changed out to have locking tuners... I get so many people saying its so crazy and redundant, but it's not true.. not only is it nice knowing you're really locked in, cause sometimes the locking nut doesn't always fully lock, but string changes are so quick and easy. That alone is worth the extra money for me. no more winding strings and unwinding strings..
Just a quick aside the EMG's aren't a coil tap really it's 3 coils 2 for hum mode and the other is a single coil below the hum coils being switched on. The more ya know!
I have two 2010 made in Japan Horizons and feel blessed everyday to play them . If you have the funds and want to try a superbly made guitar, look no further . I bought a PRS Studio a year after buying the girls, for $1500 more . I hardly ever picked it up, and sold it at a loss as I had fallen on hard times and needed rent money . Peace all.
Is there any difference in comfort of play between the Horizon amd Horizon III? I personally prefer the look of the Horizon but am curious if the III-variation exists to feel different, or if it is just an aesthetic difference.
I have a lovely LTD H1001FR Deluxe (the burl top one). It is an excellent guitar, love it to bits. If I ever had the chance to suggest something to ESP (and co) I would tell them to move the volume knobs just a further out and back from where they place it (terrible on the ESPs/E-IIs, not so bad on the LTDs, though it can still get in the way of the picking hand) and also bring the pickup selector forward, kinda between the two pups. A flatter (or even compound) radius might also be interesting, even though the 12" is very comfortable, even for shredding.
I've sanded and re finished quite a few necks with Tru-oil, but I'm scared to do it to my nice guitars... I've never really been sure it doesn't cause neck issues. I've only done it cheap guitars that I beat up anyway.
