"There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?" Love the edit awesome job! The story of the scorpion and the frog, a scorpion is trying to cross a river and asks a frog if he can ride across on his back. While the frog is thinking about his answer the scorpion assures him that he will not sting him so the frog agrees. As the two are in the middle of the river the scorpion stings the frog putting them both in trouble. The frog asks the scorpion why? The scorpion responds it is my nature. “ Your boy Nino didn’t make it across the river.”

Flat out one of the greatest movies of the 2010's. Gosling's character is a great inversion of the hero trope. He's basically a homicidal sociopath, but he's thrust into a situation where he is compelled to be a "hero" because of his emotional connection to Irene and her son. The irony of the scene where he kills Nino with the mask on is that his character is "mask off" there. Great subversive art film.

Y'all need to watch Nicolas Winding Refn's ''Pusher'' trilogy (especially ''Pusher II'', with Mads Mikkelsen, who has actually a supporting role in the first movie), ''Bronson'' (with Tom Hardy), ''Valhalla Rising'' (again with Mads Mikkelsen) and ''Only God Forgives'' (also with Ryan Gosling). Talkin' 'bout Ryan Gosling, y'all need to watch ''Half Nelson'', ''Lars and the Real Girl'' and especially in the underrated and imo the masterpiece ''The Place Beyond the Pines''. I have a theory and I don’t mean to be disrespectful but I think Ryan Gosling character might be autistic hence why he is not very social and he is always silent. Plus he is good at driving and other violent things lol

As someone on spectrum, there are a lot of markers here - violence aside(a little..), but the routine rules quietness social interaction protecting what's important.. It /strongly/ resonates.

"Watch Ryan Gosling being a mute while driving a car" doesn't sound great at first glance but Nicolas Winding Refn makes it compelling, it's an insanely well-shot movie and the soundtrack really carries it as well. And then I guess Denis Villeneuve watched this and was like "I want to make another movie where Ryan Gosling barely speaks and stares at people moodily" and we got Blade Runner 2049. I guess Ryan Gosling is just good at being a weirdo silent cool guy.

  • @srenjrgensen1468

The great amount of silence makes the brutal violence so much more powerful.

It's fucking incredible to me that people your age are discovering Ryan Gosling because of Barbie. Did you know that this actor has 3 Oscar nominations, and six Golden Globe nominations (and won one for La La Land). Can you go see The nice Guys, Crazy Stupid Love, Half Nelson, Blade Runner, Blue Valentine... and surrender to the wonderful actor in front of you and you don't know how to appreciate?
Even in Barbie he stole the movie

this is my all time fave movie. you have to be into more noir style directors who make the decision to, for instance, cut the constant yapping and random chatter, and instead allow those silences be expressed through emotions we can project ourselves onto.. they are meant to be points of immersion into the characters and i think its quite beautiful. Gosling himself asked for this specific director b/c of that feeling he wanted to create in the movie. i think it's a movie best watched alone to truly "feel it".. b/c the silences to feel awkward when with someone like you almost feel like you have fill in with words.. but thats just not how its meant to be watched. if you watched it alone, you wouldn't have anyone to make comments to and instead sit with it quietly and feel the movie more. but thats just my opinion.
Also, i hate the whole alpha male concept, but most people consider this character to be the epitome of what it means to be Sigma. someone strong, empathetic, competent, humble, and willing to do the right thing even if it means losing a woman he loves.
fun facts: since you mentioned the scorpion jacket. the entire movie and his jacket, the scorpion, is an allegory to the old story of "the scorpion and the frog'.. where a scorpion begs and pleads and promises a frog he wont sting him if he does him the favor of crossing him across the river.. just for the scorpion to sting him half way and claiming "it's just in his nature".. the entire movie Gosling is the Frog carrying dangerous scorpions, as shown by his jacket. he even brings it up after Ninos death on the phone with Bernie, where he says "You know the story about the scorpion and the frog? Your friend Nino didn't make it across the river.."
another interesting trivia, Ninos death is the only death shown from a distance b.c they had to change filiming due to an accident Perlman had when they first began shooting the scene. a huge wave hits him, and he breaks his knee on a rock.. so they weren't able to take any more footage of them closeup afterwards. the scene shown in the movie is the same footage where he broke his knee b/c they only managed to take the one footage.

Great movie, I've always assumed Ryan's character personality was a defense mechanism to keep people from getting close...obviously has a checkered past, plus Bryan Cranston mentioning that he just wandered in his shop some years ago, indicating he wasn't from the area at least that's how I perceived it🤷‍♂️

The song at 39:40 was made for a 70s Italian movie called Goodbye Uncle Tom (though it also goes by other names). It is... it's some other shit. It's a pseudo-documentary about a group of Italian filmmakers who inexplicably time travel to the south in the US during slavery to document it all. It's just fucking insane, really. The director of Drive saw the movie and decided to use the song. If you're ever in the mood for a shocking midnight movie, well, you won't soon forget it is all I can say.
You can find it here on UA-cam but the quality is shit, not that it really matters that much.

I get your feeling about the first part of the movie being a slow burn and no real action, but in order for the action that comes later to mean anything you needed to know that the Driver had a stake in helping Standard. You needed to know he cared for that family and wanted it all to be resolved without anyone getting hurt or killed. Without that back story it wouldn't mean anything to the viewer.
