I think the sewer king still has an important lesson behind it. That not everyone can be redeemed or "saved". Although rare there are genuinely terrible and dangerous people out there. And that's important for kids to be aware of. Sort of like stranger danger.
Excellent point! Getting strong "Gollum" vibes, this closely resembles and must have inspired this character- living underground in dark solitude, obsessing over a prize item and wasting away over it, going insane when it is taken away. When reading the Hobbit, (before the movie came out), this fascinated me as one of the most chilling and tragic existences imaginable.
The side characters in this show had some amazing one liners. This show and ed edd and eddy made me wanna live in that neighborhood because of the kids alone
I JUST said this to myself 10 min ago when I was watching the ‘Save the Tree’ episode. Stinky was like “It’s Big Bob!” and Sid finished with, “and…some other guy!” Love it 😂
I think Sewer King teaches the lesson that terrible people often live very sad, miserable lives, and something that meant SO much to him (i.e. the watch) was meaningless to Arnold's grandpa. In the end, the Sewer King thought that he had won, but in reality, he didn't gain anything that Arnold's grandpa didn't already have, and his obsession with something so worthless proved how pathetic of a person he is. There are a *lot* of people out there like that.
The elephant man story is heartbreaking…he died because he wanted to sleep like everyone else on his back, which caused him to choke due to the weight and bulk of his head…tragic.
The “Wheezin’ Ed” episode always scared me the most, especially the ending where you hear his raspy cackle coming from the caves entrance confirming he still haunts the place. There were so many clever and suspenseful episodes of Hey Arnold that a lot of kids shows didn’t always have. Thanks for the nostalgic revisit!
Let me tell you, I thought for a long time that the haunted train one was something I dreamed as a kid. Until one day I mentioned it to a friend and he was like 👀 "that's an Arnold episode" Anyway, I still think about it whenever I'm on the subway late at night.
I am truly grateful for this show, and for the people who made it. And to Craig Bartlet, the creator of the show, my sincerest gratitude for showing the world that despite how bad things (and people) may be at times, there is always an Arnold out there willing to make a difference. Thank you for being that "Arnold", Mr. Bartlet; it means more to me than words can describe.
@@slystone4892 I felt like Helga's love for Arnold, Arnold's kindness and the whole cat's wacky adventures were. Also not talking down to kids and it golds up well.
The Zeke the Plumber episode of Salute Your Shorts always scared me. As kids we'd rather die than have our secrets be revealed and be humiliated in front of everyone we know. In that sense it has the viewer use their own imagination to think "What would my encounter with Zeke be like? What would the people around me think of me after he tells them my secrets?" It's the kind of horror that is made scarier by the viewer than the creator could ever accomplish.
As good and spooky as these episodes are, there’s one that truly scared me. And that’s “part time friends”. Being 10 years old and seeing that part when grandpas jaw fell off was truly horrifying.
I think you missed the point on the sewer guy. He serves as an important lesson to kids, still. Not everyone can be changed through empathy and you won't always win. It's realistic, even if you consider the whole living in sewers situation. People actually live in sewers you know.
I really enjoyed your retrospective on Hey Arnold and it is wonderful how Arnold shows his kindness to everyone even the urban legends. I think the Ghost Bride might have been the most enjoyable but I concur that Monkey Business unnerved me as well because it shows how sometimes our brains can make us believe we're diseased when we're not.
This was the freshest breath of fresh air! Hey Arnold has always been amongst one of my favorite cartoons. And your brilliant explanation of the show helped me understand why. Thank you for that.
Bartletts attention to detail is something else. Grandpas packard is extremely detailed for being a cartoon, engine 25 is based off a real life Norfolk and Western locomotive. Even the city itself. The city is a fictional city in Washington but Bartlett said it’s based on Brooklyn NY and coming from someone who worked in Brooklyn he absolutely nailed it. Everything from the brownstone homes to the cobblestone roads by the parks.
Great analysis! I've been rediscovering 'Hey Arnold' this last year for the first time in over twenty years. Love it! The spooky episodes are some of the best.
Ah yes, the urban legend episodes were also my favorite. Four Eyed Jack was my favorite with how the borders roam around the bording house late at night looking for the ghost
Hey Arnold will always be one of my favorite animated shows of all time, it premiered in 1996 when I was 7 years old, and now watching these episodes as an adult has made me resonate even more with this series.
Scariest arnold moment? Jaw falls off. Y'all know what I'm talking about. Also, fun fact: in spanish, "mono" means 'monkey'. And the actual name of the disease is "mononucleosis". So that was one hell of a pun for spanish speaking viewers.
The haunted train episode hit me so hard as a kid because I lived less than a mile from an active train track in the outskirts. Hearing the train horn overnight sent chills down my spine the first night after I saw that episode.
The "fake news story" thing actually happened here in Ireland. Me and my father were visiting his mother's house, and a news broadcast came on saying that a nuclear power planet in the UK had a meltdown and that we had to stay inside because we were in the affected area. We were really scared, and then at the end, it said it was just an imagined scenario of what the broadcast would be like if it really happened.
"What kind of show would kids want to watch? One where they meet up on the street at 12am and have adventures and the adults don't even know what they're doing? Real life isn't like that. It's aspirational" *Me learning my childhood was apparently aspirational*
I always thought Sewer King got the watch back because it was the only thing he had of actual value. In the end, he is left with no company (again), no friends, king of the shittiest kingdom ever, and the only thing he actually wanted was more meaningful to him than for Grandpa (who turns out had a lot of them). So it was like, a watch can be just another watch or it could mean the world to an isolated dispossessed man whose coping mechanism to deal with loneliness and isolation by pretending to be a king hahah Loved the video btw! Arnold was my fav show growing up (I still watch a few episodes when I can fall asleep ☺️).
Man, this video takes me way back. Such great times that this show added to. I personally always loved the Four Eyed Jack episode but hey it doesn’t have to be everyone’s favorite. When Hey Arnold wanted to do spooky, they did it right!
Its crazy how they NEVER played hey arnolds halloween episode!!! 🎃 it was such a quality, dark episode. Love you guys!!! I miss the 90's. Currently 27 ^-^ 😀
I literally just found out that episode existed. I never saw it even once. I live in latin america, so I don't know if there's a reason it never aired here.
They are great episodes full of mistery. Funny how they always seem to have a closed ending, but at the very last it turns out it really was true. It happens with not just these spooky episodes but with most of the series episodes.
Headless Horseman was the best. The Bride (I completely forgot about that one!!) And the one where they find the daughter of the Asian Tenant- there will never be another
love the heart, music artwork and most importantly arnold's amazing bedroom!! this show was truly a dream, so kindly and gentle compared to most other cartoons.
Happy anniversary to Hey Arnold! A cult classic that has played a huge role in our childhood, and will foever be etch into our hearts. Love the video btw!
My favorite is the headless Cabbie. Hey arnold is one of my favorite TV shows. Great episodes. exploring the adventures, the vastness of the world, and interesting characters throughout.
I just found you Quality Cure. I love this! I was in 4th grade when Hey Arnold! Came out. The same grade as the cartoon. It impacted me in a good way. Props homie
I love the Haunted Train episode so much that I think that's the one I've watched the most. I totally forgot about the Ghost Bride! Will have to rewatch that one!
I remember one episode where Arnold's friends stay over night at Arnold's apartment and Jerald tells a story of a ghost who has lost his glasses, and tries to get them back. And eventually Arnold has the glasses and looks after the glasses for the ghost
I used to always sleepover at my nana’s and every time I’d wake up before 7 am when this would be streaming. I never realised how much this show was built into a bit of my childhood
I loved this show as a kid! But the scariest thing I remember from it is a dream sequence from an episode where Gerald and Arnold had a fight, which ends in Grandpa's taunting Arnold and his mandible coming off.
OMG replying because I'm so glad someone was traumatized by this other than me lol. That was the creepiest thing and I always had to cover my eyes when the episode aired.
One time I was asleep as a kid and my blankets were pulled down from me. I don’t have and brothers or sisters. So eyed Jack episode still freaks me out. “Never eat raspberry’s”
I really thought the Headless Cabbie episode was a fever dream I had as a kid. I just had vague spooky memories of it until I watched this video. Funnily enough, the strongest memory I have of that episode is the little Scottie dog appearing out of the fog.
the first 22 seconds of this vid are my sentiments EXACTLY! one that occasionally kept me up at night was the 4 eyed Jack episode because I used to think that my house was haunted 😅
Phoebe was a smart girl. She wouldn't have used a well known poem. Unless you were a huge Emily Dickenson fan you most likely wouldn't know every single poem in her archive. Not to mention this takes place 20 years ago when you'd have go and read every Emily Dickenson book to verify it was copied. You couldn't just Google a line and find out if it's out there. It makes much more sense when you remember this was in the 90s.
I rewatch all these episode around halloween every year. As well as the thanksgiving and christmas episodes in november and december. This christmas one really hits harder nowadays.
Don't forget that Maurice LaMarche also did the voice of Egon Spengler in "The Real Ghostbusters" and "Extreme Ghostbusters", both of which also had some surprisingly creepy episodes worth mentioning. ;)
Chocolate boy being reduced to performing for chocolate at the whims of bullies and Arnold finding out what the chocolate meant to him in his past to get over his obsession with it was a good episode too. Sort of the same blueprint as the humans behind urban legends episodes.

“”Rare”” hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. What planet do you live on?? They are the majority of people
I love when grandpa is telling the ghost story, then he nonchalantly is like "You know, the one next to the tire shop out there.."
Sid's "and some other guy!" gag is always so funny. Gonna have to binge again
Lol. In the Spanish version he says "and some other ugly guy"
"Ahhhhh! It's Wheezin' Ed! And some other guy!!" lmao
The side characters in this show had some amazing one liners. This show and ed edd and eddy made me wanna live in that neighborhood because of the kids alone
This one and Curly calling everyone to free the animals at the zoo were my favorite side character moments of the series.
I JUST said this to myself 10 min ago when I was watching the ‘Save the Tree’ episode. Stinky was like “It’s Big Bob!” and Sid finished with, “and…some other guy!” Love it 😂

NGL, Pigeon Man still makes me cry because I could relate to him so much.
pigeon man means a lot more now that i’m older. it was very deep for a kids cartoon.

Ahaha interesting how specially as a kid the line between reality and fiction it’s kind of a blurred one.
As a kid I was terrified the mad conductor was going to find me somehow in real life

These types of episodes are what truly make Hey Arnold so special.
Love them wholeheartedly but Hey Arnold still would be great without them.

"I just wanted to sell them a quality watch" - creepy guy at the end of the tunnel in the middle of the night for some reason
As good and spooky as these episodes are, there’s one that truly scared me. And that’s “part time friends”. Being 10 years old and seeing that part when grandpas jaw fell off was truly horrifying.
Forgot all about that! That really was terrifying 😂
Me tooooo 😭
The Wheezin' Ed episode freaked me out the most back when I watched the first couple of seasons. The art for the backstory really creeped me out.
The art is great! They effectively made static illustrations super creepy, especially because of the accompanying music / sound design

Ok that was your point all along: the empathy Hey Arnold always showed with every single character.
Still remember that ghost train episode, and to this day I still say that the ending blues song was amazing
I just want you all to know that this video made my day a lot better and also a little wistful.
Aw I’m glad 😊
“Why must i be cursed with such an inquisitive nature” 🤣

this channel is vastly underrated. love the revisit to my childhood (& the scary bits that stayed w me through all these years!)

The statue of Phoebe cheats scared me so much as a child, the fact that the statue talks, looks scary and the voice.
The one where Sid thinks Stinky is a Vampire is one of our favorites and a good one too. :)
I've often thought that kid's horror isn't nearly as good as it used to be.
