    he Secret Service follows the adventures of Father Stanley Unwin, the parish priest of a rural English village. Affecting the appearance of an eccentric middle-aged vicar, Unwin moonlights as a secret agent for BISHOP (an acronym of "British Intelligence Service Headquarters, Operation Priest"), a top-secret division of British Intelligence based in Whitehall. He answers to his London-based superior, "The Bishop". Unwin is stationed at his vicarage with Matthew Harding, another agent, who-when not assisting the Father on missions-adopts the manner of a simple gardener and verger. Supporting characters include Blake, a junior BISHOP operative, and Mrs Appleby, the Father's ageing housekeeper, who is unaware of Unwin and Harding's involvement with British Intelligence.
    Filming commenced at Century 21 Studios in Slough and on location in August 1968. Production ceased in January 1969 with the completion of the thirteenth episode after Lew Grade, the Andersons' financial backer, responded negatively to a test screening of the pilot episode in the previous December, fearing that successful distribution in the United States would be impossible with the inclusion of the nonsensical "Unwinese" dialogue. Critical reception to The Secret Service remains mixed: when compared to the Andersons' previous series, verdicts range from "the forgotten gem" to "the one flop". Commentators have questioned the wisdom of hiring Unwin as a voice actor, suggesting that the potential for comedy provided by his Unwinese is too weak to sustain interest; however, the writing of the supporting characters has been praised.

    Have you seen this brilliantly quirky series? Did you like it? What's your favourite thing about it? It's definitely worth investigating if it's new to you!

      I have and it is wonderful.
      With Shout! having a deal with ITV, they REALLY need to bring this series back to DVD in the States (with the remastered transfers for the first and last episodes).
      Speaking of, this would've been perfect to air on a Christian network like EWTN.

    Binged the whole of the series over the last two days, it's certainly different but that makes a nice contrast to the more futuristic, hi-tech Anderson series.

    Greetings from America! Unfortunately, I have never heard of this show, but then again, not every Gerry Anderson series, save for Thunderbirds, was released in the U.S. Irrelevant to this, but I remember watching Thunderbirds on television when I was a little tyke. It was pretty amazing. Now that I'm a little older, pushing 30 in fact(!), I have even more appreciation for it. As well as other Gerry Anderson Supermarionation series like Stingray, Fireball XL5, and Captain Scarlet. I have all of the aforementioned shows on DVD. I'm hoping that someone, somewhere, can release UFO on DVD in the United States, because even though I've only seen a few episodes of it, I think it's one of Gerry Anderson's best. Anyway, that's my blurb. Greetings from America!

    • @spacezoomer
      @spacezoomer 4 роки тому

      @Critic Kids Yeah, I know. I'm just saying, as far as I am aware, at least, that no other Gerry Anderson series, apart from Thunderbirds, was broadcast on American television. I know that they are bug hits in their native UK and also Japan, but not as much in America. They're more of a cult favorite. Most British properties are cult favorites in America, from what I've seen. Like Doctor Who. Or Monty Python. I love those shows, of course, but not everyone else does.

      @@68jroche I haven't seen Jo 90. I've been meaning to since it is also on DVD in the United States. I think it is still available. I'd have to check.

    The Mike Sammes singers were most famous for singing the "up your jumper" refrain from The Beatles classic "Iam the Walrus" They also supplied the wonderful songs from "The Selfish Giant" cartoon.

    I like the intro of The Secret Service, and I`ve got the complete series now on DVD by Network DVD, and the theme tune is performed by The Mike Sammes Singers [originally intended by the Swingle Singers, and according to Wikipedia, their prospective fee was too high for the music budget] and this theme tune by Barry Gray developed the initial concept into a three part fugue in the style of Bach [my favourite composer] and it`s a great piece for me.

      Yes, Lew Grade didn't give the show much of a chance and ordered it cancelled after just 13 episodes. Then next up was UFO where Gerry Anderson was able to switch to live action, which he'd been wanting to do all along.

    Never saw this when it aired even though ATV Midlands did show it. Might have been too old at 10 years - lol.
    This was the series where they had hoped to use The Swingle Singers but couldn't afford them - so used Mikes Sammer Singers (previously used for 'Supercar').

    I like the way that Gerry Anderson used more real landscape and natural decor for this serie and a little less miniature. Derek Medding model was used extensively in the earlier series, but in this one, they used the natural decor a little more.

    From what I’ve seen on UA-cam (only two episodes) , I thoroughly enjoyed.
    Love the quirky English eccentricity of it. Makes me feel homesick.
