A lot of the enjoyment in Skylanders is derived from the gimmick of taking real life toys and putting them into the game. That's what always felt like magic to me as a kid. Putting the Skylander on the portal and seeing the character show up in the game was amazing to me as a kid. What's cool about buying a character from an in-game store? That's not any more magical feeling than buying a skin in Fortnite.
