  • Caving Vlog #60
    During a visit to Europe to attend a polymer conference I had a few days to tour some areas of Holland, Germany and Belgium. While in Belgium I stayed with Paul de Bie and his wife Annette, members of Speleoclub Avalon based in Antwerp. They showed me a couple of the thousands of amazing caves in the Wallonia region of southern Belgium.

      Hi Paul. I did make it to the airport in time, but my flight was cancelled due to weather. I'm back home now though. Thanks again for the amazing hospitality.

      You're welcome! BTW congrats because you didn't make any typo at all in the names of places, caves and people. You did a lot better than the average Belgian caver :-)

    Is there any distinct difference between European caves and American caves? Also how do their caving communities compare to American caving communities? Another amazing video!

      Every cave and cave region has its own character. Belgian caves don't have as much vertical as many other areas in Europe. In general European caves are more vertical than most US caves, and the rigging styles are a bit different, though the different styles are starting to merge. As far as the cavers and the communities, they are more alike than different, though there's a lot less secrecy in Europe. The entirety of the Belgian cave database is available online.

    What sort of boats do you use in caves

    Is there any difference between those orange gloves and the typical blue PVC gloves?

    • @DerekBristol
      @DerekBristol  6 років тому

      Those are the Galeton Memphis Red PVC coated gloves. They are reinforced with Kevlar so they last a bit longer, especially when doing lots of rope work. The trade-off for the improved durability is that they are a big stiffer and so some dexterity is sacrificed.

    How did you Swaygo pack do in Belgium? Do they want to buy a couple thousand packs?

      It did great, as usual. I think they would be a big hit there.

    nice!! I'm a bit scared to do those kinds of stuff , how do you overcome the fear?

    • @DerekBristol
      @DerekBristol  5 років тому +3

      That's a complicated question. I look at there being two types of fear - rational and irrational. The rational fear shouldn't be overcome or suppressed. It's telling you that there is a real risk - potential for a fall, risk of drowning, etc. It should be respected. The irrational fears - dark, small spaces, exposure, being uncomfortable, being alone - those are all things that can be managed by experience, mental conditioning, focus. Some people are naturally more susceptible to irrational fear of one type or another. I'm fortunate in that not many things bother me. Caves can be good places to face a number of fears.
