    The devil is in the detail ! Ive always loved this song since it came out many, many years ago , and now youve explained the harmonic structure it tells me a lot about my " song radar " ,,!,, 😊 im lost in music ....

      @@studiosys You are right, it is a great well constructed song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel, with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. A great marriage happening between composer and writer. The same could be said for Bacharach and David.
      Glad you found my
      tutorial interesting, and enjoyable. Thanks for your comments. 😎🎶

      Well I don’t know about the God thing. Probably more like taking the time to study and learn the craft of playing and arranging music. Oh yes, and hundreds of hours of just me, alone with my piano. The bottom line is you enjoyed my music which makes me very happy. Thank you for your kind and most welcome comments.

      @davidburtstudio  Рік тому

      Ahh, but I do play it “in rhythm”. The tutorial is intended to educate the viewer into various considerations of the harmonic and melodic structure of the song.
      If you check UA-cam you’ll see I have also posted my rendition of the song. No dialogue, just me playing my own piano arrangement.

    Hi David,
    great videos and you are doing the kind of analysis I wish I could do.
    Could you recommend a specific book, or books, to start the analysis journey of getting to the master point of where you at?
    Much appreciated and keep doing these great videos!

      If you are serious in your quest to learn how harmony works I strongly recommend the Gordon Delamont text book series. Kendor Music Inc. Start off with Modern Harmonic Technique, Volumes 1 & 2. There are 7 books in the series that cover such subjects as Modern arranging, 12-tone composition, and melodic techniques. You would however need a good teacher to work one on one with you. You won't be able to do these books on your own. I was one of the fortunate ones to be able to study under Delamont's direction. Another approach you might consider is to go to my website. From the home page click on tutorials. I have all my tutorials listed chronologically starting at a very basic level , moving up to more complex materials. The tutorials I've created cover along the same lines as the Delamont book series. Certainly not in as much detail as his books, but generally in a more approachable, friendly manner, I wish you the best of luck in your pursuits.

    Piano needs tuning :)

    • @davidburtstudio
      @davidburtstudio  2 роки тому

      The piano is tuned before each tutorial or solo performance.i do. Unfortunately, there has been the odd time that one or more key notes slip while creating my videos. Time does not permit me to redo my videos when that situation happens. It’s the down side of acoustic pianos, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

      Well written songs are often easy to play because of the creativity, and skill that went into composing them in the first place.

      The tutorials I post are not intended as “how to play a given song”. You can easily find those type of tutorials from easy play to more advance on UA-cam. The tutorials I post are for student who wish to understand what principles and structure the composer used in creating the harmony and voice leading principles that went into the creation of the song.

      Hello again, What I should have mentioned and sorry I didn’t sooner, is any song that I analyze in a tutorial I have also posted an arrangement of it. The Shadow of Your Smile is no exception. No talking, just music, but following for the most part the the chord changes discussed in the tutorial. If you can’t find the song please go to my website: www.davidburt.com. On the right side of my homepage click on SOLOS There are over a hundred titles to choose from. Good luck with your music endeavours. 😎

      My tutorials are NOT equal. This one along with Billy Strayhorn’s LUSH LIFE, and others are complex in nature and therefore my tutorials reflect that. That is why I have a disclaimer at the beginning that says in a much nicer way, “if you don’t understand certain musical concepts you’ll be completely lost”. Fortunately, I have separate tutorials that explain in detail every concept I discuss in these videos. It’s expected that students will use the pause button, and even replay a section to ensure their understanding is solid before moving on. As for the sound problem, it could be improved if a recorded in a professional sound studio rather than in my home. However, in all the hundreds of replies I’ve received over the years you are the only one who has brought it to my attention. Perhaps the problem might be at your end.
