The duel that redefined Star Wars lightsaber action in the modern era. A great debut for a next generation Star Wars installment films and for 21 century sci fi cinema.
This is hands down the best light saber duel in the entire series. Notice how it all came down to skill and adaptation. When Darth Maul was fighting 1 vs 2 he focused on defense and trying to separate the two Jedi somehow, so he always tried to position himself in a way that both fighters would be in front of him so they would have to be more aware of their ally as well to not hit them by mistake. Then when he singled Qui-Gon out, he realized that Qui-Gon was hard focused on his dual blades and feints would work on him, so he feinged a forward attack but instead pushed Qui-Gon with his saber guard instead, breaking his guard and finishing him instantly, it all happened in the spam of a couple of seconds. Then Obi-Wan who was observing, noticed how Darth Maul would try using his saber guard to attack his guard as well, antecipated it and split Maul's saber. And later when Obi-Wan was disarmed, he went for a risky move to leap over Darth Maul while disarmed but force pulling Qui-Gon's lightsaber, which caught Maul off-guard. And finally a cool note about this is that this situation is also something Obi-Wan would be prepared for years later, when Anakin tried to leap over him from a lower position, since he had used this strategy against Darth Maul before, he was fully prepared for it, which is why he warned Anakin to not try it. The prequel series had the best combat scenes in my opinion, and of course the sequel series are just garbage, as the protagonist simply wins because she is faster/stronger/more determined etc, you can never see her "outplaying" her opponent or adapting to their strategies, she simply overpowers someone or gets overpowered herself, its boring, the choreography doesn't do its job.
Qui-Gon Jinn lost his second duel with Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and his preferred lightsaber combat form was a major factor in his defeat. Lightsaber combat has seven main forms, with Jedi and Sith learning the basic Form I (Shii-Cho), after which most would have a personalized style favoring one of the other six forms (or a combination of them, in some cases). Qui-Gon Jinn’s favored lightsaber combat form was Ataru (Form IV). Form IV - Ataru - is a fast-paced and aggressive lightsaber form, whose practitioners often use Force-enhanced acrobatics in combat. This, of course, is demonstrated best by Jedi Grandmaster Yoda, who is perhaps the practitioner of Ataru, though many of the form’s other users employ its signature acrobatics far less often. In addition to Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn, some of the most notable masters of Ataru are Mara Jade, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Cay Qel-Droma. While Ataru could be highly effective, Darth Maul was still able to exploit it in his famous duel against Qui-Gon. Darth Maul Took Advantage Of Ataru's Greatest Weakness. Ataru, like all lightsaber combat forms, is not without its weaknesses. Form IV is at its strongest early in a battle, especially when its practitioner faces a single opponent and has plenty of room to maneuver around them. The Form’s greatest weakness is that its aggressive and energetic nature quickly depletes its user’s stamina, making them weaker as a duel progresses. Moreover, enclosed spaces further rob Ataru of its advantages. As revealed in sources like Jude Watson’s Star Wars Journal: Darth Maul and Ryder Windham’s The Wrath of Darth Maul, Darth Maul recognized Qui-Gon Jinn’s use of Ataru, and the Form’s greatest weakness, in their brief duel on Tatooine in The Phantom Menace. Darth Maul exploited both weaknesses of Ataru in his second duel with Qui-Gon on Naboo, enduring Jinn’s aggressive attacks and remaining largely defensive, while also allowing Qui-Gon to drive him toward an enclosed space. Even with a momentary pause, Qui-Gon did not recover his energy, and Maul eventually found an opening to kill the Jedi Master. Note Darth Maul’s preferred lightsaber combat form was Form VII - Juyo - which struggles against multiple opponents. Darth Maul worked around this weakness by separating Obi-Wan Kenobi from Jinn. Darth Maul Was Trained To Take Advantage Of All The Jedi Weaknesses. Darth Maul was a Sith Lord in Darth Bane’s lineage. Like all of Bane’s Dark Lords of the Sith, Maul was specifically trained to exploit all the weaknesses of Jedi Knights as he, his predecessors, and successors sought to undermine the Jedi and Republic from the shadows. Naturally, Palpatine (Darth Sidious) and his apprentices would familiarize themselves with the strengths and weaknesses of all seven lightsaber combat forms and train to exploit their respective weaknesses. Darth Maul was thus able to quickly adapt to Qui-Gon Jinn’s fighting style and turn it against him in The Phantom Menace. Now The question is why didn't Darth Maul slice Obi-Wan when he Jumped over Him? Essentially, Maul is suffering from the Sith's most common and greatest weakness. As Luke said to the Emperor, "Your overconfidence is your weakness." Maul is not in a fighting stance. He's not paying attention. He's not on the alert, he's convinced he's already won and there's just the dying left. At the same time, Obi-Wan is being everything a Jedi is supposed to be - calm, controlled, self-reliant, unemotional. The greatest strengths of a Jedi up against the biggest weakness of a Sith - and the Jedi won. I still call this a bullshit.! Let's also remember this line from Mark Twain: At the end of his Duel with Darth Maul, Obi-Wan is trapped on the edge of a pit. He then jumps up out of it, calls Qui-Gon's lightsaber and chops the Sith Lord. While in the air, Obi-Wan did a Berani flip (a front flip with a half twist) over Darth Maul's head. This jump from Obi-Wan is just like another jump at the end of Revenge of the Sith, but it's Obi-Wan that got the high ground and Anakin that does the aerial maneuver. This move ends badly for Anakin, Obi-Wan slicing Anakin's limbs. Despite having the advantage of having a higher ground, why didn't Darth Maul punish Obi-Wan with his blade when he was at his mercy!?..This is the biggest fucking problem I’d been having with George Lucas. I will never forgive Lucas what he did to Darth Maul.
Ppl accuse neeson of mailing in this role, but u cant deny the immense adulation he obtained with the fandom. His work remained smiled upon years after the release and up to the present.
Apart from the significance of the actual event, I think what made this duel so iconic was how much they gave us after the OT. We got to see both Jedi and Sith in their prime, fighting a faster paced duel involving all three original lightsaber colors and, on top of it all, a badass new type of lightsaber
@@theimmaculated6480 also obi wan used a dark side move on maul and used the same move on Anikan also when Anikan jumped after obi wan said he had the high ground he actually got the high ground as he jumped so in a certain point of view obi wan used the low ground against Anikan

May I ask what kind of quality is this? My eyes can’t wrap around how cool this looks? It’s like 4k, 60fps? And I’m just watching from my phone! Someone kindly enlighten me. :)
People really don't give Maul enough credit. He basically defeated 2 Jedi in one go, all on his own, as the first Sith to fight them in a thousand years. But sadly, since he's a Sith, George Lucas said he had to die, even when Obi Wan was disarmed and the fight was already over. Canonically the best lightsaber duelist in Star Wars lore, written out of it after only a few minutes of screentime.... Ray Park basically made this the best lightsaber duel in the franchise, too. No dialogue, just raw fighting and choreography. At 1:37 he's constantly spinning around to check behind him for the laser doors so he won't run into them, while still fighting Qui Gon. At 2:56 he immediately turns his attention to Obi Wan after killing Qui Gon, without wasting any time gloating whatsoever. At 3:37 he repositions himself while swinging his saber towards Obi Wan to keep him at bay, so that he won't be able to hit him while his back is turned. At 3:44 he jumps over Obi Wan's attack, switches the saber from his left hand to his right hand, and finishes with a taunt, all in a single move. By the way, as revealed in Behind The Scenes footage, Ray Park and Ewan McGregor were fighting so quickly that editors had to slow the footage down to make it more believable. Watch the fight at 1.25x speed to get a feel for that.
This was definitely my favorite scene in the whole movie!! However, I really wish that the writer/director had Mace Windu join Obi Wan and Qui Gon to fight off Darth Maul!! Only this time, Windu would have a blue lightsaber, since his Phantom Menace action figure comes with that color!! 😂

All the prequels were terrible, over the top, they tried to show case new special effects far too much, but the characters Qui Gon, Kenobi and Darth Maul sold it; Qui Gon’s death was suitably shocking, it pays homage to the Tragic death of an old and wise master who has seen a lot of shit, But Darth Maul should have lived somehow and returns as a central villain for the following two episodes like Vader does, except with cybernetic guts and legs, a great moment in Empire Strikes Back is when he first appears, has audience thinking ‘Holy shit, he is still alive?!’, Because it is unclear whether he survives at the end of the Death Star Assault, it is a short range tie fighter and the nearest Imperial Base would be uncertain how far, Vader was presumed dead
