There are more than 120 commercial recordings of this popular work. Prokofiev himself made the first in June 1932 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Piero Coppola at Abbey Road Studios in London; it is the only recording that exists of the composer performing one of his concertos. Martha Argerich famously recorded the work in 1967 with Claudio Abbado for Deutsche Grammophon; she recorded it again in 1997 with Charles Dutoit for EMI, this time winning a Grammy Award. This is THE recording which won a Grammy. Martha is in a class by herself. There is no one else who comes close to this piece. She is extraordinary here.

I think this is one of the best Prokofiev 3 l have ever heard by ANYONE! I came to Argerich later in my life. IMO she is one of the best,if not the best pianists performing. In some pieces she is untouchable.
There is some kind of ‘magic’ she is able to achieve I have not heard by any other pianist. Is it her touch. her unique form of peddaling, her phrasing of each measure......I don’t know. Whatever it is she is spellbinding. My only regret is to never have seen her in person. Maybe one day. Thank you Ms. Argerich for bringing your utterly unique talent to this world.

I missed hearing her play this in Boston in the 80's, but then had the opportunity to hear her play in London in the last several years. What a privilege to hear one of my favourite pieces played by the woman who is my favourite interpreter of it. Brilliant.

I had the privilege of hearing her perform this piece live in Carnegie Hall in the 80s. It was one of the most thrilling events of my musical lifetime. People were SCREAMING at the end, the likes of which I don't think any rock concert could match. It was thrilling.

No one knows Prokofiev better than Martha. She could play him slow, IF she wanted to, or fast, because she can, but in no case could anyone do it better. Critics should start taking lessons. Martha knows how to flatter the composer, and in this case, a very gifted and difficult one. Thanks for this version, Martha.

If you go to 27:05 there is a big difference in the way Algerich plays this part vs. Wang. The first time I ever heard the song was in the movie, “The Competition.” Amy Irving did an excellent job with her piano faking lessons. She played the glissando the same way that Wang does. By dragging her fingers up and down the keys. But Algerich always plays all the notes individually, the hard way, even in her earliest videos on UA-cam. I saw a clip somewhere of Prokofiev playing a different piece of his the same way. That’s why I think she ‘gets’ him the best.
Wang also sounds fantastic playing the piece. I compared Wang to Algerich using this link. ua-cam.com/video/SefZnhpO5Ag/v-deo.html

That was the very same reason Paul Wittgenstein didn't play Prokofiev's 4th Concerto after comissioning it.
Prokofiev's music is not one which goes straight to your heart, like Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov or Chopin... but when you embrace it, it's hardly possible to forget...
It goes beyond what most people is accostumed, nevertheless has something I can only call magic, that fascinates even if you don't fully understand...

I believe I heard Martha remark in an interview, "...speed was never a problem." Martha is worthy of worship(!) and playing that rascal Prok is a delight if you play - so many performers "light up" when playing his stuff. His sense of humor is everywhere in his music.
Martha + Prok = Manna from Heaven - and I mean the fresh stuff, not the stuff they sell at Whole Foods....

Dutoit is a wonderful conductor - he always seems to get the best performances out of orchestras and soloists. While I realize that this a matter of taste, and that Haitink (who at age 85 may not be conducting that much longer), and Jansons are still alive and conducting. Sir Charles MacKerras, while now dead (2010) has a great discography as does the deceased Carlos Kleiber.

It has been so long since I wrote this reply, I have started the video to listen to is once again. This woman is a force of nature! And it's not just banging and fast fingers. She really does a service to the music. Noting the entry from Andy S below, I would love to have heard her play it at Carnegie Hall. She has such fun when she is delivering this piece! Her Rachmaninoff Three, also on UA-cam, played when she was a young Amazon, is also beguiling. Having said all this, I have no favorite pianist who I hold above everybody else, but I think I have a favorite performance of this piece, and that is by William Kapell. He was every bit the technical wizard that Argerich is, plus I find his interpretive force and detail to be, shall we say, deeper. Kapell died young, in a plane crash, and was generally a very good colleague to his peers. He would have liked Argerich.

I concur with all the positive and very sensible comments on this page (and what a sensibility compared to so many other youtube commentaries! Congratulations to all of you of music lovers.) But contrary to what some else said I do like the roughness of the orchestral sound. To me that is also very much part of Prokofiev's musical world. And Dutoit, like Previn, gets out that sweeping, romantic sound when it is called for, like in the third movement from 23.09 onwards. I am under the impression that the quality of the preserved recorded sound, is not so good, leaving the strings a bit blurred. I have an old commercial release of this concert and the sound is definitely better, with a more pronounced, clearly audible orchestra. But Argerich remains the absolute champion in this piece and I especially like her in this performance. But I may be biased because it is the first recording I heard of the piece.

I can image her saying to the conductor at the end of the first movement "too slow...faster, please!!" She plays this concerto as though she owns it (of course, she does own it)..I don't there has ever been (or will be) another pianist who can give a performance quite like this...
Although I understand that AdL used to play this earlier in career...I would have loved to have heard that...

  • @magnusjakopsohn7824
    @magnusjakopsohn7824 8 років тому +10

No it is not too fast. Alexis Weisenberg and William Kapell also did this one at a supertempo, still beeing able to do it justice.
And if I could play this one at that speed completely perfect, I would too. Nothing is wrong with speed if you do everything right. And this music needs speed, it is a really boring concerto if you play it too slow, then you miss a lot of details that the speed brings out. She is unrivalled as a perfomer of this one. And at that age, what more can you say than wow?! Comparable to Claudio Arrau making THE definitiv recording of Liszts Transcendental Études at the age of 75, and he stills owns those pieces, like she does with this one

People constantly complaining about the excessive speed of performances might need faster ears.

hah, I'm really wondering why there aren't people complaining about the recording quality. That sticks out as a lot worse than the performance.

This is a thrilling performance, but talk about a war of dueling tempos! The whole thing almost goes off the rails around 1:30, when Argerich and the orchestra get out of sync. Presumably that's why she is yelling at Dutoit after the 1st movement.

I think some people's problem with the speed of this performance is that they find it to be so fast that they don't get a chance to wallow in the majestic opulence of Prokofiev's music. I thought it was a fantastic performance but I can see both sides of this issue...

Excellent comment!! I am on the side of those who prefer the slower pace but, as you wrote, there are two different points of view and neither should be called right or wrong. Playing at this pace would certainly be beyond most pianists.

My personal preference is for a slower tempo as well. My favourite performance of this work is by Vladimir Ashkenazy, but my opinion may be biased as he was the one who introduced me to this amazing piece. I used to listen to his recordings of the 5 Prokofiev piano concertos at least once a day. I guess I've become somewhat conditioned to his pacing (which is a lot slower and weightier)

You might like Graffman's version a lot or maybe not. It is considered masterpiece.

Not being facetious here, but I wonder if Oscar Peterson could have played this...and vice versa Martha playing some of Oscar's material. I would also love to hear Martha attempt some Art Tatum. Not sure that either could cross genre at extreme difficulty level, but for sure Martha is just spellbinding in her talent.

I don't understand the complaints. Argerich and (young) Kissin are the definitive performers of this piece. Wang is pretty damned good too, if a little faster.
