Downside is UA-cam uses artist name recognition to find songs so if you happen to have the same name as another artist you run the risk of their songs appearing on your channel and getting UA-cam to sort it out is a right hassle.

    Presents are supposed to be “starting points” for producers to further tweak the sound and make it their own. But most just use them as “ending points” treating them as synths that are “finished” and that they can’t be improved upon or changed in any way. Cymatics was never the problem, it’s always been our unwillingness to experiment or our desperation to fit in with the sound that’s popular at the moment.

May I point you Mr Mau5 to Van Halen's first album from 1979? This sound has been done a lot since then. I get you, but how is he supposed to do that? An analog reverb? Yeah, would do the work, but he doesn't have that kind of studio. Or you meant a reverb hall?
      Don't forget that the concept of natural sound, is to make it sound like you're in that beaufitul orchestra room, feel that vibe/feeling. It is not always possible to have that kind of room at disposition and for that possibilty (of making it sound so natural from home) we got computers. Back in time it was all analog true that, but it was unthinkable for a "common person" to book a recording studio. Gears were expensive and almost all mechanics, eventually driven by a central computer with many people working behind the controls. Today you can make hits from you laptop, great sounding and from home. And there are countless of great analog modelled plugins out there (Mäag, Waves, Brainworx, ...).

    Idk if you'll see this, but I respect you and your work, your music has touched me and you don't even know me. You have a powerful effect with your sound. And I've personally stumbled onto effect overlays on stock sounds just the other day, it's so wild to hear from deadmau5 himself saying that's the key to it... I know I'm a nobody rn but I just wanted to say this was refreshing to see somebody speaking on this directly after having the same thought christalize for me the other day. Wild and crazy coincidence, that. Even though I stumbled on this a year after you posted it, to me, it's so relivent to me in my life right now, so thank you for doing this, I want you to know your words echo, and it's hard to pinpoint the mass effect...so...thanks for putting this out there, it's crazy what kinda resources there are for people if they look, and that's thanks to creators like you choosing to peal back the layers, so I respect you for that. Big ups from canada.

    There's something poetic about this. His studio is full of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, the kind of stuff most producers could only dream of having access too, and yet he's sitting at the computer ranting about how he can't understand why someone would ever want to use a dry synth sound. All these amazing tools around him, and he is so incapable of thinking outside his very limited style that he's just dumping generic effects onto generic synth patches and then proselytizing about how he's some master producer because hacks like Mashmellow are somehow even lazier than that.

But hearing people say trippie red and playboi did this just throws the whole perspective of the origin of the sound out of wack. Talk about an audio bummer, man.

      Hey, if you mean the drive/saturation, its distressors. However you don't need distressors to get this saturation. The fx don't need to be anything special, just some creative routing into a nice delay and send bus. I've grown up using a laptop and branched out slowly, using a good bit of hardware now, but i've made sure to be diligent about what shines where, and the simplicity of it is, you can achieve the sound of high end if your ear can properly judge whats happening. High end gear just gets you to that sweet spot instantly, but you can still get to this point, wiith just a longer and more complicated approach. You can get the sound of distressors using a decent mixer and some high end plugins.

There should be a signature, something a little different, and adding some weight or analog flair or whatever is a good idea.

If I had his money and his fame, the last thing I would do was worrying about what others do. I like the dry sound more. The overblown reverb and delay are shoving out all the space for other stuff to come in. Can imagine fading up into that tone for a bit for effect, but raw sounds are great for no-nonsense driving rhythm. It's like he's so scared of being thought of as "uncreative" he's overcompensating with effects.

    • @okidot
      @okidot 3 роки тому

      I like that you are thinking for yourself! Yes the dry is better than with fx. The FX sound common and computer-like. However, the dry setting is pretty dull. Common arp scale, with minimal patching going on, very harsh open filter... not very nice. He then rants that nobody could recreate this because the need distressors. Anyone who says you need 'x' gear to do 'y' is not a sincere musician in my eyes. I spent a few months with a stereo pair of distressors, and there is plent of ways to achieve this sound. The real magic with gear like that, is it gets you 'there' right away. Otherwise it takes time using a combination of other approaches

    Indeed, that's why I only use hardware, plugins are too tight, internal DAW midi is to tight. Hardware synths, even digital, the midi isn't as tight and has a groove to it and changes all the time. Don't correct it to perfection, just use it or only correct the latency if needed. Analogue synths are never the same and makes your music feel alive, but it is harder to mix, because it can be muddy as hell, but one you get it right, it sounds so well.

Perhaps they do and simply land relatively mediocre figures who say 'sure, I'll do your show'. Still valuable information for beginners and intermediates, of course, and outliers exist in their lineup (Chris Hadfield and Danny Elfman, for instance), but Joel really doesn't scream 'amazing songwriter' to me these days, which feels more objective with each new year.
