    This is the most beautiful thing on earth. Children should be shown this in school. I want to cry watching this because it's so beautiful. This animal doesn't even seem real. He is so magnificent. No other dressage horse will ever compare. May the big black stallion continue to inspire all for generations!

      Absolutely nothing beautiful about a horse that has been with rollkur. After a winning season, Toritilas was sold and then the injuries started to show up - injuries that result for rollkur training. People blamed the rider. I blame Gal because he's the one who caused the inflammation by rollkur, which eventually rendered tortilas a complete mess.

    This horse's front end is so extravagant, but he does not track up- not even in the extensions. It goes totally against the rules of what is to be rewarded. So confusing to anyone who would like to compete at the upper levels.

    • @savvydanee
      @savvydanee 10 років тому +22

      ***** yes,,I do mean stepping into his prints. I certainly do not expect the passage to track up, but an extended trot should OVER track even on a modestly built horse- and this horse is FAR from modest! I'm not trying to throw stones and burn people at the stake here, but those against hyper flexion state that horses routinely ridden behind the vertical cannot bring their hind ends under and are not truly pushing from behind, but rather develop incredible front end musculature (because of shortening of the muscles joining the poll and front legs). What we see here is AMAZING front end movement, and hind feet that cannot even reach into the front prints. I find that very telling.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +14

      The place where the hind feet land in relationship to the front feet is only one of dozens of things scored in each movement/gait etc. It is easy for beginners to see but they don't have the eye for the rhythm, suppleness and other factors so they focus way, way too much on the place where the hind feet land and talk about it forever and ever. Yes it is important but it is among a dozen other things that are also important, and it is not the first most basic thing that must be seen before anything else - there are always fundamental things for each movement, and in fact, how much a horse steps forward of his front prints is icing on the cake points, not the "must-be or it is a 4" points. The extended trot should also have much expression (lift, bend of the forelegs, cadence, bend of all joints of hind leg, including hock), but the fore leg motion needs to not be exaggerated. It CAN lift higher than the hind leg and be correct but the hind leg must look energetic and not lazy, it must be driving that lift, or lift can be due to tension in the shoulders, not what it should be, which is the only way the foreleg can float up is if the hind end drives it up and the horse is within millimeters of straight. And in fact often in slow motion if you mark the point on the ground where the fore hoof lands Totilas is in fact, tracking up' or better. The key is - is the foreleg lifting due to tension of the neck and shoulder, or why it should be, which is that hind leg drive. If the foreleg is going up past a certain point, the judge can only say, 'I think this is more from tension of the shoulder than from the hind leg drive'. Totilas has gotten scores of 1, 2, 4 and such on his extended trot, though Gal did improve it over time until it scored better than that. At this time at the top level, even a 7 is only really 'adequate' and always remember one key thing: adequate does not mean perfect. Even TEN does not mean perfect, it means, that's very good, not perfect. Nothing is ever perfect, and the scores are defined that way to make that clear. And Totilas I don't recall ever getting a 10 on extended trot. In many ways his other work is very good, but like many top horses he has a really good transition from piaffe to passage and several other movements are very good which is how he gets the high score, NOT because everything is perfect, but because some are very good. There have ALSO been horses who could not 'piaffe their way out of a paper bag', like Ganimedes, whose forte was the extended trot. There are different horses with different strengths.

      Thomas F WHOA BUDDY!!! I have spent my whole life studying the biomechanics of horse and rider and I am not parroting anyone. Why be so rude?? I have and have had many horses in training- not big ubber movers (well, I did have a few of those too) but average everyday horses. Many that really do struggle with lengthenings and tempo- some have lateral tendencies. But all of them- even the short legged long backed horses that struggled to track up in walk, could track up in a long free trot.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +4

      Danee Rudy LOL...basically because you are not sounding like anyone who has any familiarity with dressage OR biomechanics of dressage or even just horses in general, and because you DO sound like you're mindlessly parroting what others have said - pretty much verbatim. Keep in mind that biomechanics is different depending on the discipline (what is claimed to be a 'biomechanical principle' on which western riding is founded is non operational in dressage, for example) and that virtually no one who claims to study biomechanics of equine motion, really does..

    This horse loved his job and he loved Edward Gal. This should be apparent to any educated eye . This is his natural movement that has been polished and enhanced by one of the best riders in the world. As soon as anyone of you can publish a video that demonstrates your abilities and experience with a horse as brilliant as Toto then... your words and opinions will hold weight! As for the haters...Maybe you would appear wiser if you said less about others skills and showed more of your own. Just my opinion of course.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +9

      No in fact it isn't his 'natural movement' which was very flat without any knee bend. Look at the videos of him as a 5 year old. But this is exactly as it should be, as the bending of the leg joints, lifting of the feet and upward spring of the entire body is a product of the more advanced training - which is akin to the way the horse shows off for other horses, by gathering himself and lifting his body upward by action of his powerful musculature. If the horse were not ridden correctly even now, his gaits would be as flat and straight legged as a show hunter's. And in fact, Mathias Rath usually rides the horse with less 'bouncy bouncy' than Gal, mostly because the more traditional type of dressage, that's how it is done. The difference is not because the horse is 'unhappy' or doesn't 'love' Matthias Rath, it is a very healthy normal horse who loves anyone who treats him well.

      and the discussion about classical riding or not classical riding is stupid, classical riding you need for all riding even jumping , cross country eventing or dressage , the word classical comes from classic = great , a classical rider is a great rider and the others are riding in leisure time going for a walk , thats all the difference , there is no new riding , only horse got more elastic and better by the time and breeding .....no horse would do that if the rider wouldnt ride classical = great !! Gal is one of the best balanced riders in the world , but the leisure time riders dont understand

    • @dominicweber
      @dominicweber 5 років тому +22

      No. This horse has been trained in Rollkur. Any educated eye can see that. When riders train in Rollkur, the lower neck muscle shortens as the head is always near the chest. Once in competition, when they put the horse's neck and head back where it's supposed to be, the front legs therefore follow, as the neck muscle is short, and they thus start to have this massive front leg action. Any horse with front legs like this and hind legs that don't follow in the same manner have been trained in Rollkur. As easy as that. And Totilas most definitely has been.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +18

      Actually Matthias Rath is an extremely good rider and has been for a very long time. This is totally BS that he is not a good rider and was a bunch of BS started by two men who want to pretend they are experts and make money as 'consultants', then this was repeated on the internet 'until it became true' (ie, people just believe it without questioning), and most of the people watching haven't the ability or experience to understand if the consultants are telling the truth or not, so they just parrot what they are told. The trouble is that Edward Gal did everything by his own peculiar way and the horse was too old to adjust to a somewhat different method. This is why so few other people wanted to take over the ride on Totilas, because they know he is an older horse and set in a certain way of training for a long time. In many ways, Rath is MORE traditional and MORE classical and correct than Gal. Especially his position is better, especially his lower leg and feet, which on Gal are a little too comical. But in the end, Rath had to go to the former coach of the Dutch team and switch over to the way Gal did things. And in fact, when Rath first started riding Totilas the results were quite good, but the horse was just too set in his ways to change. Perhaps If Rath were given more time and privacy and not put under such a magnifying glass, he may have eventually been able to reschool the horse to a more classical way, at least a little bit, but it would not change completely at this older age after so many years of the Gal routine.. There is also the problem that the horse is older and like any athlete he won't perform at the top of sport forever and ever. We have retired horses who get light riding, and get to enjoy life and take it easy. They enjoyed showing and now is the time for them to relax and be respected and cared for and given thanks for all they have done.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +2

      Oh I think that is total BS that the horse 'isn't happy' and I don't think you really have ever seen him other than in a video or perhaps watched the PETA videos that say he is 'unhappy' because he is playing with some toy in his stall and 'bored' because he is inside or neighing at dinner time. His stall door is closed? Probably because like many breeding stallions he is trained that when the door is open, it is time to breed a mare. Actually I think the horse is having a fine old time no matter where he is, he is a well adjusted horse with a good sound character and temperament, and as long as people pay attention to him, exercise him and dote on him with grooming, treats and provide him lots of opportunities to have sex with other horses (he is a breeding stallion, that's what they do), he is very, very happy. This type of horse is NEVER going to stand still in its stall asleep like an old riding school horse if anyone is around, he will always be a busy body. His attitude is hey world, it's all about me, that is what makes him such a great show horse. We have one like this who is always eager for the next event of the day and is always saying, 'come on, hurry with my dinner', or 'come on, come on, I want a treat', or whatever is next, and ALWAYS it is all about him, and the world revolves around him - he draws out the best in everyone around him and life is a great adventure for him.

    What kind of "warm up" is this? no streching, always short reins...

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +7

      You don't understand. A good many horses stretch AFTER the ride, not before. It varies from horse to horse how they warm up best - and this is also not hunt seat or western riding, the reins are not always flapping in the breeze here, that doesn't mean the reins are TIGHT though. A decent rider can ride with his reins shortened up and still have a very light contact with the horse's mouth. But also remember one fact, you are not seeing the entire warmup in this video - many of these shows involve a 10-15 minute walk just to get to the designated warmup area. In some show venues the groom will walk the horse (in hand). All on a long rein, IF that is how that horse warms up best. I have one who needs the walk warmup on the loose long rein and one who will have a very, very poor technique if you warm up that way. But even the idea that all must walk around for so long with long reins before the ride is just not true anyway.

    • @scotchb29
      @scotchb29 10 років тому +13

      Nothing with understanding or not! I just cannot warm up my horse shortening the reins at the beginning! I definitely have to WAIT until he lets me put the reins shorter, and this needs time.

    • @thomasfaltejsek
      @thomasfaltejsek 10 років тому +8

      scotch-B No, you really don't understand - at all. MANY horses cannot be warmed up that way - it also changes as you move up the levels and start doing collection, and find that you're affecting the horse's work negatively by warming up that way. Until you get past 3rd 4th level you may not get it - but also, that long long rein walk is such a tradition in American dressage, largely because the RIDER doesn't want to work. This idea that all dressage horses MUST warm up on long loose reins at a walk is a fallacy - that it must be a lengthy walk and ONLY walk is a warm up gait AND that it must be before the other work is ALSO a fallacy MANY horses have been given the HABIT - and that is their ROUTINE - that does NOT mean they need or require it, nor does it mean they benefit from it!!! However many horses you've taken to Grand Prix if you think all MUST have the long rein walk before work then you have not had enough experience....but FURTHER, you didn't even see the entire warmup of this horse - the rider may have had that long walk before this video started. I suspect however that MOST of the walk warmup is for the amateur rider, not the horse. The rider has been sitting all day at work or is lazy and doesn't want to put on any effort, so insists on this business...in fact even horses who DO need a walk on a long rein, need much more than just walk to warm up.

    • @savvydanee
      @savvydanee 10 років тому +14

      Thomas F To me excellent contact is when you can release the rein and have the horse maintain self carriage OR release the rein and have the horse follow it down into a stretch. I understand one cannot have ideal contact all the time, but at this level, a rider should certainly be able to start his warm up in a stretchy position.

    • @scotchb29
      @scotchb29 9 років тому +6

      Danee Rudy: absolutely right. All horses that have been ridden correctly, need appro 30 minutes to warm up. The reins must have always contact to the mouth, at the beginning long but-with-contact and after 30 minutes walk included, the horse ask you to put the reins shorter and shorter. And how he asks? you just feel his back under the saddle: his back must be always extremely soft and let you sit very deep and confortable. As soon as the lenght of the reins becomes too long, the rider feels it inmediately in the horse-back. It becomes harder so you shorten it again a little bit. Many rider confuse long reins with loose reins. And of course, a horse that has been badly ridden will never accept long reins at the beginning. Like Totilas with Gal. (Gal said himself: "I never let him stretch I always keep him up")
