    The common signs are dogs that are so tightly bonded that they stress out when away from each other and also dogs that are so tightly bonded that they don't learn to accept new people and animals properly.

    I have two husky lab brothers that are 10mo and they're definitely 3-4x the work of one pup, but watching them play and love each other makes it worth it. One recently got a bite on the face 😢 at the dog park. The other wouldn't stop licking the injury so they've been separated for two weeks while healing happens. I've been taking advantage of all this individual time. The separation anxiety and confidence when alone are definitely the two biggest hurdles, you're right on the money. Subbed!

      Thanks for the kind words! What you are describing is definitely the most common result of Littermate Syndrome. Two dogs that don't fight each other but instead love each other and are overly bonded and have trouble being apart. Sorry your pup got hurt at the park, but it sounds like it created an ideal time for you to build their confidence when on their own!

    The first sensible advice I have seen on littermate syndrome. I always adopt two male pups from the same litter together and I have had no issues with both Alaskan Malamutes and now Siberian Huskies. Step 1 is to visit the pups and observe their behaviour when at play. Some naturally bond, some don't like each other. Secondly, make sure that they know that you are the leader of the pack. You don't need to physically dominate, just control things like food and access. Third, take time out with them separately and don't make your attention a competition. I keep getting asked at the kennels why my dogs are so well trained. It's simple, reward positive behaviour.

    Ours tried to kill eachother all the time. They couldn't be around eachother for more than 5 minutes. The positive side to it is that we got really good at breaking up dog fights early on.

    I have two 14 year-old sibling sisters. And it's crazy because the dominant one has the problem and she's not around the other one but the non-dominant one is OK if the boss is not around I'm saying what I'm saying I do not do not want to even think about when I have to put one down or the other there is both starting to have problems once blind, and the other one has neurological problems

    Why do some dog trainers say littermate syndrome is a myth and others believe its a real thing?

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining

      I am mystified why some trainers say that Littermate Syndrome doesn't exist. We have been doing this since 2006 and have seen more Littermate Syndrome cases than I can count. My guess is that those trainers just haven't seen enough Littermate Syndrome cases to really understand the issue.
      We have worked with over 20,000 clients so we have enough internal data to be 100% sure that it is a real thing. It is especially noticeable when you see it in breeds that generally don't have any aggression or major fear issues. For example, when new clients call with a Golden Retriever that is aggressive to people we find that they have two littermates almost 100% of the time. Thanks for the comment!

      @SuburbanK9DogTraining very interesting. Do you think there is credence to the argument that it has nothing to do with them being littermates and more to do with improper training of the dogs in question?

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining
      @SuburbanK9DogTraining  6 місяців тому +4

      @@aardeng That argument is definitely made and makes sense on its face. The main thing we point to regarding Littermate Syndrome is that it causes aggression in breeds that almost never show aggression.
      We call Goldens "the breed you can't mess up". That is an exaggeration of course, but Goldens and well bred Labs can be socialized and trained very poorly and are almost always still trusting and loving of new people.
      That being said, we get so many calls each year from people that own aggressive Goldens and Labs and they are almost always Littermates.
      We encourage people to take Littermate Syndrome seriously because preventing it is easier than fixing it and the prevention is free! Just train and socialize the dogs together and separate and they will be much better off.
      Thanks for sparking this conversation!
