Perhaps because I've an Ebay dealer so long, but I feel grading became popular in the late 2000's. I honestly long for the days of 05 to 2010 when you could roll into an LCS & clean them out of NM-MT or better vintage cards. Even back them it was tough to find high grade mantles that weren't slabbed, but vintages commons was were it was at. You could 1955 commons for $15, get them graded for $6, and sell the 8s for 50 and the 9s for 150-200. Honestly I wish I went from town to town back then.
Refreshing to see some "seasoned" collectors discuss the hobby. ALSO, to see some very nice vintage, not one of the 43 variations of the same exact card. I started collecting in 1986, and was brought up on 50's and 60's cards. There will never be a better era of cards/players than that timeframe (at least for baseball). Newly subscribed, look forward to additional content. Have a wonderful week gents.
Guess other grading companies will benefit off of this. An average person will not pay $150 for grading when everything else is expensive. Just got a few cards graded with SGC, it might be less value but I can see their popularity growing even more as the months go by.
@@gotbaseballcards-com of course the operative words are "at this time" -- when PSA opens up a $50 or lower level, it will be lights out for all of the recent startups and SGC's turnaround times will be 2 days since they will have even less cards to grade than they do currently
Subscriber count has doubled quick and I’m sure it will keep growing. You guys are great. Very informative and will check out your website for my next submission.
At some point, the amount of people willing to pay those prices to have their cards graded will drop off. It just isn't feasible for the majority of card collectors. Those buying individuals will also be hit with higher numbers when purchasing cards due to the cost of grading. I don't see a majority of consumers being able and willing to pay those prices in the long term. I know they're doing everything they can, but for the foreseeable future this just doesn't seem like it can be sustained. I'm hopeful that this price to grade will eventually come back down to where it was or else it will play to the advantage with those who have the means to get their cards graded at these high prices and will eventually wipe out the those trying to move up in the hobby from even being able to enter.
I think in the very short term they'll get caught up to Feb 2021, but March will take them forever. When I heard about the eminent price increase I was cleaning out shoes boxes. That of course was the time in which PSA shutdown the local post office.
I'm a little confused. I'm a new collector and I have a few cards I would love to have graded. One of the being the Derek Jeter rookie card from topps. In total I have about 30 cards I would love to have graded. So would it be worth having them graded? Would I send them all in as a lot? Do they charge per card or do they charge per lot? Sorry for all the questions. Thank you for taking your time.
At $150 plus shipping plus insurance plus selling fees on ebay you better grade cards at $300 or more selling and keep in mind your cards won't all grade 10s
Yeah I've got over 300 cards to grade and at the price grades are going for on a chance for a 10 is just too high of a risk. The $20 per card though won't happen until their overflows are taken care of and they're back down to normal. I went to the Sports Collectors show in Chicago this past July and one of the reps told me it'll take probably a few months to even a year at most for all of the back orders to being fulfilled. That sucks but I also refuse to go anywhere else unless another grading company, like, HGA and GMA gain more recognition.
@@Platelunchexpress Right now they're charging $150 per submission and that's down from $250 that was set back in June. I'm sure we'll see another decline at some point.
Finally, a common sense conversation on this topic. The hobby has taken a direct hit with the slabbing area. At some point, it will be interesting to see what happens when all these cards at PSA are returned. Thanks so much. Jumped on your bus and subbed!
I hear what you are saying regarding people waiting on the sidelines ready to submit when the price is right. When PSA reduced to $150 per card you gave an example of one person that submitted 179 cards however PSA just graded 830,000 cards in the month of September alone. They have increased this number month over month since the shutdown which shows that they are expanding their operation rapidly. Also, I believe that there are many cards that would have been graded in March which are no longer candidates for grading (Coby white, Darius Baisley, PJ washington, etc). I am suggesting that PSA is already well on their way to handling bulk volumes like we have never seen in the past and the people will submit less than they did in February/March because the resale value just isn’t there anymore and may never come back on most of those prospects.
I agree -- people submitted a lot of crap late last year and early this year....that crap won't be submitted in the future, assuming those people have learned from their mistakes
I love psa card grading, I think it looks very nice. I am actually a pretty young kid but an avid collector. I am pretty sad that it costs like 200 dollars now to get my cards graded. This is way over my budget and I rather buy other raw cards or packs. Loved the video and I agree with all the things you guys said. I actually might want to become a profession grader.
That would be better than no one being able to submit at lower levels, but I've never heard about that being in their plans but only time will tell. Much of course depends on how quickly they continue to ramp up turnaround with more employees.
East Coast PSA in New Jersey should be coming soon, half of the country can send to California and the other half can send to New Jersey. Think of how many cards they would be able to grade. I'm sure there is a lot of grading talent in the northeast part of the U.S. that can grade cards as well and when they are done grading it can go right to Goldin Auctions. Great video.
I prefer BGS/BVG because I hate the way a card slides around in a PSA holder. I'm not buying anymore and keeping the ones I have still until time to sell them.
It definitely is a tricky situation because if they expand and hire qualified graders it makes no sense lowering prices because of the need for grading. But if backlog does go down and they do lower prices the influx of cards would just stagger again. It really does depend on the hobby and submissions.
Depends on the condition of the card. For example if your Payton graded a 10 they would charge you $3000. Mint 9 $600, 8 $150. What you need to determine what you think the card will receive for a grade based on their grading criteria scale. If the Payton grades higher than the level that you submit the card for they will up charge you.
I do understand your frustration. Hopefully as PSA & BGS hire more people, the prices will continue to come down to make it more affordable for everyone.
@@gotbaseballcards-com The problem with PSA hiring more people is they are going to have guys that do not know anything about some rare cards. I am talking about Venezuela Topps. Do you have anyone at Topps that can help replace my damaged SSP that I sent in. I’ve been waiting for over a year now. Tracking shows it was never received by USPS after they said it was sent back and customer service doesn’t care or want to make it right.
@@gotbaseballcards-com know anyone who can put a word in their ear that they need a uniform bordered label, instead of one that appears off center? Just that little fix would convince me to use them.
Yeah Joe, I think your so called Wildcard factor would include PSA forging a partnership with Fanatics, and scales up for the future now, and doesn’t have to eat the overhead cost-burger on it’s own.
I disagree on the last statement . I think if your a collector you shouldn’t care on the slab because your not selling it but if your a flipper you want psa because u can get it back and run it at auction to recoup the cash at the highest re sell value in the fastest time frame . Sgc slabs get killed at auction and can be very tough to sell and sit awhile at buy it now . Obviously for modern cards this is which primary is what flippers are submitting
Just a great video. Only two things can happen, 1) PSA is purchased or goes bust as balance can’t be achieved as they continue to lose market share and death spiral hard to escape. 2) they never reduce prices to a point where most collectors can use them. We are looking at end of 2023 for any significant improvement. The market could be completely different by them. If they were caught up today, and opened up everything, they would get millions of cards and the nightmare would start over. My guess is PSA is acquired and all bets are off.
