My friend said this to me and I was so annoyed because he wouldnt listen to me when I said it won't size you up to eat you
Even just basic logic should tell people this makes no sense. If a snake needed to lie down next to prey to see "can I eat this?", they'd never survive in the wild as species. If you wake up and find your snake lying next to you, frankly, you're in no more danger of it eating you than you are if you find your dog lying next to you. I mean, you probably still want to get it back in its enclosure, but you're not in danger.

How about talking about how "Reptiles will give you salmonella!" but no one talks about how dirty humans can give their reptiles e. coli. Safe practices go both ways.

Oh yeah, that myth is awful. Even for the animals it's kinda true for, like goldfish, that's *not healthy*, that's a creature with severe, probably painful deformities due to poor care, and it's inexcusable

My mother told me the sizing you up myth when I got my corn snake. Who was barely a foot long at the time. She also told me to get to the hospital after she bit me...

When I told someone I was getting a ball python, he gave me the sizing up story. He learned a lot that day. My mom said they'll smell. They do not. Dad said they'd attract bugs, and he was correct. They love that heat, I guess.
When anyone says they smell I give them one of my ferrets......now those smell.
@@TheOtomeBug lol right? I had a pair way back and that was a pretty awful smell. Out of all of my animals, the African soft furs smell the worst by far, but ferrets may have even been more pungent.
We were doing research on where to get Leapord Geckos and we were at a pet store, my parents asked what the enclosure should be like they said it needed like a ten gallon and sand would be a good substrate. I leaned over to my mom and whispered "don't do that"
I just want to tell everyone in the freaking world not to get reptile advice from chain pet stores. Do NOT do it
When I first brought one of my snakes home from a reptile expo I noticed she had stuck shed on the tip of her tail that looked really bad. I figured I should try and help her with it immediately rather than waiting, and as I was dealing with it she climbed right up onto my shoulder. She does better with handling than any other reptile I ever had, just absolutely fearless.
Different reptiles, even in the same species, have different tolerances for handling. Rather than going with some kind of "one size fits all" approach, just learn to recognize when your animals are stressed or irritated and adjust accordingly.

Don’t worry mate I’m in my twenties and still around half or a bit more of the people I know dislike my reptiles solely because they feel bad for the locusts I have to torture for it to eat/ think it’s nasty. Hardly any of these people are vegan or anything like that, just can’t understand it haha

The "sizing you up" myth is so bad I heard it in multiple languages - polish, german, czech and now english. It's always, without a failure, a "family friend" or "a distand cousin" or a "friend of a friend". The best time I heard it was when I said what sort of snake I was getting (a corn/king/milk hybrid boy) and my friend told me that "at this point he will be big enough to swallow your head whole and he will be just sitting for months slowly eating you until it swallows you whole". I... have no clue where people got this myth from to begin with, but the variations of it do tend to get incredibly stupid.

Another myth I hate is "x" doesn't climb. Like I hear this a lot for Hognoeses and Royal Pythons and mine both like to climb every so often. Sure they arent tree boas but the give it a go! Also when people say Royal pythons are like owning a pet rock. Again I take mine out for handling and he never stops moving!
I have a kenyan sand boa. Literally everything about them talks about how you never see them and that they never come out. Meanwhile I catch mine CLIMBING every other night.
@@pearldab7781 I think people have that idea because in the wild a sand boa wouldnt climb. But if we look at the wild, would we consider a sand boa up 30 cm from the ground climbing? Not really, when "climbing" species are found several metres above ground. But in captivity people take that to mean that they never leave ground level for some illogical reason. So in captivity 30cm is considered climbing, but in the wild that would just be overcoming and obstacle... like a huge tree root or whatever. If that makes sense? Lol

4 of my 8 ball pythons climb, my hognose climbs, the boa adores climbing and one of my corn snakes is a massive climber alot of those snakes... usally dont climb but more then half of them adore climbing lol
My blue tongue is the same way. Everything says the don't climb. My girl looooves climbing up her plants. So much so I added (gentle) slopes to her tank so she can look from up high.
at "enclosure too big" I literally turned behind me to look at my beardie (cuz the enclosure is beind me) and asked her "is the enclosure too big yoda?" and she looked at me like "i'm trying to bask mooooom". It's a 190 gallon tank, and she loves it lol
When people start telling me the sizing you up story as if I've never heard it before I like to spoil it by finishing it for them. They always seem so disappointed when I say it's not true.

I’ve never owned a snake but from videos I’ve seen and my brother’s bearded dragon I think they feel something just not in the same way. Atleast I will always choose to believe that😭

I got my first reptile, a corn snake, in April and the no touchy myth had me full losing my mind. I was worried she escaped but I was too scared to check on her 😂 i gave in and checked on her eventually... big surprise... she's fine.

It would be good to cover myths about reptiles being stupid and/or it being necessary to feed live rodents (apart from in some exceptional circumstances) if you did a Part 2. I'm glad you feel this way about enclosures. I always felt like I COULD live in a cardboard box, but I like my house a lot more. To that end, my last two leopard geckos lived in a 45 breeder (male and female) together forever and it was great.

“That snake has to be poisonous” is what I get tired of hearing. Mind you i own colubrids, boas, and pythons. Surprisingly enough none are poisonous. (It’s like the term venomous doesn’t exist)
There are poisonous snakes. I don’t know how many there are, the only one that I know is the Tiger Keelback. It is both venomous AND poisonous. It gets the poison from the toads it eats.
Glad to hear about the 10gal comments and yes, I would enjoy a video about enclosure size misconceptions. Even for my 2-4” Mourning Geckos, 12x12x18 feels small to me because there’s so many of them. I can’t imagine recommending a 10gal for a Beardie.

I was at a pet store and an employee told me I could put a iguana in a ten gallon, like what why I am getting a 40 gallon for my leo

Two things are crazy here. First and foremost, that a 6 foot iguana can go in a 1 1/2 foot tank, and second that they recommend iguanas in the first place!
Don't trust the chain pet store people. They are mostly young kids looking for work, and through no fault of their own, don't know jack. They are taught what corporate tells them, and they parrot it back. They feel REALLY bad when the find out how wrong they were. (There are some exceptions, and the good ones either make major changes in their stores, or get out.) Do your own research, your animal will be happier for it.
I'd love to see a video about searching for the best breeder or place to buy your reptile!
maybe talking about how you should know when a breeder is trustable or not and what questions you should ask them! that kinda stuff.

When it comes to the "don't handle" myth, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing a physical on all pets you get. If you don't know how to do a basic physical on an animal, please, please research it before buying the pet. It is very important to know what to look for as far as illnesses goes in your pets when they arrive at your home, either from buying them at a store or online. Even animals that rarely carry diseases could be carrying some kind of mite or infection that could spread to you or your other pets. This is another reason why quarantine is very important. However, if you don't do a physical on your pet when you get it, you may not notice an illness in which they may need special treatment or longer quarantine time for- or worse, you could end up with a dead pet if you don't give them a physical and refuse to touch them for a week.
That myth is just really, really negligent and should be thrown in the garbage.
I gave my spadefoot toads physicals when I got them. I've also been weighing them before and after feedings to make sure they are on a healthy weight gain path for spring breeding! :D

Snake myth I hear all the time: "Snakes a slimy!" (or scaly animals feel slimy to the touch)

About snake venom you must have never seen the "snake milking show" , the person milking the snake drinks some of the venom since it really does need to be injected in most cases to cause any harm. From personal experience eastern diamondback rattlesnake venom doesn't cause any problems when it gets in the eye. Mind you it did get my attention! Then again I had one friend get spit in the eye by a Chinese cobra, which aren't supposed to be able to spit. He was unpacking a shipment and admiring what a nice snake it was and the snake managed to hiss loudly and get some venom in his eye causing a great deal of discomfort. Then someone else managed to get some canebrake rattlesnake venom in his nose that caused one of the worst nose bleeds he ever had. Just remember snake venom varies geographically for example some of our FL canebrakes are known to have a more neurotoxic venom than other populations.
I think the biggest myth about reptiles is that they aren't intelligent. I still remember taking a Burmese python to the vet. It sat on the exam table not moving as vet techs came and went. As soon as the vet entered the room the snake wanted to take off like bat out of hell. It clearly remembered who that guy in the white lab coat was!
I got a veiled chameleon, and everything I watch says leave them alone, minimal handling, they only tolerate you, etc. Yet I can't open the cage to spray or feed or adjust anything without him trotting down to get on my arm turn bright green and climb up my arm and hangout.
He's gotta be the most social antisocial animal I've ever met

A myth that makes me furious is that ball pythons are basically pet rocks and can or even need to be housed in tiny enclosures. My ball python lives in a 142-gallon enclosure and still demands to be let out to explore every single night. She'll literally sit in the front of the enclosure and stare at me until I free her. She's also really smart and learns and remembers things quickly.
The Mexican black kingsnake is my favourite example of a snake who would never bother "sizing you up", and planning means to eat you
If something has the slightest chance of being food, they'll try and eat it immediately. Even if its completely inedible, or it's far too big; they just "try and eat now, figure out if it's actually food later"
They are by far my favourite species.

That last one man, I explain to people all the time that animals in general are much more easy going than you'd think. Like a tiger isn't that likely to attack you so long as you don't act like prey. Most animal attacks are just results of people invading their personal space. The only real exceptions are true ambush cats like pumas and mountain lions.

Venom doesnt absorb through mucus membranes fast enough to be dangerous with brief contact, though if you are allergic to it you can still react.
Venom is also able to be broken down by your stomach acid. It is a protein based substance, and denatured by the powerful acid quickly.
The saliva coating your mouth is also more than sufficient to prevent or greatly hinder absoprtion in brief contact.
So unless you have a cut or abrasion in your mouth, or ulcers in your stomach, and you sit there swishin venom or chug a bunch of it (which is just highly modified saliva itself btw, so... Ya know. Snake spit), you will be fine.
That's the whole gimmick with people who drink snake venom for the shock and awe factor, and why venom is different than poison. Venom must be injected and dispersed in the blood directly, whereas poison can survive your stomach acid and can absirb much more easily through mucus membranes.
That said, no - you can't suck it out 😂
In fact the act of suction on the skin brings blood closer to the surface of the skin, and thus it would bring more blood closer to the bite wound. Hypothetically, this should actually INCREASE the speed at which the venom disperses through your blood, soooooo...
I have no proof of that by any means. Just speculation.

Love the list and the video. And I agree. Normally I can't wait a week to handle my new reptiles anyway. I let them settle for like 36-48 hours, then I go in and check on em and handle them. Usually they're pretty fine with it. Right now I just have 1 snake i got in June that is still flighty with me. But like you said. Just 5 mins a day to try and work with them.

The only leopard gecko I kept in a 10g is a rescued one with bad MDB who can barely walk. She literally army crawled when she did move and couldn't lift her body up. She never left her hide and I had to put her food and water dish right in front of her. It's been over a year, she has recovered well, and is in a 20g now that she can stand up and move better. She can be seen out and about on occasion.
2 things. 1, I once accidentally fell asleep with my snake in my bed and she woke be up by tickling my toes. Fav snake memory. 2, I waited 2 days to start pairing with my crested gecko and was super systematic. He was totally comfortable with me in a week. I started hand feeding him day 5 and now he’s extremely comfortable around me. He gets a little nervous around new people but never flares with me and stays very calm. And I handled him day 4.....
I've shut down the sizeing (spelling?) thing quite a few times! But I heard the weirdest thing just the other week: snakes are noisy. Like, what? Yeah, my Burm hisses sometimes when he doesn't get his way but other than that there's absolutely no sounds from my snakes!

When I got my first Leopard gecko Yoshi, she was just under two years old, stuck in a 10 gallon tank, fed a bunch of crickets once a month with improper heating, expired calcium powder, no vitamins, never been held save for when she needed to be picked up to clean the tank. First day I got her, I picked up a brand new 20 gallon tank, screen, 100 watt heat lamp, heat pad, new calcium, hides, mealworms, water dish, all new everything. Took her off her sand substrate. Started holding her every day even when she kept biting me. After a few weeks she started to grow, stopped biting me, became sweet as pie. Ended up having to drop about 400 on vet bills due to her fragile nature from malnourishment but she's doing amazing now almost two years later. Got her on dubias. Dropped crickets entirely (crickets are assholes, kept biting her and each other. Plus they just randomly fucking die cause they suck at life so I stopped getting em.) Got her on vitamins. Take her and her adopted sister Belle out constantly (they're in separate 20 gallon tanks, don't worry. I don't co-hab save for my garters.) Point is, Petco a lot of the time is utterly useless. Never use them as a source of information like her original caretakers did. Always do a vast amount of research. Don't buy these animals if you're not willing to put the effort and money in to make them happy.
been begging my parents for a ball python for a while, and every time i bring it up they talk about their friend from college who slept with her ball python and was "sizing her up to eat her." going to send them this, thanks adam.

I fell asleep with my ball python one time and woke up 3 seconds after and went into a panic looking for it found it in 1.5 seconds as it was slithering into the couch cushion😂🤣😂🤣
I was at petsmart today, and literally they had a 10 gallon long short tank and the pictures on it for examples of reptiles to get for that tank was bearded dragon, and leopard gecko. Now im not an expert by any means im really new to reptiles but even i raised an eyebrow at this lol. I even asked the manager who was helping us about it and she said "yeah....idk what thats about i dont agree"
The first myth is the one's that's been haunting me. I'm planning on buying a baby ball python, but I want to start it out in a 4'x2'x2' because I don't want to be purchasing multiple cages. Plus, nature doesn't have borders, and with enough hides, the hatchling should be happy to explore the big enclosure, right?

I've never had a Reptile in a 10 Gal, all mines start off in 80 Gal tanks. I've never had an issue and in most cases I've found I have a lot more time before they out grow the space.

amazing video only thing i think was over looked is you can put a baby boa into too large of a tank/housing and have it not eat. My 1.5 foot boa did do extremly well in a 6'x4'x2' vertical tree branch zoo like enclosure but i have had the breeder warn that might be an issue.

myth number 2: I've raised Jungle Carpet Pythons from hatchlings, multiple, who are notorious for being defensive and bitey as hatchlings or if never handled. I handled them within the first few weeks, I held them about 5-10 minutes a day (without gloves because baby python teeth are nothing), and fed them for the first time within the first two weeks, I've even fed one snake the day I brought her home, no issue
Since it's a northern, and they are known to get rather chunky, I'd go with Sausage. I've often caught myself inadvertently calling mine Slink as well.
I figured that since you have a lot of Pokémon names for your reptiles, Lickitung was a good fit for the theme!

I started my leopard gecko in a 40 gallon and was scolded for it because they 'do best' in a 20 gallon. Fast forward to after her quarantine was up, I decided the 40 gallon was too small for her and now she has a 120 gallon on the way. The idea of keeping her in anything smaller than her quarantine hurts me, she uses absolutely all of the space and I'm excited to build her a larger and more natural environment for her.

I had fake ivy for my leopard geckos, 3 of them now, but it seemed to scare them whenever it moved. All are still around 3-4 months maybe 5. The Third leopard gecko I got was the easiest to handle from day one. It just chilled in my hand for 2 hours the first day.

I have 3 Boas that are all over 6' long that sleep in bed with me. A lot of people think that I am crazy or that my snakes are going to eat me while I'm sleeping and I am constantly explaining this same thing to them as well as telling them that I am too large for any of them to eat.

This link is of my 7' boa snuggling with me right after I had surgery in July. If I moved to give him room he would push right back in up against my face and laid with me like that most of the night. This was also one week after I got him for my roommate as a thank you gift because he had been wanting him for 2 months and nobody would buy him because he would bite. My roommate decided that Thor was too much snake for him and he officially became mine the day that I had surgery.

I would definitely love to see a video about a " top 5/10 reptiles that people think can live in a 10 gallon tank " video! I have always heard that you can keep male hognoses and male kenyan sand boas in a 10 gallon their whole life and would love to hear your opinion on that!

Yes I think a what not to put in a 10 gallon tank would be a good video! But maybe like common tank sizes that are recommended but are wrong could work like the Internet says you can keep a bearded dragon in a 40 gallon breeder it’s whole life 🤦♀️

There's one reason why "Sizing up" makes 0 sense. A rabbit or rat or whatever will run away, even if the snake asks politely if it can size it up.
