  • In this series of videos we take a closer look at some of my personal collection of fixed blade and folding knives.
    At the end of every episode, we rank the knife and give it an overall score out of 30 and graph the knife against the next so we can keep track of how the knives stack up against each other.
    In this episode we look at the standard issue knife for the Navy Seals Buds the SRK from coldsteel. This knife features SK5 high carbon steel 6 INCHES LONG and an overall length of just under 30cm.

    B.U.D.S. stands for Basic Underwater Demolition SCHOOL, not Seal(s). Actually, the B.U.D.S. issue knife (since 2015) is the Ontario MK3 Mod0. However, the SRK and SRK-C are still great knives.

      I’ve heard from a few different sources that the SRK isn’t actually the standard issue for the seals, which is a little disappointing they were able to advertise that in my opinion.
      Here’s a couple of sites I got my information from, I don’t know exactly as I’m only going off the info I researched to do the video, I’m happy to stand corrected though ✌🏼

    The vintage original SRK Carbon V (Sharon Steel trademarked steel, the same 1095CroVan Case / Camillus knives used) and the vintage AUS-8 flat-saber grind versions are much tougher and will take more abuse. They will not chip or crack with heavy abuse, only dent and bend. There are many SRK destruction tests to watch that are cringe-worthy and entertaining, most of the tests that do well are older versions, the new ones break under the same forces.
    New Hollow grind version makes the tip weaker and the higher rockwell hardness SK5 makes it more prone to chipping and breakage. The high hardness adds to edge retention, but in a true survival situation toughness is key. High hardness SK5 is brittle in cold temperatures especially. Many people are breaking the tips off the new ones with even moderate stabbing/prying, which isn't an issue with the discontinued vintage ones. For the price point they are damn good jack-of-all-trades best-at-none blade, just realize it's a knife not an axe or crowbar.
    Find a vintage ‼️made in USA Carbon V‼️ if you can they are much better and still floating around on ebay etc. I suggest reprofiling the edge angle to 20-25°. Also, there is a CPM 3V "super steel" version made in Italy but it's more expensive.
    They are great tactical-combat/SHTF blades. The older ones are "survival" strong and tested. Not the best woodworking "bushcraft" tool, but it will work.

      I was debating whether to spend he extra and go with the CPM version, but I have a 3V knife in my collection already so chose to go with one that I didn’t have to keep the series as varied as possible, but as a serial knife collector I’m always on the look out for a new one so I’ll keep your suggestion close to mind.
      Cheers mate 🍻

    The srk is not the Navy Seal's knife. A lot of companies lie about that. Ontario MK 3 is the standard and it's trash so they just use whatever they want to use per person.

    • @freeroamsociety7301
      @freeroamsociety7301  3 роки тому

      Man, are you for real? That’s so disappointing that knife manufacturers do that, hard to believe they can actually get away with it to be honest! Thanks for the comment though mate, hope you enjoyed it otherwise 🍻

      Take it up with Cold Steel who sells them to the Navy who then issues the SRK to BUDS trainees.
