Huge thanks for this. Tried this yesterday and the AFC with multi-field hack was a game-changer. Sure, it's not 100% accurate, but at f8-11 that's a non-issue for me. Fast, stealthy and I genuinely find it as good (if not better) than zone focusing - when it does nail focus, it's superb, even at wide apertures. Nice one!
Turn off EVF and LCD, set focus to manual and set the lens to 10ft. Set aperture to f8. Shoot everything that comes to within 8ft of you and it will be in focus. If you know the lens' field of view well, you will know roughly what is in the frame.
@@meditationdaily1129 you can stand roughly 10ft away from an object, focus on that, and leave the lens set that way. You can set it anywhere you like, really.
Wild. I've never seen street shot with these kind of settings. I can't picture it working for how I shoot, so I'm gonna try it out around NYC tomorrow. Never know what will inspire a new way of thinking on the street. Personally I have two profiles and I keep them pinned to the function button for hot swapping. One with iso auto + minimum 1/500 shutter + spot/af-s. Jump into that one and click to AF in one motion to isolate with low aperture. Thumb wheel can leverage iso to tweak exposure. Very cheaty stuff. 99% of the time I'm in the other profile.. just manual everything. Sunny 16 + zone/range focus. Perfect set up, just like the old masters but with the bonus of being able "swap rolls" to faster film when i wander into one of those quintessential patch of city shadows. Pin AE-L to the back button to at least make exposure a touch more reliable at times tho. Anyway. Nice work on your ig 🤌🤌
Thanks mate! Yeah there’s definitely more than one way to skin a cat! I love hearing other people’s tips and i’ll try out a few of the things you’ve mentioned too, sounds like you’ve got yourself dialled in!
@@BeKi-gs1wx I don't do anything fancy. I love the default color of the Q116, so I leave it alone. JPG+DNG, and often set the JPG to b&w so I can get graphical compositions easier (raw can be color if needed). Otherwise.. just auto ISO (no minimum) and auto shutter (set to minimum 1/500 via auto ISO). Aperture on the lens. Then I use the wheel to adjust exposure compensation on the fly. I set to wide zone autofocus but I shoot in manual all the time. Occasionally, I'll drop to F1.7 and click into Autofocus for an isolated portrait. 99% of the time, I use zone focus. F5.6 or F8, keep the focus zone at 2m (4ft to near infinity in focus) or hyperfocal- as though it's a "zoom lens" for focal depths. I find this is the best way to work as I'm in NYC and I either want stuff on my side of the street (2m center zone) or across the avenue/down the block (near infinity to hyperfocal). Hope that all makes sense! I keep it very simple, as I like the camera to be pretty transparent in the experience.
@@SourPlanet Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I’ll give your settings a go and adapt as I see fits. I’m new to the Q family so any help is much appreciated. Btw where did you put your AE-L shortcut to? Thank you
@@BeKi-gs1wx On the original Q, there aren't many options for custom buttons. The button dedicated to swapping crop modes (for mock 35 and mock 50 view) can also be programmed to handle locking functions- including exposure.
Used your recommended settings for street work with the Q3 and I am super impressed and grateful for the results. I used a Q exclusively for nearly 4 years of shooting (have been a photographer for over 55 years) and it was my fist Leica. Lot's of impressive performance but terrible autofocus particularly when so much better tech was available for rent even from Leica's digital partner, Panasonic. The Q3 is miles better than the Q in may ways. Had high expectations for autofocus improvements but with the settings I was using before your suggestions I was seeing at best a 20% improvement. I do a lot of shooting from the hip. The settings you recommended are stellar. Thank you so much.
Thanks mate! Happy shooting! My friends and family chipped in the get the Jesse print for my 30th. It’s edition 9 of 10 and the tenth one got snapped up by the NGV! (National Gallery of Victoria if you’re not from Aus). Very lucky to have it 🥰
Nice review. I saved you street settings on my user 6 to try out. I have found if you set display settings to EVF, LCD will stay off UNTIL you pull it out. Nice option and saves battery. But allows use of LCD when needed.
I found it helps give me a slightly better idea of what I’m capturing as opposed to looking at a flat dng on the lcd when I’m out in the sun rushing around
Did you travel with just the Q3? I am considering one, but not sure if I could travel with just a 28mm. I know you can crop with this sensor, but so can my A7rv.
My settings are a little different. It would be interesting to try it. When you darken the rear screen doesn't it limit you? Do you usually only use the viewfinder? And what about 7 frames per second - doesn't that make you take too many unnecessary pictures? Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Coming from shooting film, there’s no such thing as unnecessary pictures on digital! Especially shooting street, you never know exactly when the magic will happen, so why not over-shoot and increase your chances? I barely ever look at the screen or through the viewfinder anyway so my “stealth mode” has no downsides for me. Unless it’s something very specific I’m after then I can either use the evf or quickly switch it back to use the screen. I’ve been shooting 28mm for over a decade so have a decent idea of what I’m going to get, the rest is up the universe. Thanks again for another great question! Merry Christmas!
You are absolutely correct. Really bizarre video. He takes a magnificent 60mp 14 bit sensor and turns it down to medium DNG and 12 bit. May as well use a camera worth about 1/5th this much. And then publishes this video offering advice and doesn’t even realise he is neutering it
According to the manual you still get 14 bit in 7 fps but you loose the refocusing in between shots. So even in AFc the camera focuses on the first shot but not on the next shots of the burst. When the subject is moving to or from the camera it can be out of focus.
I actually found there was a slight boost in dynamic range in medium over large, and I used to edit everything on a laptop, but now I have a NAS server so I shoot large
I don't know why so many people call this the perfect street camera. I miss shots all the time because of slow response after auto power off. If I disable auto power off then the battery life is total shit. Never miss a shot with Contax T2/G2
Yeah fair, but I don’t seem to have this problem. I do have a spare battery tho. I keep the camera on then just press the shutter as soon as I see an image occurring to make sure the camera’s on. I find two batteries will last me a whole day of pretty rigorous shooting, and coming from shooting film just carrying one little extra battery doesn’t bother me either. I also shot a G2 for about a decade, love that camera but it’s nowhere near as fast as a Q3. Completely different ball park
Nope! And who said I never look people in the eyes? I engage when I want/need to. 99% of people would prefer you’re invisible anyway, and it gets better results, the aim is to capture candid moments without bruising the scene. When I do a street portraiture I’ll talk to the person. Street is completely different tho. Study Vivian Maier or any historically significant street photographer. Enjoy your day.
I honestly can’t fathom why anyone searching for and or just interested in street photography or Leica would make such a comment. I hate internet jargon such as Trolling but here is a clear reason such terms exist. Keep it up Lucien. I admire the restraint and good manners it took to leave your reply. Cheers!
These are really the most primitive tips I have ever heard, I recommend you use one cell phone rather and you can save a lot of money or buy several cell phones. Please do not take photos with the Q3, this is pearls where swine are cast.

I understood 7 fps does not support AF? Uses MF for first shot.
… and beyond 🥸🏴
Doesn’t the 7 fps degrade 14 bit down to 12 bit raw? At 5 fps you get the 14 bits raw back, isn’t it?
No idea, maybe!
