blog.BavAuto.com -- A short shift kit reduces the length of throw between gears on a standard transmission. This can shave seconds off your driving times. In this two-part video, watch as Bavarian Otto installs a UUC Motorwerks Evo3 short shift kit and Double-Shear Selector Rod on a BMW E36 M3 (95 thru 99). Both the short shift kit and selector rod can be purchased in our online store at www.BavAuto.com.

Thanks for the video. Family had an extra kit for E36 that I inherited and will be installing w/o pulling everything down if I can avoid. Seeing the clip and pins in-car certainly helps visualize.
Really useful video for my E36!
Thanks!!!
Otto, thanks again for another killer DIY. Your CCV video saved me so much money and time that it looks like the wife is getting a short shift kit for her birthday ;-)
Excellent tutorial !!
Good work. Like it so much
Thank you for this video sir you did a great job and you explain things in very good detail although is it really necessary to drop the exhaust pipe and the drive shaft to replace the short shifter bushings?
Very helpful video!
thank you for that awesome tutorial
Very nice video and product.
And Sway Bars for Christmas !
Thanks for the encouraging words.
Great video. Thank you !
Fabtastic video...hard without a hydraulic ramp though..but clear and straight forward seemingly..keep up your informative vids.regards..ed
Awesome, the end
EXCELLENT!!
Where can i get the color changing wire ties. Awesome video though really helped out!
Heh ..... where did you notice the "color changing" wire ties?
BavarianAuto @8:18 starts out blue. then @9:53 they have turned red. only a small continuity error lol.
WebdevShooters
Ah yes, we removed the tie before the install and then decided to show that you would leave it on until ready to install the DSSR .... Had to find another one.
What a great video- only problem is... now I’d probably only trust *you* to fit it! lol
Actually- this video has helped me make a choice between SMG and manual!
Thanks for the UK! 👍🏼
I just ordered one of these for my car. I noticed the lubricant you have on the shift ball at 8:15 looks similar to the Liqui Moly anti-seize compound you use in many of your other videos. Is it a superior lubricant than that green lubricant included in the UUC kit that you used on the delrin bushings?
Also, when adding plastic washers, how tight should the clips fit on to the DSSR pins? Are we trying to add enough washers to make the pin tight so that there is no rotation or play, or just snug so that there is no noise but the pins are free to rotate?
what kind of knob is it thats is really nice
Any secret to popping the carrier bushing back in between the pinch? Im doing this install but with a poly carrier arm bushing.
I have an 04 e46 330ci 6speed so its slightly different (ie: I have 2 pins on my carrier). It seems like I have to install the bushing while it is already on the carrier. I have no room above the transmission to slide it forward enough to bring it back through the bushing.
Can I remove the pinch?
do you sell the original replacement kit that is not the short shift kite?
Very clean and profexianal video. Two thumbs up if I had another thumb I would give you that to.
Hehe ... thanks besnik.
Does the dssr come included with the short shifter kit?
Does it change the neutral position of the shifter vs stock?
What should I look for in my 1988 3 series 325ix? (Awd). Is it the same process and the same products? What will be different?
Hi, do you have similar kits for the E-46? (Mine is a 6 drive 320d year 2002)
Kit-A = replacement of all shifter parts, to include; shift lever, selector rod and forward connector. Gives short shift plus replaces all of the wear parts (except the mounting bushings).
Kit-B = Shift lever only. Gives short shift, but uses original selector rod and forward connector. Does not eliminate all wear parts (selector rod & forward connector).
Kit-C = All of kit-A plus billet aluminum shifter support arm. Most reduction in shifter throw, only available for certain applications.
Will this fit on a E36 318i Sedan?
I recently purchased the UUC SSK and DSSR for my car (e39 525i). The fit between the bushing flanges and the DSSR is extremely tight -- it almost feels as if the DSSR has to be "forced" over the bushing flanges. Is this normal? From the video it appears to slip right over the flanges quite easily.
What shift knob are you using?
What is the difference between short shift kit a, b, and c on your website?
The DSSR (Double Sheer Shift Rod) is sold as a separate part. The UUC Short Shifter can be installed without the DSSR. However, the overall operation and the life of the forward connector, will be greatly improved with the DSSR.

My neutral does not return to centre, what is causing that, just had my selector rod joint bushing replaced and still has that problem
Is there a possibility that an e46M3 6speed fit an e36 M3 5speed?
Good work. Yes, you certainly can do some applications without removing the exhaust and driveshaft. You just have to do some it a bit blindly.
Depending on the model, it may be possible to install a short shift kit without removing the exhaust and the driveshaft. In the cases where it is possible, much of the work is done blindly and you need to figure out how to access and manipulate connectors that would otherwise have better access, so a "first-timer" may have trouble with it.
Looks easy, is it possible to do this without taking drive shaft off?
Where can I buy those parts
I want this on my e39!
My car won't shift into 2nd or 4th. What did i do wrong?
We're not sure exactly what you're saying, but the shift lever has a slight bent to it. The bend goes toward the rear of the car, so that the top of the lever is angled slightly rearward.
That's the next thing I would like to install in my BMW.
We do indeed have a UUC Short Shifter kit that will fit your 2002 320d with a 6-speed manual transmission. The part number is USCE. Please email our advisor at ajt@bavauto.com for further details.
my shifter feels like its made out of rubber shifting in gear... real flimsy :( i wanna consider installing short shifter kit but no sure which one is best
great video but wow, A lot involved to do a short throw shifter and or bushings to fix our sloppy shifters. :(
ghsty Hard work for great effect :)
In the video it mentions about the 'Bastard' clip that goes on the gearbox and how the pin is tight on the bushes yet doesn't do anything with them even tho the voice over tells us that he will explain later?
Certainly! In fact, UUC Motorwerks (the makers of the short shift kit shown in these videos) has a write-up on this. Go to uucmotorwerks web site (we cannot link it here) and click on the Tech Tips tab at the top of the page. We can supply you with all of the UUC and standard BMW parts to complete this swap. Just call us at 800-535-2002.
Wait wait wait, I think the OEM shift knob fits ONLY one way? So the shift lever should point slightly towards the front of the car, NOT slightly towards the driver?
can i use this for my 318is e36 1997
Sure can!

Can you do this with the exhaust on and driveshaft?
Idk
Do people ever replace the rubber portion (bushing) of the rear mount? There's still a lot of flex in there, whereas every other source of play has seemingly been replaced.
Yes, I'm positive people replace it if it's shot. lol
The rubber bushing in my E30 is totally gone and is solely responsible for the play. I'd rather just deal with it for the time being until I can justify its $100 cost and removing the exhaust and driveshaft to replace it. Full shifter bushing rebuild kits are about $150 including the rear mount, so that seems like the logical purchase instead; as well as a dssr, and maybe a Z3 shifter since this UUC one seems a little too short.
Yes. There are bushings made by Garagistic that are Delrin and eliminate the play created by flex at the rear of the carrier.
i bought a little cheap short shifter that was supposed to be a simple swap and now my car doesn’t go into gear with the car on😭
One of our agents will contact you via email.
buy an shifter from z3 M
GREAT: NOW YOU CAN SHAVE SECONDS(and eights of an inch) ON ANY 2 HOUR JOURNEY; say thanks to the man, people
Likewise, I would not buy one for mundane 2+ hour motorway journeys.
However, I would most definitely buy one because I use my E30 M3 more for tracking and driving along Britain's B roads where one is continually changing gear.
