Color Processing of my Fujifilm RAW Files in Lightroom

  • In this video, I explain exactly how I edit my RAW files for Color.
    This video explains exactly how I use Lightroom to take RAW files of any camera to achieve this.
    I talk about using the tone curve tools in collaboration the camera calibration tools.
    Of course, I know that this style is not to everybody's taste and post-processing is as subjective as photography itself.
    However, I hope this tutorial will help you identify at least a starting point for your own colour edits in Lightroom
    Whilst I use Lightroom for this, you will also be able to achieve similar results with other RAW editing toolkits such as Alien Skin Exposure which I'll be delving into deeper in a few weeks.
    Additionally, much of my colour processing has been born from some of the older VSCO presets. VSCO will give you more leverage as it utilises very clever calibration techniques by reading the camera you are shooting with.
    However, this is my starting point for colour editing my RAW files. You'll want to check each image of course but for me, it gives me a very filmic look right from the start of the processing workflow.
    The accompanying blog post can be found here: f16.click/tips...
    I hope you find it useful - any questions, leave them below and I'll do my best to answer them.

    Another great video Kevin and a fascinating insight into your workflow and creative thought process. I'm aware that you seem to prefer B&W for your wedding work and of course is a stylistic choice that suits your brand so well, but I'm curious as to what percentage of your professional work is shot in colour and what drives that choice? Is it client driven, the lighting on the day, the fact that the story plays out better in one medium rather than the other? By the way I'm one of the attendees on the X-Weddings conference on the 12th and get to shoot with Patrick La Roque the next day on his workshop. Can't tell you how excited I am for this fantastic opportunity to be engaging with such talented image makers and visual storytellers; look forward to meeting you in person. Cheers for the video; very professional and polished it is too!

    This is a great video, much appreciated. What I am interested in though is the process you used to arrive at these settings, most of your values seem to be quite formulaic, but work very well. As someone who has played around with the RGB curves, HSL sliders and camera calibration, I have never got results this good. So is it from hours of tweaking or some great book I don’t know about or is there a bit of learning from tips from others etc also? I know you mention your curve origin is a tweaked VSCO etc. for example thanks again Kevin!!

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому +1

      It's more like years of tweaking.... I've tried to find something that is a good starting point for all my Fuji cameras. The calibration panel will affect different cameras in a different way. VSCO does something very similar (but of course you have hundreds of film presets to choose from there). I try and stick to one style of processing mostly for ease aswell as uniformity in my images. Check out the F16 accompanying blog post (in the video notes) and there is a link to a detailed description of how the calibration RGB adjustments are very different to the HSL.

    Just when I thought I was good and had enough software..And then Kevin mentions alien skin. (I'd never heard of this..) omg I love this processor. It's fast as hell on my 3.1 mac pro. I love the way it processes the fuji raf files. Question for you Kevin? What as the the benefits of Lightroom over Alien Skin in your opinion? I kind of wish it had dehaze and spot removal but I might be overlooking that ?

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому

      ASE is very good but for some, it's not quite the same as Lightroom. Dehaze and radial filter for example. I think for people that don't want to go down the subscription route, ASE is amazing and in some ways is much better.

    The saturated color is nice, but the crushed shadows look so harsh to me, especially for wedding photos. This processing makes photos look like contrasty slide film. Wrinkles look more wrinkly. You generally can't white balance off teeth because they are rarely white.

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Merlin. As I said - this is just a process and could well be tailored to personal taste. You can't white balance off pure white (try it in LR - LR will complain), you'll be looking for something that is around 19% grey which I've found over the years come close to the tone in the whites of eyes and teeth....though of course, not always.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 6 років тому

      Ive seen many videos where they always show to use the white balance picker tool to just find the squares where the numeric values in the pop up window are as close to being the same to each other as possible regardless of the color (white, blue, grey, etc). if they are all very close in value then its a good neutral and you can WB off of it.

    • @MrStanmc
      @MrStanmc 6 років тому +1

      Actually, she did love the image - but thanks for your kind comment.
      And as I said, it's a workflow that can be tweaked to your own taste. It won't work on all images. It's up to you if you want to do skin enhancement and retouching.
      This tutorial is about colour, not retouching.

    Hello Kevin, Thanks for the video! I just have one question. I followed your steps as exact as I could, I even looked at the numbers in your curves and copied them exactly. However, my results are much different, Super contrasty images that I cannot even use at all. Do you think different versions of LR behave differently?

  • @phuocle
    @phuocle 6 років тому

    Kevin, can I ask why you adjusted the White Balance at the beginning of the edit and then adjusted the temperature/tint later on? Isn’t adjusting the temp completely changing the overall White Balance again? So why do two completely different edits at different points in the edit?

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому

      Pretty much always try and get the white point as close to a happy setting at the beginning. Further adjustments are likely to happen to the tone of course as the edit completes. But you definitely want to try and get the white balance as close to what you want it right at the beginning of the process. This is true also if creating monochrome images.

    Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing this valuable insight, always great, but with all respect, I believe you made a mistake in your initial statement when you bring the blacks up as trying to emulate your fuji camera settings... When you do that in the camera you’re actually strengthened the blacks. Your LR adjustment is doing the opposite... cheers

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому +1

      Hi Sergio, thanks - and you are correct in the observation but it's not a mistake. The shadows & highlights in the camera settings do work int he opposite direction if you like to the RAW processing, though I find these raw settings come closest (obviously not in every occasion) to the +2, -1 setting I'll normally use in camera. I'm guessing this is to do with the fact that there is far more scale in Lightroom than the 4 (or 2) settings we see in the camera.

    • @sergiocasado2978
      @sergiocasado2978 6 років тому

      Kevin Mullins thanks for your follow up Kevin. To be 100% honest still confusing to me... I have an x100f (after owing x100t) and as you know, even better for sure than I do, when setting shadows at +2 let’s say you get depper more pronounced darker shadows. When setting in LR shadows at +35 and blacks +25, what you’re doing is opening up the darkest areas of the photograph, resulting in less contrast image. In other words you’re aiming to increase the dynamic range in that case. Later on in you’re develop process you are somehow correcting this by playing with the tone curve and creating some contrast, but out of the sliders it’s the opposite effect compared to you’re camera JPEG settings. I bet you a cold beer by the Mediterranean Sea in Spain this is true 😉 🍻

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  6 років тому +1

      It's definitely true what you are saying (I'll have a Sanmiguel :-) ). The point I'm making I guess is that for the RAW files (which are so very different to the JPEGs), this is the configuration that gives me the density in the shadows that I like. I put this down to the X-Trans processor being less aggressive in it's deepening of the shadows compared to much more graduated adjustments available in Lightroom.
      When I edit JPEGs, assuming the exposure is correct, I pretty much just add a small standard "S" tone curve to stengthen the shadows + Highlights settings that I've got in camera.

    • @sergiocasado2978
      @sergiocasado2978 6 років тому

      Kevin Mullins 😄 You’re more than invited to a San Miguel by the sea Kevin, please reach out if ever get close to this area, I promise no Fuji raw talk 😂. I understand what you’re trying to explain now I think. It’s all about the RAW rendering in LR and trying to get closer to what the in-camera processor is doing then. I got confused I think because it’s counter intuitive the effect of the parameter in LR Vs Camera JPEG settings. Thanks again for helping to clarify

      you can always do on import into Lr to add your camera calibration profile of "Portrait" or "Cloudy", or whatever your fave starting point preset is so it doesnt look so flat. no reason to start with flat if you dont want to but RAW is RAW. In the film days you had negatives (your raw file) and you had to send it to the labs to get processed in their darkrooms (now done in Lightroom digitally). Same exact process. Nothing new. Nothing is free if you want to get high quality. If you want to shoot jpg and print at Walmart on crappy paper and use crappy techs you are always able to. If you want highest quality you need to put in the work to take them to the next level.

      All camera companies have their own in camera color corection algorithms. Therefore the color synsetivity and color spectral response curve will be different. Camera companies don't publish this data as they do for lenses. You may fine the tonal range, color sensitivity, full color sensitivity, and color spectral response from DXOMarks. Maybe

    Sorry but I didn’t like the end result at all. Too dark and contrasty looking and too much saturation. The blacks look crushed. But that’s just my opinion.

      That’s cool. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing :-)

      You will need the CC version of Lightroom I believe. Alternatively, I think Alien Skin Exposure can read the raw files now.
