Id love to hear you ask people, "How scary is the prospect of coming off of fentanyl/opiates/meth/crack/alcohol?" As a recovering addict, the thought of having to detox (usually non medically) is what kept me using. Those times waking up realizing "I'm in detox, and it's about to get bad" we're so terrifying that I just kept using one more day....and that mentality kept me sick for 15 years. You are a legend Mark.

To be honest with you. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m talking fent here which I didn’t even know was fent. I’ve been shooting dope for a decade and when I went to detox in July I tested positive for all fent. Same as my husband. We were getting sick from the fent. We were done. It wasn’t even good euphoria it made you pass out and want more when you wake up. If you do.
I was done. Cuts weren’t healing. I stopped being able to hit. I knew what would happen if We continued 4 months clean on the 3rd. The withdrawals didn’t even start hard until the second week and I walked through hell for 2 months. You need to get it in your head how sick you’re sick of being sick. I started using shrooms around a month in and it gave me hope. I micro dose now. And I pray for this man. We knew twins with a very similar back story as this man who are both dead because of fentanyl.

We use fentanyl in veterinary medicine all the time. It’s used as an analgesic. We used to use fentanyl latches but because of the abuse potential, by pet owners, who would pull the patches off and suck the fentanyl out of the patch. Then claim the dog removed it and needed a new one. So, we don’t use them any more. We use it now primarily as an iv for post-operative pain management.

Coke and crack are basically the same drug. It’s always crazy to me how people treat them like they’re two completely different substances… "Coke": Cocaine hydrochloride "Crack": Cocaine base. And when he says crack is much more intense than coke, like the high, that’s just because most people snort coke and most people smoke crack, so it’s just the delivery system that makes crack more intense. If you inject coke, it’s actually much more intense than crack. So it’s wrong to say that crack is a more intense, dangerous drug than coke. They’re the same thing, the high is the same, just different levels of intensity wether you snort, smoke or shoot. But shooting coke will definitely fck you up as fast as smoking crack, if not faster.

Shame? In fact, people are more likely to make up with someone who is ashamed of their mistakes. In one experiment, British psychologist Antony Manstead showed participants two videos, each showing a man knocking over a pyramid of toilet rolls in a supermarket. Once he showed that he was embarrassed about the mishap. The other time he didn't change his face. The result: The viewers liked the contrite clumsy better, would have even helped him. Similar reactions can be read in the comments under all the addict portraits. The question is: does this 43-year-old actually believe in getting sober?
I often watch these videos on my lunch break I have to say this time the grotesque story of a dog into fentanly made me laugh , (sad as that may be).

Are there any success stories about the people who came to LA because they wanted to get clean, and they did that with little to no relapse?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but LA seems like a terrible place to move to if you're intent is to be clean.
More than anything I wonder why do these people chose LA? Is it the access to programs there, or is it they subconsciously (or even consciously) weren't actually ready to get clean?
It's just such a common story, and its not like the reputation of skid row is a secret.
If you don't know, and you happen to see this, if they do move to LA can you ask a few people why they chose LA as their destination to get clean

So happy I got clean. I know it’ll sound weird, but I used oxycodone to get off fentanyl and not have any withdrawals (this is what kept me and others from getting sober). Did those for about 3 days and stopped. I’m 8 months sober and have never used for longer than 3 months. I would do a month here and be sober for 2-3 weeks and back to it for 2-3 months and repeat. Trust me, the grass is definitely greener on the sober side. I enjoy the little things in life so much more now. I hate it, but am glad I went through it. Made me a stronger person

It's really puzzling how people like Travis who have the entire world stacked in their favor, would choose to do dangerous highly addictive drugs. Maybe its the thrill seeking gene within them that tells them they're invincible to every falling down that dark hole. Although even though I was curious to experiment w/ drugs like marijuana, acid, mushrooms, peyote, hash & even speed, I knew that it was waaaay to dangerous to even try heroin once, seeing what devastation it created in people in my community.

Interesting, bc his own description of his background is not the brutally tragic story so many of Mark's interviewees relate. Travis describes his family as "really solid." His analysis is that the chemical power of intoxicants superseded his normal, adequate childhood, unless there's early lurking trauma he's not revealing
