This works way better than the sofa set up. Keep up the good work!
Yeah much prefer the close together feeling to the couch
I agree, table is better.
Sofa works with a guest.. but just the two of them? perfect as is
The table is the best, it can hide my gravis armour physique
I know what you mean, I got some choice remarks about my chunky thighs, I was glad when Pat decided to move us back.
@@thepaintingphase❤
Ohhh foreshadowing!
@@thepaintingphase people just jealous of how many kilograms you can squat
Classic Imperial Fists. Always hiding behind some barrier
I love the table it has always given the show a homely feel. Classic Painting Phase, missed you guys.
I think you're selling yourself short Geoff! We all have different skillsets, I bet Richard Gray gives a naff haircut! 😆
I swear these keep me sane while I'm working lol. Thank you gents for what you do.
I missed the table. Feels more intimate. Like I'm sitting down with my mates while we hobby 😊
The Table just needs a chair for Bella to make this perfect
Great chat and love the table setup, keep on rolling chaps!❤
Missed the table! Great show as always lads!
Love the set up fellas
Good to see you boys !
I panicked and thought you'd slow up 'post peachy'... I'm so glad you're still rocking it. Gets me through a tonne of hobbying
Plenty to come.
Is Peachy gone from the show for good?!?
What a shame :(
At least it means that any podcasts will be largely about the guests and less about “his time at workshop”. Looking forward to more gentleman!
@@donutbarbell That also provided context for guests who used to work at GW. These two lads, awesome as they are, don't have any info on GW insider stuff or intimate history within sort of.
love the pod, guys. thanks
The table really ties the room together
Liking the table set up, looks good on screen & suits the vibes. Always happy to have you lads chatting away while I hobby or doodle about in the house. As usual, nice one 👍
Table = Pub
Pub = Yes
I much prefer this format, keep it up you legends!
Much love lads
For decals, the "requirement" to put a gloss layer down is a myth. I've used decals for years in scale modelling as well, and rarely gloss before decals. What makes the difference is the use of setting solvents, and quality decals. Try simply putting a bit of Micro Set where you want the decal, apply it, tamp it down with a cotton bud (this is what will ensure no air underneath which is what gives the issues), then brush over Micro Sol. Let that work for a while, burnish the decal down again and a final brush over with Micro Sol and let it set up. Then whatever your final finish varnish is. Much easier than you have maybe been doing it. Hope that helps!
Agreed. Though I like a layer of some varnish first (I personally use a semi gloss), as it gives a more consistent surface for getting the decal to sit properly. Otherwise I think I follow the same steps you do, and they look great. Only issue ever had is first time doing Marine shoulder pads, is to put more brushes of Micro Sol on to get the decal to soften enough to sit flush against the shoulder pad, due to the extreme curve.
The table make the size difference quite notable, like a man and his son talking hobby
I look forward to keep watching your great videos 👍
I swear by the Mighty Brush decals, they're just so crisp.
I have to say the table is where you started, and honestly, i love the fact it gives the feel of a group of friends sitting around the table talking models and the viewer is part of that, Love the show :)
Thanks so much, very kind.
Keep up the great work lads.
Guys I really like the vibe of the wooden table with the bokeh background etc, I think it's the best way to go when it's just the two of you, maybe you could use the couch for interviews and what not, but something about the painting table just works imo!
I must agree, the table is best! Keep it comin lads!
Yay missed these chats. Glad to you both.
Love a good table, and that one is proper nice! Great chat lads
We love the table!
Im so excited to have an excuse to head over to Essen and see the golden demon!
Geoff, I also have supported my son’s Tau army. He’s actually put SOME time on assembling a few models and done some painting, but it’s a really impressive thing to behold even if we don’t get much table time with them.
That’s so great to hear.
Geoff's comment about working out all the rank designations hits home - deciding which bits/colours/upgrades etc are needed for a sergeant, captain etc. I do that with all my armies. And no one apart from yourself will ever notice or know.
Damn, what a nice camera you guys have. And the lightning!!
Glad we finally acknowledged geoff's sons army is actually his 😂
Great chat and happy to see things continuing as normal! Alternate title: Painting Phase: Return of the Table.
Glad to see Pat’s recovering well from his absolute battle with those airbrushes. I say both, all depends! Characters get molded, line units get decals.
I have to say I do much prefer the table to the sofa, great to get my painting phase fix
I personally prefer sculpted details. But then again I 3d print every model I work on so I can just digitally sculpt my own details and symbols onto armour, so it's maybe not entirely relevant to the discussion.
I use stuff like stencils a lot and just airbrush stuff like numbers onto bigger armour plates. Aside from just like different patterns I got a pretty massive set of "Temporary tattoo" stencils from Temu for like 5 euros and it contains all sorts of symbols, all letters and numbers so it's pretty great value even if solid third of the stencils there will probably not be useful to me.
You could make a little ramp for Bella if you have room for it and put a dogbed on it, then she can join you at the table :-)
I think if you build the exact army that comes in the box I think sculped detail is great, but the moment you want to make another chapter the sculpted details are a challenge. I am making my own chapter so I prefer blank shoulderpads as I will have to paint on a chapter icon anyway. Would love to learn how to get the decals to fit perfectly on round shoulderpads though, as I would love to use it on other armies.
The Dark Vengeance box had sculpted shoulders for space marines.
Those hooded heads on the new DA upgrade sprue are perfect for Raptors
I like the table look. Fits the frame better. But if you have a guest then maybe the sofa but shift camera round a bit if possible. Keep up the great work x
keep up the good work
Impeccable t-shirt crumple in the thumbnail, Geoff! And a lovely video, as always :D
Pat at his best!
Unless you need white pigment in your transfers, it's easy enough to lay out and print your own on decal paper with a color printer.
I do a fair share of transfers and sculpted icons so i really don't have a corner in this fight but I have NEVER used gloss varnish at any stage, before or after, when applying transfers and I have never had any issues. Just using Micro Set and Micro Sol is enough. And even then I only use Micro Sol when the surface isn't flat
I use Airfix decal fix (after a gloss varnish) for it all. I.e. soaking the decal off the backing paper, lubricant on the minie, sqouse down with a tissue then a matt varnish😀
P.s. great to see your first post peachy vid, seems like old times😊
So much better around the table, i understand the idea behind the sofas but it just didn't feel right. Nobody paints minis on a sofa, do they?
It's rob from brush and boltgun. He's a sound guy. 49:06
Years ago I used to be sculpted detail all the way, spent a fortune of giving each marine a sculpted shoulder pad. Now I only use decals, 1 due to price, and 2, there's a lot more monopose/sculpts about where the shoulder pad is a part of the model, rather than separate, and its such a pain cutting away the area now that an decal will suffice :)
For my Black Templar's I have done free hand, decal, and sculpted for various reasons. Even dabbled with the decal-as-stencil paint over. I think they all have their place in 40k, bit I think the question is wildly different when you leave to go to other models. Gunpla uses plain stickers to great effect. Warlord games Blood Red Skies decals make their planes gorgeous by painting less than your doing the decals. It's really an application question.
Always sucks when things don't work out how you hoped. But with change comes opportunity. And personally, I'm hoping that means more Jeff. You guys are a great combination, long may it reign, I'll certainly be here for it.
That’s so very kind thanks man. It’s really appreciated.
Same for Blood Angels, only sculpted detail on main characters. Hard to find 3rd party. Upgrade pack is 15 for 6??? shoulder pads. The mum in me says either do the sculpted for everyone or nobody.
Sensible inner mum.
Mum's know best.
This is the upgrade spru I always wanted ! It’s just missing another 50 heads hahaha
For my Blood Angels, I went for decals on all the Marines, apart from Sargents, who get full sculpted pads, Blood Angels trinkets etc to make them feel a bit more special. With characters, if they're not kit bashed, then they get the fancier decals that came in Leviathan.
Bpack templar decals have been a godsend for my old world Empire!
Ha black templar not Backpack lol!
I was (still am sometimes) into sculpted pads because they're super easy to pick out. Decals I've begrudgingly come to accept are great for how much more flexable they are, and for what you can do with them.
Even if GW don't make either, you can get custom ones 3d printed, or printed on printer paper.
I do think that Deathwatch, of all factions, REALLY do benefit from the sculpted pads, with all that detailed text. The chapter pad can be a decal tho, so much more varied, especially for marines as special as DW.
At least on the table setup you don’t need to wear trousers I guess 😂
Table seems better and more engaging anyway 👍🏼
Some of this week's DA preorders are coming with a different, hopefully more extensive decal sheet than the one's that came with the Deathwing Assault box. I have a feeling it will also include decals for some successor chapters after seeing the images in the codex
Long live the table!!
Make 1 greenstuff chapter symbol sculpt. Press that shoulder pad into blue stuff (oyumaru). Copy the rest using that mould 👍
Great episode Guys…..I HATE moulded shoulder pads!!!
Transfer all day long.
Great episode guys, personally in a decals kinda guy, but sculpted is best in looks alone
The guy from Brush & Boltgun is called Rob.👍
Thanks so much, I’m a big fan.
Bella needs a chair to sit on between the two of you. Hehe thanks for the video guys much appreciated
Where is the slapchop shirt from? I need one
The awesome team at www.grmdrk.com/ they have a great range.
I understand were Geoff is coming from, my eldest loves the game, but has zero interest in the hobby side, so I've put his army together and been painting it for him (well three armies, Necrons, Death Guard and Black Legion) and the same can be said of his second and third brothers who have (Tyranids and GSC, and Iyanden Elder between them) looking like it might happen for the fourth as well, he's just turned eight so around the time we let his older brothers pick their armies. My second who will be eighteen this year has started to put Lord of the Rings together though, so one might be getting into the hobby side.
As to pads, I am sculpted whenever possible, the fact you just mentioned phobos finally have Dark Angel iconography is really going savage my monies as I'll be using those to replace the plain pads across my army. I am lucky in that regard as I haven't got any of my DA past battle ready, which means no decals have been done yet.
The thing about Warhammer World not carrying stock is a real issue. The shop had nothing when I visited in October... The Black Library shelf was just sad; new Kill Teams were nowhere to be found; no Underworlds; Necromunda was only basic gangs and some scenery; Forgeworld shelves was just astartes/titan upgrades. Overall, very disappointing.
It’s a bit grim for the flagship and the distance some people travel to visit.
You don't need to varnish before applying the decal. Microset, apply decal, micro sol, micro sol, spot varnish
My son has done an awesome job constructing his army I have. 😂
I over paint my decals so they match the style of the paint job. It’s like tracing and colouring. Give it a shot! Also busts? Try it. It’s like green eggs and ham. Try it try it sam I am! You may love the amount of room and bigger details.
Jeff could get a Golden Demon for Best Host!!!
You’re far too kind.
Be nice if Warhammer stores could do 3d prints of faction specific bits, basically the equivalent of an upgrade sprue. They could keep it "in-house" and not worry about ip theft.
Huzzah for the table, plus the additional lottery of a furry head appearing for a look 🤣. I also have to enquire as to whether Pat is drinking black coffee, or whether that mug is actually Guinness? 😂
Sadly Coffee. Pat’s a wine boy.
I tell Geoff it's black coffee, it's Bovril.
Spiel in Essen is quite massive on the hobby board game side, and there’s some other miniature games there usually. I figure GW is just “enough with the bad press, let’s offload it and have them screw up!” :D They had 193 000 “turnstiles” over the 4 days last year. Time to push even more stuff in there with hotels getting booked a year in advance. ;)
I have a vinyl cutter and I cut out my SpaceWolves symbols, it works like a charm.
A month ago my response to this discussion would be “lol ok humie,” but since I’ve started my love affair with Salamanders I get what you’re saying. Finding out it was at least $20 for a single upgrade sprue had my eyes bulging out of my head. Luckily a generous local chap sold me some stuff cheap but it’s crazy. And Sallies are well supported! Thankfully there are lots of good third party bits for them Vulkan boyz
I prefer the table for the chats!
As a collector of homebrew chapters i have too design my own heraldry and print it my own decals. It works fairly well but the idea of being able to buy custom shoulder pads for my marines seems like an impossible dream...
You can make a stencil, using the a 40k font file
Decals! Lets me choose how to decorate my minis. And sculpted iconography can often look chunky. Here is a different decal sheet with the upcoming Companions, so I would bet 10£ that there are Deathwing icons on that one.
Stencils, easier than decals, cheaper than buying sculpted bits. Applying with a sponge gives the weathering at the same time.
In terms of decals vs sculpted details, I am very much team decal. I think they are quicker, easier to look weathered and they help sell the scale of the models better as I find sculpted on shoulder detail has to be exaggerated in size to make it easier to paint.
Totally agree-Geoff
Great stuff, as always. Did you give up the studio after Peachy left?
No still same studio, just moved away from the couches.
@@thepaintingphaseaahh, thats cool, i like this better to be honest
And all the freehand stuff is on the Richard grey patrion. He has done some insane stuff, like a Cape with all 4 chaos gods, and the freehand is the size of a euro coin
So what happens if you put a decal over the sculpted piece?
I’m not sure how that would go, to be honest.
The little guy turned out great! I think I struggle with purple because of saturation issues. As soon as you mix it with any blues/reds it just always goes dull on you. Your use of magenta tones probably helps a lot, since magenta/cyan are just better primary colors than blue/red.
What’s the plans for the future? Will you still be having as many guests as you did in the past?
We hope to keep guests as an on going feature. We’ve recorded an interview today and we’ve some
great guests happy to come on.
I feel pretty indifferent about decals... They're useful but often have problems of being not quite the right colour etc. Always worth a go at freehand too. Not as bad as you'd expect!
The new individual squad preorder releases coming this weekend appear to have new transfer sheets listed as 337 transfers which doesn't seem to match what was in the deathwing assaukt box listing...so maybe this is all moot for deathwing?
While I think that sculpted on details look much better, as someone who has bought kits that have sculpted on details, with the aim of converting them to other uses, I'd much prefer if they were decals or ideally, optional additions. It makes kitbashing that little bit more difficult and annoying to do.
Yeah I didn’t like the sofa, either.
I like table over sofa too ✅
I wonder if they could license a third party to make the decals that they are not going to themselves?
My ‘son’ now has six 1,000 pt. armies.
I bought a 3d printer because for heresy the cost of equipping 50 marines with helmets and shoulder pads would have been more than the cost of the printer
Are you guys going to UKGE this year? Last year was my first time there, i only went on the sunday and kept missing you all (not in a creepy way lol)
No, no. We kept missing you Philip 👀
@@thepaintingphase 🤣
Honestly I admire a bad freehand over a decently placed decal. It's not a perfect scale, but a good decal and a good freehand, it's hard not to love the effort of the freehand just a little bit more.
But specifically to this - 3d printed decals are sick
I guess narrative wise you could say, a marine has to survive x amount of battles before they get given a sculpted pad. Making all the smooth shoulder boys more like redshirts😂
44:13 ‘TIS A PILE OF POTENTIAL!!!
I can come around and build you a dog shelf : )
A dog shelf sounds amazing!
