ASUSTOR Explainer - Why does Playback on Plex Run Slowly on my Flashstor or Lockerstor Gen2?

  • Recently, ‪@LinusTechTips‬ released a video reviewing our Flashstor series of NAS devices. We are absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to have our devices in front of Linus Media Group for testing. We send these devices out to media to collect opinions to make our products the best they can be. In their video, it appears we have not communicated effectively about how to get Plex to play and transcode media at smooth and playable performance using the integrated GPU built into Jasper Lake SoCs. The design of the Jasper Lake SoC makes it unable to enter into S3 Sleep if Quicksync is enabled. We give you the choice inside ADM and this video shows you how to turn on Quicksync.

I have an Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T, but it does not seem to have the Media Mode tab under general settings. I pulled specs and confirmed I have the N5105 Jasper Lake. Is there a reason I'm not seeing Media Mode?

@AsustorTV - I have Plex pass, Enabled Hardware transcoding on Plex, and also enabled Media mode on ADM. My files are h265 HDR files at 4k but they do not seem to play well outside of my own network. I am trying to use my iPhone and Plex still seems to have issues. I am converting that 4k h265 HDR file from 32MBps to 20 MBps and I still seem to get a lot of hitching chugging and slowing down in the same way as before i enabled Media Mode on ADM.

Does this mean if I do not change the quality, the performance will be fine?

It is enabled in our other NAS devices, but this is a design quirk of Jasper Lake SoCs. As these are the newest, we had to make the choice to give people the choice. Some may not want the transcoding, but want the S3 Sleep functionality. When Quicksync is enabled on Jasper Lake SoCs, S3 Sleep is not able to be used.

Would be interesting to add this info to the product manual. Thanks!

@@ASUSTOR_YT I really like that fact that you're actually answering questions here in the comments. You don't see many companies do that. Especially that those are useful and elaborate answers, not just copy and paste stuff.

Hi, for years I was facing the problem when I tried to play some 4k content on my Asustor AS5202T, even using 2.5G link agregation... O check on my NAS sistema but this "Media Mode" on "General -> Settings" are not present on my NAS. This is not on my NAS option? Thanks.

      Have you got Plex Pass?

@@elcuboderubik Not yet, I’m planning to get the lifetime in case I confirm it will work, but as I mentioned, the “Media Mode” option on my NAS is not there….

@@Varellax Because the Media Mode isn't necessary for the AS5202T. For a smooth playback / transcode with your Nimbustor Gen1 (AS52/53 series) you need Plex Pass and 4GB of RAM at least (8GB of RAM is recommended). Just my two cents.

@@elcuboderubik Are you sure? I have been upgraded my NAS memory to 8Gb when I got it. So as you I just need the Plex Pass and it will transcode smoothly my 4K movies e videos. Is this right? Thanks @elcuboderubik

      @@Varellax Yes, it's. I've got a Nimbustor 4 - AS5304T (Gen1).
