PedalsAndEffects: DOD Meatbox Reissue

- Today on PedalsAndEffects we have a very special pedal review! We’re proud to showcase the reissue of the highly coveted DOD Meatbox Subharmonic Synthesizer/octave pedal. The original issue of this effect has had mostly downs but that was then and this is now. Today, all musicians know the value of bass and there is no better way to slam the PA system at a festival then plugging in a sub harmonic synthesizer pedal!
Note: It is actually a Mitsubishi chip, we mistakenly say Samsung chip. Digitech managed to uncover 3000 of the Mitsubishi chips that make up the heart of the original pedal. There was a bit of a back and forth about what type of chip it was. Tom from DOD had said that it was a Samsung chip, but the guys at Mantic Conceptual stated that it was actually a Mitsubishi chip. I relayed that back to the guys at DOD and they managed to open up a reissue Meatbox and it was indeed a Mitsubishi chip that appears in the original release. We mistakenly say it’s a Samsung chip in the video but it is indeed a Mitsubishi chip!
This video was shot by Lukas Hodge and edited by Scott Ward for Vato Negro Productions.

No clue why people are mad about the talking. If you're a gigging musician looking to buy new gear, you're pretty much getting a free instructional/ trick tip video with these....its fucking helpful and rad
Actual sound samples:
Original Meatbox, fretted 1:26
Re-issue, fretted 1:46
Re-issue, fretless 8:56
Original, fretless 9:11 (was an inside job)
Looper A/B 9:36
Greg E good work bro
Two days in. I love this thing. Helps if your distortion has a clean blend. Dial back the dirt throw a phaser on there and focus on the middle two strings. I've had to adjust my playing to suit it's abilities but I've discovered some encouraging sounds.
Makes me wanna chain it up right after an envelope filter, play it on fretless and get those massive early 2000's Skull Disco style dubstep sub bass swells spanning two octaves :P
digitech needs to reissue the space station & the buzzbox
Iblame Summers I think the Space Station 2 is a thing.
TheBellyheart fo' real !!!! ????
+TheBellyheart sure hope so, i'd love a buzzbox reissue too with better tracking on the square wave suboctave
+Iblame Summers Space Station ! I'd waste money on that re-issue.
Jeez, why am I still on this wack-ass page?
I was looking for meatbox clones 5 months ago but wasn't satisfied what was out there. You have no idea how excited I am about this reissue! Now the next reissue I hope oneday is made is the Ehx/Sovtek Green Bubble Font Big Muff. But in the meantime Thank You DoD!
switch them both on maybe? :D
do the meatboxs u can buy new today use a different chip set than the reissue from 2015?
Stoked for this vid and more to come on the meat box! I've been using my FX 32 for 20 yrs.
they make a 500 series version of the boombox now called the DBX 510
I got my reissue as they were clearing out the last of the dod stock before digitech was sold to Cort. Got it for 74.99
so mjch history here appreciate it juan and jonathan
It might of been Digital, but Digitech should reissue the Synth Wah and Synth Bass Wah, the two only really good pedals in the X-series of the early 2000s
Love my bass synth wah
I really enjoyed that.
I miss the old DOD pedals
Is this guy from dot hacker?
+Miceal wilson Yep!
I just got the original a few days ago and I think I need the reissue too, and since I'm bi-amping, one chain being modulation with the bass dimed and the other overdrive/fuzz/distortion with a lot of mid, may put there cause it still pushes out a lot of punch at 35-40hz, definitely can make some solid bottom rumbles when needed, especially with the DOD juice box as well where it fizzles out around 50ish hz
I pre-ordered this purely based on this video! I can't wait!
A Joe Barresi interview? Hell yeah!
I've recently started using Density Hulk and my bands don't know what they're hearing/feeling. Tracking lacks and in my rig can't be cranked all the way. I'm so excited to try this & I owe you a big thanks for the heads up.
update: I retired Density Hulk and incorporated the meatbox. it feels so good!
maybe its just my computer, but I can hear when you're talking, but when you're playing I hear nothing....ahhh nevermind it just doesn't really go over well with my headphones... so low
What's the difference between subharmonic and a sub octaver?
Please do a demo running the Meatbox with a gnarly fuzz!!!
The old one sounds more synth like, mine is collecting dust cuz i'm afraid I'll blow the speakers on my amp.
I remember the meat box came out around the same time as the punkifier by DoD and they were in a whole line of different sounds from what I remember. There was a grunge pedal also and metal pedal, flange and more if anybody knows anything about where I could find out about the whole line of them let me know
Hank Cuntpunt buzzbox
how much of a concern is blowing out speakers with this, really? i use a carvin bx500 and brx 2x10 cab, and i'm only playing loud enough to cut through jazz and r&b stuff. not nearly as loud as the mars volta is gonna play, especially in a huge venue, but still, if he's blown out speakers in (i'm assuming) 8x10s with this, and i'm only using a 2x10, that worries me
I got one because of this demo
When r these on sale?
videos15536 You can preorder them at Sweetwater for $149.99
Sick pedal! The hunt is on....;)
How does this sound on 6 string guitar?
T- Hawk Pretty shite... most guitar amps don't hold up well with serious low end, and chords would turn to absolute mush.
T- Hawk fuckin wicked mate
oh snap. only 3000? better get on this.
sweet thats the bass player for mars volta
+Andres Natalino This kind of is his UA-cam channel, so yeah. He's rad as fuck, regardless.
Just pre-ordered mine
I can barely hear anything on my laptop speakers. :P Definitely gonna get one of these while they last.
i just love juan a lot
Hella 808 competitor
Would this go at the very end of the chain?
milieugraye Depends on what is in the chain. For the gonk reissue I would recommend it being at the end.
milieugraye end of, definitely.... itsvdestroys anything else in its path
Would a compressor help to not blow your speakers up and even out the notes and dynamics of the pedal? and if so, would you put it in front of the meatbox or after?
and would headroom of your amp make a big difference? for example i have a 4x10 ampeg cabinet with a 70's fender bassman 100 on top of it and the speakers are holding on so far so good but distort sometimes, but do the speakers have an easier time if the amp has more watts/headroom like an Ampeg svt?
biamping and getting a dedicated subwoofer for the very low notes is the only solution to not blowing your speakers while still having audible subharmonics.
Great point already made about bi-amping. Also, You could use a HPF (high pass filter) and set it to prevent some of the lowest frequencies from traveling to the speaker.
compressor in front, limiter in the back. party on 👍
Sweetwater is taking preorders at $150.
louderthangod Just placed an order!!
I tried em both; original is still better...
In what way?...
and if you looked inside, was it surface mount components on the re-issue?
Juan said they sound the same, & he’s got a good ear m’man... just sayin...
Less talk, more meat box!
What about quid pro quo?
Or the Mueller report?
This video is 11:34 and features about 30-40 secs of actual playing. Please do better.
Received mine yesterday. Been messing with it for 24 hours now. It.... doesn't work very well. Can't track accurately below an A sharp and it doesn't stack well with any of my dirt boxes. Think hard before you let the hype influence your wallet, this pedal is a hard lady to wrangle. It's not friendly and definitely not for everyone. Gonna continue working with it because I really want to get along with this pedal.
Discovering it gets along better with passive pickups. But if you had any hopes of blasting people with a fat open A string, you're gonna be greatly disappointed at the flub of glitching that farts out.
I just got a reissue. I have a Jazz Bass with passive pickups. It tracks the low E just fine. Tracks amazing on the D and G string for funky noodling.
The re-issue sounds MEATIER .. ha! but seriously
huh
NOT true bypass!
Just play the damn pedal
