If I was doing one offs this would be the way to go I suppose. However what would be awesome is a 3d scanner tied into a CNC machine to carve out stocks one after the other.

If you give the left right axis a lead screw you can have a motor spin the work and it would cut for you like a lathe

nice machine. you could start with a similar diametre End Mill (Not Ball) so you can remove more material with less passes. To avoid overcutting you just use a ie. 1mm bigger diametre/longer guide so leave some stock, on the stock. then you finish with the round bit.
