My guest today is the journalist Nellie Bowles - columnist at the Free Press, and author of the new book 'Morning After the Revolution: Dispatches from the Wrong Side of History.'
We spoke about Nellie's journey from being an orthodox liberal journalist at The New York Times in 2020, to becoming an apostate who lost her faith in progressive politics after reporting on the harm done by its extremists. We spoke about homelessness, drug decriminalization, the defund the police movement, and - in the extended section - transgenderism.

There is politically useful history that is emphasized eg historical slavery in the US and politically unhelpful history that is ignored eg slavery in Africa today and everywhere else for all of recorded time.

@@jonahtwhale1779For example only yesterday someone asserted a great deal online as historical fact in regards to slavery. It may have been factual for the US but it was completely incorrect for my country or for Europe. In fact a white person in Europe was more likely to be taken as a slave than to encounter a slave. For example as later as the 1850s British women were being sold in Algiers. And during the Mediaeval period this was more intense. Islam controlled much of France, Italy and Spain and demanded many thousands of slaves a year. This continued until 1492, about the time the Turks completed the Greek genocide of Constantinople

Agreed, nothing beautiful about it. If the streets are left and people to their own devices, what happens is that the predators come and fill that gap. From those people in the zombie areas nothing is to be expected, but if neighborhoods and businesses are under no police protection, they become the wild west again. I am from Germany, and it's hard to imagine those things happening on the west coast of the US. I've been there quite often. I also hear, that it's alright to give people suicide medicine (when they are severely sick) and that funerals aren't that important.

The real difference between the progressive and conservative mindset is touched on but not really explored.
Progressives think let's change something. We can have all these new good things. Only later do they discover the bad outcomes and the good things they have lost.

To express this as concisely as I can, it is not a “beautiful idea” to believe that our society, itself, is a bad thing to the degree that abolishing the police is a good idea because the only reason that people would act criminally is that they are driven to do so by our rotten society. Talking about the zombie apocalypse that is now LA and San Francisco, it wasn't always like that. From 1959-67 California was governed by Gerry Brown Sr. From 1967-75 it was governed by Ronald Reagan. In those years, California was often described as something of a paradise. Outstanding schools, modern high quality infrastructure, it was clean and safe, had thriving farms and industries, the cities had thriving night-life, and of course great weather and scenery.
Once Gerry Brown the lesser (Governor Moonbeam, as he was called) got elected governor after Reagan, the slide off the cliff began. It started with his declaring the California Water Project was going to be stopped part way through completion, because who needs sufficient water? As a series of farther and farther Left governors and state legislators were elected, the collapse of once amazing California accelerated. Taxes and regulations on businesses and residents skyrocketed, and businesses left the state for more moderate and friendlier climates. The border was opened to illegal immigrants and wages were pushed down as a result, street crime and violent crime rose, and the tax burden on the residents and businesses increased again to deal with the costs. It was - and still is - a self reinforcing collapse of society. Interestingly, as more people quit their jobs and sold their homes and left the state, it tended to concentrate the political spectrum to more and more hard core Leftists.
Having watched this scenario play out now in California and New York and Oregon and Washington over many years, as well as seen what's happened to the universities and the MSM, I've identified a pattern. Every institution or polity the Left takes over, they utterly destroy. It becomes a hollowed-out husk of its former self, and becomes utterly corrupt, psychotic and destructive to itself and everything around it. The Western Left has devolved into an insane cult.

Ah yes, California under Ronald Reagan... the paradise where he sent the national guard to Berkley because students turned an abandoned parking lot into a garden to peacefully protest the vietnam war. Can't have that. The police wound up killing students. Where Reagan was quoted as saying "if there's got to be bloodshed let's get it over with". You talk about California's great schools - you know the schools where Reagan gutted funding and cancelled the free college system. We want sympathy and empathy, but if we use them as a cheap way for self validation, and actively looking for something and anything to be sympathetic about, these two virtues will become toxic and will lead us to a failed community, and a dystopia society.
Community and society, for their survival, often disadvantage behaviors which are destructive, such as robbery, and reward behaviors which are constructive, such as hard working. If our only self validation is who has the biggest heart, we will soon find out there is just nothing to be sympathetic about a hard working person, but plenty to be sympathetic about a robber if we are actively looking into him really deep for anything.

29:50 Ok look, normie ppl...the idea is that the MARKET is supposed to CORRECT these things, unfettered. (Now I gotta draw attention to my @handle, I'll change it next week).
It's rly only slightly farther than functional "liberal" society, and actually how it's SUPPOSED to operate, under optimal conditions.
I appreciate Louise, and almost all her arguments, when it comes to socionormative culture.
On GOVERNANCE however, it's a different story. Precedence for the TEMPORARY declaration of martial law, is built into our system (in the US, and differs elsewhere to the extent that all places aren't now basically the US).
But, if you accidentally imported a large hostile population, so need to indefinitely impose martial law, to keep your smallish island under control? (UK).
I can see how this might compel you to essentially promote soft authoritarianism LP, but ultimately, it's a situation that just doesn't work.
The most functional systems of governance need to be replicated, as nearly as possible, as consistently as possible, in as many places as possible. Otherwise, military juntas around the world, could essentially be deemed 'justifiable'.
Edit: Michael Shellenberger's corrective suggestions, in this case example, are spot on, and the most minimal government involvement reasonably possible in implementing his proposed social changes, could be considered ideal (that's obviously not always practically possible, this could be considered one such case. But you'd be surprised how much the citizenry can handle on their own when sufficiently informed and engaged).

The best thing about Christianity is that it led to the enlightenment, which was a rejection of the primacy of religious doctrine and enabled people to think for themselves. So the best thing about Christianity was nothing to do with any of the religion's teachings, it was the event that enabled us to reject religion itself.

These things are not linear, they can move dramatically very quickly. Everything can appear stable until all of a sudden it isn't.
Look at the fall of the Warsaw pact. 40 years of stability fell apart in a week.
The GFC - decades of rising house prives, reversed in a month.
So many examples of today's mainstream being washed away after having their foundations undermined.
The progressive project has deliberately undermined the pillars of our society for decades - family, religion, money, the economy, relationships, law and order, personal responsibility, uncontrolled immigration, patriotism, education, the media etc etc.

@@glimmrgirl she wants to stay relevant. These people knew exactly what they were doing and they would be doing the same thing now if the politics hadn't changed so abruptly.
The political landscape is changing and little rats like this are the first to smell it. It's not a 'conscience' thing it's pure (and painfully obvious) self preservation. I can live with the deluded, I can't live with liars.
This woman is a walking lie. There will be many more, watch out for them.
Stay safe, have a nice day.
