I know this is the "easy" lesson, so you're employing the basic E chord. But if you want to attain that patented, distinctive Sundown sound that Gordon Lightfoot gets in the original recording it's an E5 which is with the pinky finger on the G string of the 4th fret below the nut or capo. I admit it's not a beginner chord! Do it the easy way at first and then try adding it later once you get some finger strength with practice. I hope I'm not out of line.....
As a matter of fact yes, he uses his Gibson Sunburst 12 string. I have the old school sheet music for the Sundown album plus I've played it and there's no denying the distinction when you strike the E5 chord even in 6 string.. Anytime I've seen him play it he's using the 12 string. He uses the acoustic 12 string quite a bit. I love it!
Playing guitar is not as hard as it looks. When I first started playing, I was so afraid I was doing it wrong. Finally I realized. It's not that difficult. It's a beat. It is only a drum with strings. As long as you are in the right timing of the song. You can play it.

Yes if you want to play at the same pitch as the original (e.g. to play with the original recording). Or without the capo if you'd prefer to sing it one tone lower.

Yes if you want to play at the same pitch as the original (e.g. to play with the original recording). Or without the capo if you'd prefer to sing it one tone lower.
