I luck out! I plant indoors my Greens, all winter. 2 kinds of Romaine (Red and Green leaf), a spinach, and an arugula. I plant them about every 3 weeks for lettuce and 4 for the others.
Just planted my last indoor batch tonight. I'll sow outside in 3 and 4 weeks! Assuming we do not get a late blizzard.

Hi Greg, are you using the GreenStalk to garden all winter? If so I would love to know your setup. I am trying it for the first time in my basement but I think the soils might to cold down there. Everything is very slow to come and seem to be struggling.

I have a greenhouse but can't imagine lugging this in. Mine are sooo heavy, moving them can be back breaking. And you will have to move them again when it gets too warm in there. I moved them into the basement early March hoping to start things early, and practice using it year round BUT having to take apart and move too often is tough

Thank you Jill, showing planting in the Greenstalk’s. I bought 2 last spring after watching one of your videos. Did radishes, green peas and bush beans in them. Later tried out couple tomatoes and peppers, did ok, problems I had were from my own mistakes.
I have green peas, radish, lettuce, carrots growing now. Have more to plant this year, had bought couple more late last fall. Green stalks are really easy to plant and harvest. Really enjoy your hands on , how to videos, best garden videos on youtube.

This is the most informative video of potential for the GreenStalk I've seen in regard to planning and usage of planting. I'm entering my third year using GreenStalk and just made my fourth purchase to expand the tower garden. I also utilize a variety of container gardening methods through EarthBox, fabric pots w/drip fed olla, and kratky hydrophonics. Each process has its benefits and limitations. But the GreenStalk is my favorite thus far!

Thanks I am in zone 6a and a month ago started seeds in my Greenstalk with lettuce, spinach, peas and kale in my basement with grow lights on one side and the top. I rotate it a few times a day like I would outside to share the light with all plants but everything is very slow to grow and I am thinking it is soil temp maybe? The temp down there is around 55 and 60. I have it on a cement floor. I water each planter cup separately until plants get larger and using a weak fish emulsion fertilizer. I had hoped I could use the Greenstalk all winter in the right conditions but still experimenting with just what those conditions are. Maybe my basement is too cold. I do have a cattle panel greenhouse but the temps would be too cold at night I think, still at 32 some nights.

I know arugula, but I have only recently developed an appreciation of its flavor. I just ordered one of these planters - thanks for the discount! - and I can't wait to give this idea a go. Any suggestions on where to place this when it can go in the sun?

Congratulations on your new Greenstalk! If I understand your question correctly, you will want to put it in full sun especially early in the season. During the height of summer, I wheel it under shade during the hot part of the day.

The Greenstalk is definitely the lowest time-intensive gardening method I’ve ever used. The succession idea is just an option and yes the planning takes some time. But many people just plant at once and still enjoy a great harvest.

Are these intended for outdoors? My concern is that they are tall and not very wide so I'm wondering if you have to somehow fasten them down to avoid having them blow over in the wind? I have 5 gallon buckets that I place on about a 2' high platform to keep them from the rabbits, and they blow off if not fastened to each other and staked at the ends into the ground (Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but maybe bigger problem is that we're about 3 blocks in from Lake Michigan). I love the idea and design of these but just not sure if practical for me. Thanks if anyone can help with an answer! 🌻

Hi Barb, I have 2 of these, only 3 tiers high. Last year, my first year with them the wind did not bother the planter at all. Very heavy when filled with soil. I don't believe if you have 4 or 5 tiers the wind would be a problem either. They are very sturdy. Of course the plants can still suffer from the wind and why I do roll the GreenStalk closer to the house for some protection when winds are bad. This year I am going to put them out on a lower cement patio that only gets afternoon sun hoping to keep leafy greens around longer as the weather heats up. I am in Southern NH on a lake so my winds can be treacherous.

Anyone know if the Dollar Tree stackable planters are food grade? The bottom only says "R2". There is no recycling triangle symbol.
Do the GreenStalk planters have a plastic number on the bottom?

    • @thebeginnersgarden

I’m not sure about the number on the bottom but they are made of bpa free, pvc free, and another that I can’t remember, plastic. You can probably find that info on their website. They are made in the USA and a family owned company.
